Ditto is about a parasocial relationship fans have with their idols. It’s an escape for her. At the end she moves on and goes with the guy, and the girls become a fond memory. Then later she puts the tape in and the girls appear again. In a way it’s about how the group will always be there to comfort her

Actually I read a theory that I like just a little bit more, but it still includes that concept. The girl from ditto is the one having delusions. She has personified things in her life. The stray cat, her passed away friend, new jeans, her phone, and her doctor. She’s lost touch of reality hence the empty videos.
Ditto is obviously about the unhealthy side of the parasocial relationships fans have with idols and how they let all the endless content consume them to the point of no return. And OMG I believe is all about the idol's perspective of said relationship and how they feel the need to fit the ideas everyone has of them to the point where they lose their true identity, like Hyein being the 'main character' or Haerin being a cat because she 'acts like a cat' (she's eating cat food in the MV btw). Danielle seems to be the only one who remembers who they actually are (an idol group) but even she has moments where she loses herself as well, and she doesn't even say that they're actual human beings because at this point their only identity IS NewJeans. There's an interesting theory called the "Siri Theory" and I can't remember the name of the channel who created it but it basically states that celebrities (more specifically idols) are the Siri of our world, as in they're so far gone in their careers that they believe they really are whatever the fans expect them to be, whether it be a cat, or a princess, or a doctor (AKA the one in the group that's always seen helping other members when they're down, Minji in the MV). Sort of how we expect Siri to know all the answers to all our questions and she's nothing more than that. I didn't do a good job explaining the whole theory LMAO but there's a vid out there that's better at explaining it if you just search up "NewJeans OMG Siri theory"

The woman on camera represents the fan, and her name in the music video is Ban Hee-soo. The fans of New Jeans are called Bunnies, and the pronunciation of Ban Hee-soo and Bunnies is similar. As a symbol that her fans encounter idols through a monitor like RUclips or broadcasting, Ban Hee-soo always encounters New Jeans through a camera.
As such, she was virtually always alone. Others look at her strangely for falling for her idol. Her injured arm symbolizes her pain
Idol comforts her pain. Also, the rainy scene is the idol's pain, and she shares the idol's pain in the rain together.
One day, she falls in love with a man and is torn between him and New Jeans. Eventually, she gave up on being a passionate fan of New Jeans and met a man. In the distant future, she relives her memories by replaying a video of her from her student days. She has long since left New Jeans, but New Jeans comes into her room as if it had never happened, and her feelings as a New Jeans fan from her school days are revived.
Many say that this interpretation is the most powerful.
What's interesting is that while some disturbing scenes were being produced, there were many interpretations that Hee-su Ban's injured arm was caused by an accident, and that all New Jeans died in the accident and only Hee-su Ban survived.
The agency has not made any official mention, but I think it may have been set up so that there is room for interpretation.
Both ditto and omg are about being an idol. Ditto is a out the parasocial relationship fans have with idols and OMG is the idols pov where they don't know their real selves from the roles given to them by fans. Like being the caretaker or the princess of the group or even being a friend to their fans like in ditto. Ditto also takes place in 1998 I think and OMG is modern day. The character Ban. Heesoo also has a channel where they upload old VHS like videos of them in school

I also see the depression connection cause like someone else pointed out it's about parasocial relationship with idols (or any form of media really) and how if you get too "stuck" on it, you can forget to live your own life too. It's best to enjoy and keep those things as memories than things you should live by, cause that can make you really miserable in the long run.
I feel like because of the pandemic a lot of people are getting addicted to things on the internet and like Hanni says she's an iphone on OMG, because we see most of k-pop things trough our phones. We have to know how to separate reality from what we see online or on media. The girl has the memories from when she was younger and she liked this group from school (NewJeans) but it's just a memory, you have to live your life at some point lol.
I also think it's very interesting in OMG how each one of them has a role (princess, kitty, doctor) much like idols do. Some idols even shared that companies ask them to act a certain way to attract more people, like act cute or act mysterious when that wasn't even their personality. I wonder how crazy that must be for the artist themselves because it must be exhausting to act like someone you're not.
I thought it was very clever because fandoms are OBSSESSED with labels, like x person is the mom of the group, x person is so cute like a bunny/cat/puppy, and so on. And that is cute but annoying when done too much because no one is just one thing, Jin from BTS even talked about this once how he doesn't like to be called mom of the group as if his only role was to take care of the other members since he is the oldest. I feel like some fans (in any fandom) take things too far and it's tiring even for the artists themselves.

sonically, issa vibe! but it is also plausible to suggest that this masterpiece right here displays how things can really be *internalized* & how most people are *desensitized* to it. i’d like to quote two of the comments i’ve read & also add my own commentary to it:
• ““i’ll run whenever you call me~ i exist for you,” hanni’s line may be expressing siri, but it’s a very important line to express idols. she is expressed as a *patient* who sings for us, _tries_ for us, and then _eventually_ *loses* herself & thinks that she is an iphone (siri) who has to do _anything_ she’s being told to. an "iphone", basically a metaphor for being a person who has to run & be ‘on’ when the button (app) is pushed.
• danielle, who is known to fans for always sticking with her bubbly personality, is laughing [even] while [just] watching tv with _nothing_ on it (she’s so used to her _professionalism_ that it’s almost as if she is still performing & the public eye is there to watch her expressions closely even when no one is there to criticize her. an extremely uncomfortable and unrealistic dilemma to be put in, right?)
• hyein has a princess syndrome, because while always trying to dress up & be her prettiest self for the fans, she forgets reality and confuses herself with fairytales. (snow white, sleeping beauty, and the revenant references) - this also reminds me of (g)-idle’s ‘nxde’ especially the line “put on my beautiful self” as idols when what they actually want is to bare their souls, show their authentic self more even when they get hated for it)
• haerin - ever since debut, both fans and non-fans have said haerin looks like a cat _so much_ that she actually starts to believe she’s a cat
• minji is the unofficial leader of the group (there are no positions in nwjns, but a lot of people, and myself included, think she has leadership qualities) and she’s the oldest. so she’s been known to take care of her members very well. hence, her thinking she is a doctor who’s under pressure to take care of her members.” we can also see that in 2:17, she finally decided to check up on her own self too. she needs someone to attend to her needs as well since she is also still young.
when people are constantly telling idols what they should do & how to behave or have such audacity to dictate their lives, it will eventually get _into_ them. there is a chance that they may actually, subconsciously, start _believing them._ (this also reminds me of _the rise of bangtan ep 4_ or also known as the times where namjoon expressed his crisis of how he wrestled with his own thoughts that deals with the society’s opinion about him & idols in general, and how he also came up with the resolution of why would he even tried so hard to categorize & box his identity if he is an idol or an artist, when he can just be _himself_ without confinements). because by projecting things towards these artists & feel the need to tweak almost everything about them can be equal to insisting that they should replace their real selves in order to please us just because we are the source of their income and we are the ones making them relevant; which *ironically* made us become deeply into them and stan them in the first place because there are parts of them that are authentic... that are ‘very human’ which are relatable. and when hanni said, *_“now i am ashamed that i was worried. it doesn’t matter who i am anymore. i exist for you.”_* it’s just heartbreaking. because there are k-pop idols who feel sorry and people even guilt trip them when they are expressing their honest feelings. it’s sad that when they finally choose to share their genuine concerns, the public tends to deem them as ungrateful for all the platform, fame/success, support, and all those other things they have - _as if all these things would immune them from feeling empty or restless_ from doing what they used to be passionate about for a long time. when they are being invalidated, eventually, they may perceive that voicing out their thoughts and emotions are pointless since they are always available for fans, but they rarely get to have someone who will listen to them & hold space for them. (it honestly kinda reminds me of the same dilemma in singularity by taehyung. the lyrics *_“i don’t have a voice,”_* *_“i dumped myself into the lake, i buried my voice for you”_* & *_“have i lost myself or have i gained you”_* this is important because as a singer, his voice is what defines him. a symbol of his identity, if you will. it could be interpreted as them sacrificing their real voice and identity in order to please us. or the later half of bts festa 2022 where they’ve expressed their dilemmas when they are experiencing burn out. taehyung even said, “i’ve wanted to show the things that are inside me for a long time now. *_at some point, having these thoughts started to feel wrong. i became cautious in even mentioning the things i’ve wanted to try._* and it was hard to even say that i’m going to try it.” or when hobi said, _“so i hope you don’t see this as a negative thing.”,_ _“i hope you’ll understand.”)_
stans (and even the industry itself) have the tendency to feel entitled & therefore, demand such unnecessary things from them. things which *don’t* really lessen their musicality/artistry, other skills, and *worth.* they are being subjected to be stripped off their basic rights just for the entertainment & the audience’s attachment to them which we already know are harmful _(e.g., fans are very much enticed to fall in love with them but idols themselves are not allowed to fall in love or being frowned upon & lose support if ever they are involved in dating scandals or they themselves openly admit that someone else’s already own their heart & thus, they’re not available anymore which will crash the fantasies of delusional individuals out there and companies who profit from them being marketed as fans’ potential romantic partners/close friends/family i.e. parasocial relationships)._ but sometimes, things still need to be put into perspective. this visual presentation & social commentary is truly top tier that we all should learn from & be _more_ mindful of. otherwise, we would all collectively loose our minds without even knowing it. and just go back from “it is what it is” since such unhealthy perception & treatment has always been the norms - especially in the industry that people mostly often apply the “they’re just doing their job” notion & forgot that they are also human beings like us.
“i think the team at ador & hybe are VERY self aware of media and newjeans’ market. they know what people say about newjeans!! this is their first comeback and only 5 months since their debut & they’re already _challenging_ the industry and doing callbacks to their debut! a MASTERPIECE of a music video & the song is 10/10! i love the breaking of the 4th wall, i love how they called out their haters at the end of the video, i love hanni dressed as steve jobs. i mean, this video has it all: humor, weird/quirkyness, references, callbacks, serious topic(s), lore, introspection, thought-provoking...”
the only one i’ve experienced who goes with _this kind_ of depth, substance, socio-psychological commentaries and other related issues & therefore has that replay value _ever since_ day 1/debut, is bts. so experiencing the craft of newjeans: the concepts & rich message they’re going for so far is both nostalgic and refreshing in today’s era saturated of only aesthetically-focused content without that much of a substance. and the fact that they are doing both is chef’s kiss.
sorry if this is very lengthy. i just can’t express enough how this is just so promising at all levels.
p.s. all the references i’ve mentioned that i personally find relatable to one another are just based on my background as a psych major, as a former exclusive old school hip hop head (who used to decipher conscious music & its lyricism), my prior exposure to k-pop culture, those similar patterns i’ve observed in how the industry works, and even just from individuals i’ve encountered/get to experience daily (how they turn their thoughts & emotions into art). thanks for checking out nj!

there is a theory ditto is about survivors guilt as well which also kind of makes sense because it can be viewed as heeso coping with the loss and the fact she's the only one who survived (cast supposedly symbolizing some sort of accident happened) and the boy is the only one who really realizes what she's going through although the parasocial relationship theory seems a bit more palpable, both make a lot of sense tbh and are very unsettling
The accident theory is so dumb and doesn't fit the whole concept of NewJeans and Ditto at all. Every single thing in Ditto MVs points to the parasocial relationship theory and it fits perfectly. Especially her taping her "imaginary friends" who are idols she likes, and then realizing they're not really there for her, they're only a video she can watch on the internet (tape), but it comforts her to see them. Then there's the guy and she's torn between fiction and reality in all the scenes including him (especially beginning of Side B when she's with the members outside of school), and the one where she walks away with him sums it all up -> she chose reality, but she reminds herself that the idols she liked are always there for her whenever she wants to watch/listen to them (members coming to her house when she puts the tape in and saying "it's been so long"). Just everything makes perfect sense, in the opposite to the accident theory...

did y’all check out the bts mv storyline? atleast i need u and run? hybe is known for storylines so i knew something was coming with new jeans. i like it a lot :)) the bts universe is HUGE but i only mention those 2 videos bc they’re the most insane ones sorta for me
also from what i heard about a movie called ditto (2000) where two high school students were from the same school, one from 1979 and the other from 2000 and they were only able to communicate with other only through amateur radios, they felt in love and then they found out they were 30 years apart… i was planning to watch this movie and last year was released a remake version of this movie and i think it’s available on HiTV

Loved how they pretty well interpreted coming of age as you grow older you are drawn more to reality and those interests you have whether it be in music like kpop or different scenes life will always take over but those comforts or hobbies may not go away and can always come back to in times of need or to remember a happy time. kinda like realising your imaginary friends aren't real thankful for the friendships but now its time to make real friends and connections sorta. the deer is supposed to represent innocense i think. the story itself with ditto as a story could have multiple interpretations as the girls are in a different uniform some believe they were in a accident and either passed (ghosts helping her move on without them - at end she rewacthes tapes only she can see them there) or maybe OMG is where they ended up and she gets left behind at a different school imagining them there to help her navigate this new place (i.e. broken arm). Also the name of the character Ban Hee-Soo actually has a youtube channel and they have been uploading all the little video clips on to as if its real super neat marketing/ behind the scenes almost still going now everyday.
