I've watched several videos of the green flash, and they all seem rather subtle. Possibly due to auto color balance on the cameras. I've seen one in person and it was quite obvious, an emerald green flash that lasted almost a second. This was over a high desert in Utah. Judging by the reaction of these folks, they are seeing something similar or even better. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the effect.
"According to la légende, as Jules Verne writes in his romantic novel, the green ray signals to the one who sees it that everything in life has come together in the most perfect way, leading to a happiness that is surely complete." 💚
I used to see it all the time when I lived in Melbourne, on the East coast of Port Phillip Bay. It was very bright green and indeed did only last a few seconds.
@@Rude_Boi I haven't been to the cliffs for a long time. Might go in a couple weeks, wifey always likes La Jolla, but when I was younger, I always went to the cliffs.
The green flash is not only seen over water- it is simply seen more commonly over water because more people are watching the sunset at beaches than in most other sufficiently reflective locales. It is primarily an atmospheric condition that can occur with sand or snow as a reflective surface, as well as water. An observer in Fairbanks,Alaska recently reported seeing the green flash at sunset when there was a strong temperature inversion (and much ice fog) in the Tanana Valley. The green flash may last only a second or so near the time when the last edge of the sun goes down in the evening OR even sometimes when the first edge of the sun comes up in the morning. Many more people watch the sunset than the sunrise and those who are even up at sunrise are usually working and VERY few others are waiting and watching closely for the sun to breach the horizon. The green flash is the result of the atmosphere acting like a weak prism to bend each color of the sun's light by different amounts. The separation of color is small but sometimes enough to remove from our view the red and yellow light coming from the edge of the sun above the horizon. This leaves only blue and green light but the blue tends to be scattered most by the air. So, if conditions are just right, a portion of pure green sun, “the green flash”, will be seen briefly. Rarely, it might even flash several times because of air motion in the light path. Sometimes, for the same reason, the green edge of the sun seems to detach itself and then is suddenly gone. The green flash was familiar to the ancient Egyptians who apparently saw it often in the clear desert air. At any rate, just because more people see it near the sea at sunset does not mean that it does not occur elsewhere at other times- no one owns the sun or has a monopoly on what it can or cannot do.
Miguel Serrano talked about the Green Ray at Sunset, sure quite a good Light watcher. I, Alex Topic think of the Green Ray (Flash) as a color of Equilibrium since with RGB (G = green is in the middle). cdefgab (f = middle key (chord))
We used to get Green Flash's Palate Wrecker IPA here in New England up until about five years ago. They cut back on their distribution reach, unfortunately for us. Never knew about the origin of the name.
Yeah...nothing makes a beautiful, subtle moment more perfect than idiots blowing horns, talking on (what sounds like) a bullhorn and going "Woo HOO" at the top of their lungs. Just great.
I’m red green color blind so my brain has trouble distinguishing different colors. For that reason I never see one. Saw a sunset in Hawaii where the whole beach cheered and I had no idea why. Had to be told after.
I saw a Green Flash in the Arctic. Off-shore drilling for oil. Just as the upper limb of the sun became coincidental with the horizon, a brilliant emerald green flash of light that lasted 3 - 4 seconds. Long enough for me to gasp and yell, "Quick, come look!" . Well, going by that, maybe 2 seconds. But, I'll never forget it.
WOW!!!! I saw NOTHING but the sunset! I was on 5 different US aircraft carriers....Indian Ocean, Pacific and NOT once did I ever see a green flash. NOT ONCE!!! Peace!!!
This is the only good video of the green flash. And to all who say there is no "flash" its not like a camera flash, its a fade of color real fast, like 1 or 2 seconds it turns a bright green just before the sun goes all the way down. Quite the site!

the vibrant red hues of the sunset make your eyes more perceptive to the green -- not so much when watching it on a screen
Solution: Manual exposure and WB
I have seen a few.
@@ir8free - Excellent points but beyond the capability of most cellphone photographers which includes me. 😎
Iv watched a bunch of these videos and I never see a flash. I see the sun turn a little green but that's it
13 year old video. Crisp. No music and an amazing event. Perfection!
I'd think the calm water is crucial.
Agree
No music but a load of idiots whooping
Just a bunch of airheads whooping like imbeciles.
Ever gazed upon the green flash, Master Gibbs?

Watched 7 "green flash" videos on youtube just now and this is the first actual green flash. Good catch!
I have seen the green flash, and it IS awesome!
Same here, off the coast of San Diego a few years back. Couldn't get a good pic of it but it was still really cool.
Ever gaze upon the green flash Master Gibbs
What no ufo attack, sky noises, pictures in the sky?

Years ago we vacationed in the Florida keys, every sunset we looked for the flash of green but it never happened.
In the plain where I live I've looked for the flash a number of times, and it never shows. Is this a water-dependent phenomenon?
