  • If you’re searching for bush planes, this video will touch upon some of the most affordable and reliable models available on the market. We’ll look at their current price and technical specifications, as well as their interiors or cabin setup. Watch the whole episode so you can see our top pick!
    Bush airplanes were initially designed for Canada's remote north and the harsh environments of Alaska. These are essentially piston-engine aircraft outfitted with skis, tundra tires, or floats. They feature high-mounted wings that offer more clearance and help reduce damage while loading and larger flaps that help performance on short-field takeoffs and landings. Nowadays, bush planes are used all over the world, from New Zealand's rugged mountains, and Kenya's dry deserts, to the lush Amazon jungles. They're the perfect aircraft for daring, non-traditional pilots.

    Keep in mind that you can expect to spend an additional $80-100k on top of the kit price to finish it; the kit prices doesn't include avionics ($30k or so), engine ($40k) and paint.

      Thank you for the additional information regarding the cost of finishing a kit-built aircraft. It's important to keep in mind that the initial kit price is just one part of the total cost of building an aircraft, and there are many additional expenses that can add up quickly. Builders will also need to factor in the cost of tools, materials, and any specialized equipment or services that may be required.

    All excellent planes in their own right. All have strengths and weaknesses. Aluminum vs fabric vs Carbon fiber. Carburetor vs Fuel Injection. Steam gauges vs Glass cockpit. Stored in a Hangar vs Outside. Float/ ski capable? The kit prices (Amateur Home Built) never includes the Firewall forward (engine, exhaust, coolers, sensors, cowl), Propeller ($2-12,000), Panel, paint and / or finishing. As an aircraft builder, count on 2-5X the kit price to complete. Experienced builder with a work space count on 18 months to build. Inexperienced builder working in a home garage 3-10 years. Advantage to Home built is owner maintenance (huge cost saving - annual and routine service). Down side - documentation of the builder using Approved Aeronautical Building Standards or are they using the local hardware / auto store. Yes, the plane will be examined prior to first flight but what then later? Cheap bolts fracture. Non aviation Rivets corrode. Lots of sketchy stuff flying.

      I just saw a separate vid on the Zenith. The claimed takeoff AND landing distance is 100 ft., with a rate of climb of 3000-4000 ft/min. That's what the manufacturer SAID, anyway. This is for the SuperSTOL XL (extra long?). The upped the HP from 100 to 180, and extended the fuselage 2 ft., moving the CG aft to compensate for the heavier engine.

    I have to say that the whole concept of seeking out the cheapest plane to trust your life to in the harsh flight environment of the bush is very much like looking for the lowest bid from a brain surgeon. In 6 years in Alaska my son's pastor and two passengers flew off apparently to be wth God, since they've never been seen since. a Beaver with six people was struck by another two seater flown by a State rep...all 7 people died in my son's back yard. I did meet an 85 year old bush pilot in Anchorage who had walked away from a handful of crashes. But really, guys, a bush plane is only a couple of steps safer than jumping off a mountain in a Wing Suit.

    • @AviationFederation
      @AviationFederation  Год назад +2

      We can understand your concern and apprehension regarding the safety of bush planes. It is true that flying in small aircraft, particularly in remote areas with harsh weather conditions, can be inherently risky. However, it is also important to note that many bush pilots are highly experienced and well-trained individuals who take safety very seriously. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to weigh the risks and benefits of flying in a bush plane, and to make an informed decision based on their personal comfort level and safety concerns.

      @@AviationFederation when I worked for the air force at Tinker AFB just out of college I met a lot of small plane enthusiasts. Many had bought surplus Stearman's after the war. Heard no horror stories, although I met one guy who had lived on an acreage outside Wichita with a Supercub? Who took off by attaching a cable to a swiveling post and going round and round in a circle till he was airborne and then releasing the cable. But once I spent time in Alaska I realized that an awful lot of the pilots I met or heard about tended to think flying was just only slightly different from driving a car. Not true at all, I thought your article might appeal to folks like that. Lost a couple of good friends in S Texas flying home from Houston (school architect and two school board members) because the red hang tag in the cockpit that showed some of the controls were locked had faded and torn in two. Crashed on takeoff. And then there was the local young crop duster took up the elementary school librarian to show her how safe flying was. Fatal crash in a cotton field outside Sinton. My wife's uncle and his brother flew commercial jets for their whole working life. In their 80's now, so obviously......a safe pilot is one from the deep end of the gene pool.....shallow end maybe not (I would count myself in the shallow end, based on 50 years of mishaps).

    A kit plane is not cheap. Kinda tired of these videos alleging such an erroneous contention. To make a full and fair apples-apples comparison of aircraft prices you MUST include the cost of the engine (not included in kits), avionics (not included in kits), and the gorilla in the room, the LABOR to complete the build.

    • @AviationFederation
      @AviationFederation  Год назад

      You raise a valid point. While kit planes may appear to be cheaper than ready-to-fly aircraft at first glance, the additional costs you mentioned, such as the engine and avionics, can add up quickly. Furthermore, building a kit plane requires a significant investment of time and labor, which must also be factored into the total cost. That's precisely why many enthusiasts consider this a labor of love! It's essential to carefully consider all of these factors before making a decision about whether a kit plane is a cost-effective choice for your aviation needs.

    Hmm. Designed for Canada? Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are American planes designed for the homebuilder. Hmm.

    • @AviationFederation

      You bring up an interesting observation about the nationality and design focus of the aircraft in the list. Indeed, many homebuilt aircraft, including the ones in the list, originate from the United States and cater to the homebuilder community. Design considerations often reflect the needs and preferences of the local aviation culture and regulations. Do you have any thoughts on how aircraft designed for specific regions (especially in North America) might differ in terms of features or suitability for certain missions?
