Avdiivka has long been recognizes as important, but there is this thing, importance vs resources lost to take something/defending something. Amount russia is willing to lose for such places is staggering that its importance is not as high. It was shocking to see Ukrainian soldiers leaving their own fellow wounded soldiers behind, thousands were left to die in Avdiivka.
The Ukrainians rarely leave their 300's behind, whereas the ones with the motto 'we don't leave our own' often do just that.

We know that Ukrainian army defeated in Adviivka. We know that they had to leave the town without taking some sophisticated military equipment. We know that 3rd Brigade had to move in and provide some form of safety for routing soldiers in the area. We know that they didn't have any time to establish traps or cover the are with mines, since Russians just captured the city in one day. There were some videos of Ukrainian conwoys getting ambushed by Russians while exiting Adviivka. When we add all of these together, it's safe to assume that they left large groups of wounded or captured behind.
You can't take prisoners while you're running away either. So I don't know what you're talking about in the last part of your comment.

I seriously doubt Putin has any interest in any peace deal. Not as long as he keeps advancing. He needs to be stopped on the battlefield first so that there can be negotiations.

If not for them the war would most likely have stopped only 3 months after it started, because of them it is still going on and even if by a miracle Ukraine wins it will be so in debt to NATO countries that it's sovereignty will only exist in paper. You are wrong to paint this as Russia taking a "Ukrainian" city. In reality it was a pro Russian rebel city, a suburb of DPR capital Donetsk which Ukraine had used to attack Donetsk for 10 years. The Ukrainian soldiers who held it were from other parts of Ukraine and were looked upon as hated occupiers. Many of the Russian units who stormed Avdeevka were local DPR fighters who were fighting for their home turf and finally got revenge. So the right side won.
