Which laser or CNC router to use?
There are many lasers and CNC routers out there with different features and costs, so instead of recommending a particular laser or CNC router, I will just list the important features a laser or a CNC router should have in order to produce good results when doing marquetry or inlay.
1. Size
If you can estimate the size of the largest piece in your artwork, then use that to determine the size of your laser or CNC router working area. On occasions, the largest piece can be larger than the machine can handle, in this case, cut it into smaller pieces while aligning the grains at the joints to achieve a more natural transition. In this video I use the Epilog Mini 18 (18x12 inches).
2. Accuracy
For either laser or CNC router, look at the specifications and select the one which has an accuracy better than 0.005 inches without turning on software backlash compensation. Software backlash compensation is unreliable, because software cannot know when to apply compensation and often compensate when not needed. If your machine is not this accurate, excessive gaps will be present, but can easily be filled with colored wood paste before gluing the assembled pieces onto a backing substrate.
3. Holding down the material
Laser has an exhaust outlet that you can attach a blower to suck out the smoke. Make sure this exhaust outlet is below the material so that the air suction can pull the material down flat on the cutting surface. Wood veneers expand when in contact with water-base glue such as PVA glue, so if there is a small gap between the pieces, this expansion will help to close the gap. This expansion property of wood veneers places less restriction on how flat the veneers must be, or how accurate the CNC is, in order to produce a tightly fit design.
For CNC router, the best method to hold down the veneers are low tack double sided tapes. CNC vacuum hold-down system is not good enough to hold down small pieces.
4. Printing to the machine
ImagePaint is an Adobe Illustrator plugin, so if the laser supports printing (sending final cutting file to the laser) from within Illustrator, then it is more convenient, otherwise, ImagePaint can export the file as .svg or .dxf file to be printed in other software that support the laser.
For CNC router, ImagePaint already support many Post Processors, but we can add support if your CNC is not in this list.
What previously took years of practice can now be learned in several hours with the right tools, it is a great development and will allow more people to make their lives beautiful :^)
@Steve Stevenson You must be a glass half empty kind of person.
Those Epilog Machines are amazing. I had the privilege to use one for about 4 years and never realized how superior those machines are until I had to end up buying a Chinese one. Chinese machines you have to constantly maintain and adjust things. That extra 15,000 or so is worth the price for an Epilog. The accuracy, straight cut, precision, clean engraving, the Epilog is unmatched. Great work.
Thank you for the video! I learned a lot from this. I just got access to an engraver via a workshop studio I joined; This is an amazing application of this tool!
I'm impressed, as old as this is, I didn't realize that the tolerances could be set so finely that it creates a very tight fitting, and that the scorch marks can sanded away so cleanly. On the downside, zero access to a laser, so probably going to try the old fashioned method.
Bravo,amazing work🎉
Complimenti, bellissimo lavoro.
Wonderful video. I was inspired to get the software and the machine.
I then contacted the representatives here in Brazil to acquire one.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Hello,Alex Fabiano Imperatore

Amazing.... very nice work
tác phẩm rất đẹp chú ạ
Gluing veneer directly to hard wood means that, during seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood(which does not apply to veneer due to its thickness), the veneer will be torn apart and ruined.
Bullshit. Look at guitars.
Good video, but the music at the end is way too LOUD!
Subbed
Later marquetry or parquetry takes the craftsmanship out of the equation. Just another industrial, bohemith imita5ing talents that take a life time to develop
Cool
Well done. I hope that you will make another video clip same this one.
Can you tell me how much of the power and speed you setup for cutting that wood-veneer? I just worry that laser cut line's width is too big and then, when we assemble it together we can see that's cutting line is too clearly. But I watch on this video clip is can not see that laser cut line. It's really beautiful.
If you have time, please give to me the answer. Thank you very much!
With a 30W laser, to cut those wood veneers I set to 10 percent power and 25% speed. ImagePaint allows you to offset the path to compensate for the laser beam diameter, so the pieces will fit tightly, assuming the sharp corners in the vector design has been rounded to the laser beam diameter. In the latest ImagePaint software, a new feature was added to allow users to round those sharp corners automatically before offset path is applied. Yes, I will create another video using the latest ImagePaint software showing how to use the new features. Thanks for the great question!
Thank you very much!!! It's so helpful for me. So, when you create that video to showing how to use the ImagePaint software, I'll watch it and learn from it.
God bless you! Thank again!
Please shared link purchase machice laser? And how many price machine??
Thank you for sharing, good video. Question; can the same process
be obtained when you have concave or convex surface, and if you would what
laser would you recommend. Thank you and have a nice day.
Thank you for your comment. I have not tried surfaces other than flat, so I am not sure. Lasers are very accurate, so as long as it has enough power to cut through the veneers at a reasonable speed would be good. At a minimum, a laser should have at least 5 Watt power to cut the veneer. I recommend a low cost (a few hundred dollars) laser for this application. More expensive laser would be an overkill.
Thank you for your advice, have a nice day.
@@amazoncanvas Im very interested in this concept and it's versatility the software is also very cool. I wonder if you know if it could be applied to metal as well if you can recommend a laser and router to cut thin metal and also engrave embossed images meaning not just line engraving but a 3d image in metal. The other thing is I'm good at drawing out images and getting the detail I want. How can you convert a jpeg or png to vector format to transfer my drawings to a different surface like metal and wood? For example if I draw an eagle how to I go from a flat image I drew out in pencil to a head that's rounded feathers that are raised slightly off the surface that kind of thing. I also think it would be cool to scan and vector a veneer of burlwood and transfer the pattern onto another type of wood or even metal if you want.

CNC Router is better in cutting thin metal then laser. Our software, ImagePaint, is an Adobe Illustrator plug-in. In Illustrator there is a tool called ImageTrace that can take your drawing or .jpg image can convert it to vector artwork. ImagePaint helps you create inlay artwork, which is 2D. I don't know any software or machine that can create 3D image onto thin metal, but for 3D wood carving, you can look at Aspire software from Vectric.
Hi Vincet thanks for the video; what's the thickness of the veneer you use for this assembly : thanks
I used raw veneers purchased from the internet mostly at www.dyed-veneer.com/. I don't use dyed veneers nor paper backed veneers. The veneers I used are around 0.02 inch thick, but you can use thicker veneers if you like.
Where do you buy the veneer from? Looks like it is very flat which is important for laser cutting.
I buy my veneers from www.wood-veneers.com/ or www.certainlywood.com/ or www.veneersupplies.com/
Most veneers are very flat. Semi-flat veneers can be cut accurately too. There are inexpensive ways to flatten highly warp veneers.
you cut parts in exact dimensions or internal pieces you cut a little small than the external frame to can fit inside?
This is how ImagePaint software prepare the path for cutting: For shape that has holes inside, the outer shape is made larger and the inner shape is made smaller. For regular shape (one without hole), the shape is made larger. The amount ImagePaint uses to increase or decrease the shape size can be configured by you.
excuse me, which brands of machiny you use?
machinery
The one you see in the video is the Epilog mini 18
Amazing!!! I'm a bow maker from Argentina. I make some marquetry with veneers in the limbs of my bows. I wish to use your software and tools. What laser cutter and cnc can you recommend for my job? Thanks!!!
I just added a few paragraphs on how to select a laser or CNC router in the description area under the video. Thanks for asking!
Does it work with shell sheet inlay too?
And what is the name of the softaware and the laser engraver machine?
It works with shell sheet too and any materials that can be cut with laser. You can use any laser machine. Software from www.amazoncanvas.com called ImagePaint Production Pro
HI! What is the model of the CNC Laser in this video? Is it CO2?How many Watts do I need to Cut veener? Do You have any info?
I just added a few paragraphs on how to select a laser or CNC router in the description area under the video. Thanks for asking!
For cutting wood veneers, the laser only need 15 watts.
What CNC brand and type should i have to make this???
You can use any CNC or laser with the software. ImagePaint supports many CNC routers and it support all lasers. On rare occasions, some users reported that ImagePaint does not have the Post Processor that works with their CNC router. In this case it would take no more than a week for us to update the software with the new Post Processors.
hello.can i ask you about the tool you are using in illustrator? and how to add image to illustrator?
An Illustrator Plug-in called ImagePaint at www.amazoncanvas.com
What software are you using please?
The software used was Adobe Illustrator for the design and ImagePaint as an addon to AI for filling the design with the image of a veneer. ImagePaint can then be used to output to a Laser cutter (or CNC) cut the custom pieces.
Wish I could find a laser for this that didn't cost so much.
ImagePaint GCode Pro supports CNC routers, so you don't have to get a laser to do very intricate inlays using very small router bits (0.01 or 0.02 inch diameter tool)!
