"feels like something's wrong with me and they know it, they took one look my way and exposed it." is a really hard hitting line for someone with autism. more often than not allistic people (people without autism) can identify autism nearly immediately, whether theyre aware of it or not. its also common for allistic people to get an uncanny valley affect from autistics.

As an autistic person who was diagnosed later in life this hit beyond hard. That feeling that everyone looks at you and sees something strange and uncanny without you yourself knowing what that thing is. The nagging feeling of everyones eyes clocking you as soon as they see you and they don't realize what they know but they know something is bad about you. The bullying for everything even normal things. The feeling that everyone on earth is in on a joke and your the one it's about. And if course the eventual realization that what they see, the big difference they all notice but no one cares enough to explain is not just them it is a part of you and it will always be there. That feeling is so strong and scary and explosive. God I love this show.

Okay, you people are actually making things a lot worse by spreading this idea that getting diagnosed and “treated” as a child would have been good for you or anyone else. You’re basically spreading misinformation that functions as propaganda for systemic ab-se. I was diagnosed when I was in 4th grade and it did nothing to improve my life whatsoever. In fact it made everything harder and more exhausting. I wish now I had just gone to school and had a normal experience instead of dealing with the years of being pulled out of the classes I enjoyed(because only those you're good at are the ones they pull you out of for counseling) to fill out ridiculous worksheets about what obvious drawings of mad/happy faces mean what, that did nothing for me, or for the higher support needs kids who had it worse than me.
And to get absolutely useless and even detrimental social advice from people who honestly universally seemed to not know what they were doing. And it got the kids who ignorantly listened to them bullied worse.
From elementary up til the very last year of high school it was the same story for me and every other diagnosed kid I met. Which was a lot, my parents ignored everything I said and sent me to loads of useless places even during the summer to "fix" me as much as possible. (Before you dismiss them as bad eggs, every single counselor, therapist, and place they sent me to did say that autistic people can't and don't have to be "fixed," but that didn't change anything about how worryingly incompetent and detrimental their practices were.)
In-school and out, reputable people and places would teach that it was good to force autistic people to waste their energy performing social skills (and often a ridiculous exaggeration of social skills, with canned scripts and an unspoken demand I go along with whatever exact kinds of responses that professional was looking for, which took even more energy than normal social interactions for me) and pretended people actually acted that way in real life. And they would take away accommodations as punishment if a kid voiced their exhaustion or concerns, no matter how kindly or politely, and many were too exhausted to act politely enough anyway.
And knowing I was autistic and how autistic people act only meant they would target and punish autistic behaviors. My parents were often advised to grab my hands and force them down if I flapped them to stim, and to stop me from reading about or getting too interested in any one topic too much to keep it from becoming a special interest, unless it was obviously something that looked like it could be money making.
I got pulled out of classes for this BS. I missed out on years of my favorite subject, English, and there's actually a lot about the subject I don't know now and I can't pursue the job I want because of it.
All it did was exhaust me. And pulling me out of classes to force me to perform social skills was legitimately the reason I was too exhausted to finish as much homework as I could have otherwise, and eventually forced me to be held back a year.
The only good thing I got out of being diagnosed was being allowed an IEP that would allow me to have less homework. But it wasn't enough to make up for the exhaustion of being pulled out of class every year of school to waste energy on this ridiculous protocol school professionals (and even outside professionals) are apparently taught. I might have struggled anyway, but I know for a fact that going without a diagnosis would have made things easier. I would easily give up an IEP if it would prevent the damage they did.
And I'm young. This was recent. I live in a rich place in California and I'm only 22. It is a systemic issue. You people were not missing out.
Getting diagnosed young does not mean people would have been more accepting or your life would be easier. It throws you into a system that will actively work to your detriment. Saying otherwise only makes it even more unlikely anything about it will ever change. I know you'll never believe me, but surprisingly, what professionals have been (and still are) taught to do to us can actually be wrong, and cause more harm than good, in this society.

Tina wonders if she needs to fix herself, “fill in the cracks” while facing a cracked window. But the cracks are coming from the gunfire on the outside. A lot of anxiety that comes with autism is caused by others making you feel inadequate because you’re different. You don’t know how but you want to fix the cracks, but you’re not the one making the cracks to begin with.

The windows getting cracked as she's singing about "them seeing her cracks" is a bit above what this show normally does, and that's not a dig at the show. More that there was a genuine maturity in this episodes story telling, being as much or more visual than verbal. Entire parts were silent, being told through what was shown. If they nail this second part, these night end up the best 2 episodes of the show. It's clear they are prepping us for the movie as well as showing off their improved talents at cinematic moments

I was getting a little worried when they came out with this new season that they may be losing their spark (even though season 12 already had some great episodes in them) BUT this episode and the following made my jaw drop. When this song came on I was in disbelief how entertained I was and how beautiful the lyrics and melody was. It genuinely felt like something was wrong with me.
I still feel that way sometimes.
Why do I have to be autistic..?
I think about how I can fix it- I want to but it's literally impossible.
There is only so much masking I can do to make it go away.

Hey, I’m also autistic, and if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from having so many great autistic friends and one incredibly kind autistic sister, autistic people (a lot, not all) are some of the nicest people that you’ll ever meet, there’s nothing wrong with you for having autism, it’s just a different way of thinking, the people that make you feel that way are just ignorant and refuse to accept people that are different ❤

I’m getting tested for Autism tomorrow, everyone in my life has told me at least once that they think I’m some sort of neurodivergent. When I was younger (and still now) I loved/love bobs burgers, this song has played such a big part in the journey of talking to my school guidance consular about it to now getting assessed for ASD. To all the neurodivergent people, just know you are cared for, you matter, your disability matters even if you can’t always see it❤️
Update: I am going into the next phase of testing aka just getting the official diagnosis❤️

I never realized just how much this song meant to me until I really totally no longer felt imperfect all the time. It's like the world is alwayse rushing you to become something that's impossible to judge, while dropping obstacles to get in the way of you figuring it out. This song perfectly captures that feeling like we'll never be good enough and how noone really ever feels like they're on the same page as us.

I love how universal this is, we don’t always realize that everybody feels like an outsider, this episode was amazing, and the real emotional payoff was the reveal that Tammy was only judging people because she was afraid of being judged, followed by the dance montage of robots experiencing being a unique and emotional individual.

I remember being the undiagnosed “weird kid” in middleschool I got bullied over a cat sweater my grandma made me in front of the whole class and I couldn’t understand why. I felt like this song, that they were in on something. That there was some uncanny weirdness to me that everyone else knew but no one would tell me. That they could so casually mock things I liked and the way I acted and it was my responsibility to fix it. I know a lot of comments are sharing there story and I’m so sorry you all faced bullying and isolation. I think we would’ve been friends

Bobs burgers has been a show I’ve been viewing for YEARS. But this was truly an incredible piece performed in a comedic series. Especially since the singers aren’t even super talented, but the meaning actually made me emotional, especially since a lot of teenagers like me, find themselves extremely self conscious over something. Tina was always an extremely relatable character, who was just trying to be themselves, and fit in at the same time. This was truly a pleasant surprise in season 12. And i’m sure I’m not the only one who found themselves getting a bit teary eyed over this musical number.

I know Mabel felt the same way as Tina in the Gravity Falls episode Irrational Treasure, about not being able to act like her true self without Pacifica making fun of her. Tammy and Jocelyn would for sure have a field day with Wow or Weird if they went to Gravity Falls. Even without the weirdness of Gravity Falls, they would have plenty of mean comments about Mabel's sweaters like Pacifica did. June 19, 2022, 2:50am

    Lyrics:
    Tina:
    What if they're right?
What if I'm weird and better off wiped?
    Front to back
    All my cracks
    What if they're right?
What if the me that lives inside
Is something I should try to hide?
    Jimmy Jr:
    What if they're right?
What if my vest is odd?
    Zeke:
Okay if I still eat a burger if I'm a bot.
    I'm hungry.
    Tina:
Is it so bad to steer off course?
And wear a shirt with a really cool horse?
    Bob:
How do they know what I feel in my soul
that I might just be poop or crap?
    Linda:
Honey, I worry you're gettin' a little too focused on bathroom feedback?
    Louise:
I thought that we could have it all
    Gene:
We're never gonna taste those balls
    Bob & Tina:
Feels like something's wrong with me and they know it
They took one look my way and exposed it
    Tina:
I'm ready to give up the fight
And just admit that they are right.

Seeing a lot of relatable people in this comment thread. Seeing a few smart-aleks that have not yet learned to embrace the beauty within sincerity and pathos, but I like them anyway. As a person who has looked at his reflection and used to see it with eyes that made me think the mirror was cracked, it is good to know there are many Tina types out there.
I didn't have a family like Tina, but these days, they have been coming through in little ways that have big effects. Anyone out there who is feeling wounded, believe in yourself and let time close and heal those wounds. Anyone who has their important people either failing to understand, or worse, constantly misunderstanding, it helps to have patience rather than embittered feelings. Give anyone time and they may come around.
My teenage years were miserable. My twenties were even worse. In my thirties I almost died. Now, life has gotten pretty good, even though it has began to have heaps of death go with it. Nature is strange. Rotten parts can make everything strong and healthy. Never give up on loving each other. Keep on daring to dream!
