@@DIYJIM With regards to torque spec for the gear case oil fill plug, for Models 921050/1/3/7, figure 167 on page 67 of the Service Manual indicates it to be between 11.3 and 14.7 N.m
I have a crushed rock driveway, and, my 28inch delux skids, are too small, and, the ends are too blunt. I had a metal working buddy adapt them. we added skid plates that were about two inches wide, and, curved up like snow skis. They work much better, the old skids would always dig in. Just for your information, the "grease things" are called "zerks". You should not have to change that gear oil very ofter, depending on use, it should last for years, just check it to make sure it is the proper level.

I’m sure you hear that a lot, but know it really does mean a lot to many of us that you put yourself in harms way to dedicate a good portion of your life serving this great country. Great video, and well done........1st time viewer....very familiar servicing Ariens, and I always owned the top 2 or 3 models with 28' to 30' buckets.>>>Something that I always do yearly; I remove both rear wheels off the shafts or spindles, and I use a lubricant such as WD-40 with a fine emery cloth sandpaper and wet-sand the entire spindles until all rust is removed, then I apply a small film of automotive grease on the spindle(s), then I clean the wheel with Spray-9 to get rid of the old grease residue and dirt, then slide the wheels back on the spindle(s) with the clip or cotter-pin to secure the wheels . >>Secondly, I also remove the deflecting chute, clean the bottom end of the chute with a cloth or spray-9, wipe all contacts area clean, apply a little heavier coat of grease on the bottom end of chute, re-assemble., rotate the chute several times, and doing so will prevent any ice forming and freezing, thus allowing your chute to rotate effortly throughout the winter season.>>>You have covered everything else very nicely........Bravo!

Small engine mechanic here. Great video! The threaded drain plug on the gearbox, as far as I know, does not have a torque setting but get it tight, not enough to strip it. The service manual states you should be using Loctite 555 on that gearbox drain plug since it's a high vibration area, that's the only advice I can give. Keep up the good work!
This was the perfect video I needed to check out the exact same machine I'm servicing. Found out this united needed new belts, a new friction disc and plate. Other then that's this thing is going to be ready for '22-'23 winter! Thanks again!
Thank you! Mine is almost identical to yours. My plug for the auger is on the side, so that’s the only difference I see. Never gave a thought too opening the bottom to lube the inside. Definitely going to do that today. I found HEET (the red bottle) helps a lot when the fuel gets moisture in it.
Good work, one thing we always do here is while the machine is in the maintenance position is take the wheels off, clean the shafts and re grease them, you would be surprised how many seized wheels we fix. having said that, very good.
Good video sir! Well planned and demonstrated. If I may suggest one thing. As far as adjusting the skids, I use a paint stick cut in half, spread them towards the skids. Perfect setting every time. GO ARMY!
Thanks for this video. Very informative. My machine is from 1986, and still running strong. Not sure what the previous owner did, but I'll be keeping up with maintenance to enjoy the machine many more years.
I pickup used blowers and rebuild them, and I noticed one of the most neglected places on the machines is the gas. Treating it with Seafoam BEFORE you put it away for the summer is how it works the best. It is a fuel stabilizer and keeps the fuel fresh so the engine starts up easy at the beginning of the next snow season. And it is a cleaners if you get dirt or varnish in your carburetor or fuel system. If you let you machine set all summer with old gas in it, the Seafoam may not clean it all out and you will need to take the carb apart and completely clean it (or replace it for the ones who aren't machanically inclined)
I've got the 824 model and this video is super good with everything you need to keep these beasts purring during the noreasters we have in MA . Really like the gear oil information. I never changed mine since 1995 LOL. I have done the rest but your video is valuable. I just saw someone giving away for parts an 824 model on Craigslist, and the reason is that the picture shows the gearbox cracked. I best get my butt taking care of mine. This is wild, I have the exact same snow blower Ariens ST724. Got it used off Craigslist from someone that took care of it pretty good. I've maintained the engine more so than other mechanics and gears so this is an outstanding video, thank you very much! I'll get this baby tuned up nice for winter. My wheel is wobbling bad so I'm going to have to check out what's going on there.

I read your message I went to grease my axles couldn't take out one of the wheels luckily machine isn't that old so I managed it. Anti seize applied all good forever now

The are all snow throwers. The machines, regardless of size, have the same action. They hit the snow to make it fly. There is no use of air in the process. The snow is thrown, not blown. The confusion started with lay people mixing tool names like snow throwers and leaf blowers. The mislabeling stuck. There are no leaf throwers or snow blowers. As time goes by, equipment sellers have picked up on this error. Some, incorrectly, use snow blower as a distinction from snow thrower. However, it is a distinction without a difference. I wince when I hear a professional, who should know better, refer to a snow blower. Sometimes I ask them where the air comes out. The look on their face is priceless.

@1:23 those grease "things" are called zerk fittings or zerk nipples. Clean them up before attaching a grease gun so you're not forcing crud into the shaft sleeve. You want to apply enough grease that it starts to ooze out at the bearings.

Great video! 12 years old and still looks great! Using nickles to set skid shoe height is only good for people that have a super flat driveway. 3/16" is the lowest I would suggest otherwise. People with gravel driveways, very minimum 1/2" you don't want that going through your machine.

One thing that needs to be done is to pull both of the wheels off the drive shaft, and put a coating of grease on the drive shaft. This will help prevent the wheels from rusting onto the shaft.
I run the carb dry after every use by closing the valve under the gas tank. I drain the tank into the lawn mower at the end of season. I also use ethanol FREE gas. What about the air filter?
Ethanol free is a very good option, But sometimes it’s hard to find somewhere to buy, I have a friend that goes to are local airport and buys fuel there
I just had to look in the manual for my level. Model 921028 the deluxe 24 platinum. U have to fashion your own dipstick, then you should have the top oil level about 2.5 inches from the top of the casing
Great video. I have a new 30" Deluxe EFI. The third use was a heavy deep snow. 3/4 way done I noticed some oil drops as I was moving. I checked the oil and was a quart down. Did you ever have that happen?

Help!!! On my snowblower friction wheel shaft, if the smallest gear is in place, the wheels won't turn. If I move it aside, then the wheels turn. Put back in place, it won't move again. All gears are complete with no teeth broken. I have wracked my brain and it doesn't make sense to me. What am I doing wrong? Every gear moves until that smallest gear is put back in place. Please advise..
@@DIYJIM All the sprockets move freely, but when the little one is put back in place, none will move. It is like the wheels are seized, yet they aren't when the little sprocket is moved away from the rest.
What would be really helpful is if you would say which size wrench you're using. Take the first thing you do with checking your auger spindle. The wrench you use behind and the one used in front are different, correct? I've found the same issue with many other vids I've seen here, for example, the Ariens oil change vids. One guy says use a half-inch, but it's actually a 16mm. This kind of thing drives me crazy.

Yeah, but what if you can't get the dang wheels off? I have an Ariens Compact that's 5 years old and still looks like new. I took the codder pins out, but even with a crow bar could not move the wheels more than 1-2" down the shaft.
Those chains were on my snow blower when I bought it. Maybe a small shop near you that sells snow blowers. Sorry I could not help much. Thanks for watching
You should have drained the engine oil. They are not meant to be at that angle . The cylinder will fill up with oil and you could break the pull cord or starter.

Another good practice tip is to take those wheels off and put anti seize on the axle shafts. Good video .

I would check and protect from rust on all cable springs and put anticorrosion oil on cables and body frame...

I run the carb dry after every use by closing the valve under the gas tank. I drain the tank into the lawn mower at the end of season. I also use ethanol FREE gas. What about the air filter?
my snow blower does not have a air filter but if your snow blower does might not hut to check
Ethanol free is a very good option, But sometimes it’s hard to find somewhere to buy, I have a friend that goes to are local airport and buys fuel there
You aren’t running the carb dry you are just stopping the flow of fuel to it.

After the flow of gas is off the motor continues to run until the gas in the carb is gone. Aka: Dry
@@Robyrob7771 nope, when you close the valve you shut off the flow. Either gas or air has to enter the hose in order for the the carb to empty.

If you have the same snow thrower when it is sitting level the oil will help slowly drip out the fill drain hole

I just had to look in the manual for my level. Model 921028 the deluxe 24 platinum. U have to fashion your own dipstick, then you should have the top oil level about 2.5 inches from the top of the casing

Great video. I have a new 30" Deluxe EFI. The third use was a heavy deep snow. 3/4 way done I noticed some oil drops as I was moving. I checked the oil and was a quart down. Did you ever have that happen?

Help!!! On my snowblower friction wheel shaft, if the smallest gear is in place, the wheels won't turn. If I move it aside, then the wheels turn. Put back in place, it won't move again. All gears are complete with no teeth broken. I have wracked my brain and it doesn't make sense to me. What am I doing wrong? Every gear moves until that smallest gear is put back in place. Please advise..
Not sure can you put the gear in place and move by hand? sorry never had this problem
@@DIYJIM All the sprockets move freely, but when the little one is put back in place, none will move. It is like the wheels are seized, yet they aren't when the little sprocket is moved away from the rest.

What would be really helpful is if you would say which size wrench you're using. Take the first thing you do with checking your auger spindle. The wrench you use behind and the one used in front are different, correct? I've found the same issue with many other vids I've seen here, for example, the Ariens oil change vids. One guy says use a half-inch, but it's actually a 16mm. This kind of thing drives me crazy.

Yeah, but what if you can't get the dang wheels off? I have an Ariens Compact that's 5 years old and still looks like new. I took the codder pins out, but even with a crow bar could not move the wheels more than 1-2" down the shaft.
think you could put it on its side and spray some penetrating oil on the shaft? Something like this stuff works great amzn.to/2MJOQlz

You should have drained the engine oil. They are not meant to be at that angle . The cylinder will fill up with oil and you could break the pull cord or starter.
