Thanks for the video! My wife bought me one for Christmas. I’m a pilot and my wife thought I’d know how to fly this thing. WRONG! I’ve never flown an RC plane before. Tried it a few times at the beach and nose dived it a few times into the salt water ugh! Rinsed it off and WD-40’d it all over. Decided to take lessons on a simulator. Getting the hang of it now. 5 months later it’s still running great! Really like this plane.
Bruce, further to your crosswind comments. I flew mine in about 20 knot wind and found that when I tried to turn back into wind after getting blown sideways the aeroplane flipped over! Fortunately the wind then blew it back the right way up. This occurred twice before I gave it full welly and got it back in the air. One of the aileron servos didn't survive the experience so your comments on the servos are spot on. You showed on your landing there the high alpha capabilities of the aeroplane. Give low speed flight a go, you'll have a hoot. Enjoy.
Bruce, I love my Skipper too. I mostly take off and land on grass and it really loves a heavy dew in the early morning. I have lined the hull with a sacrificial layer of HK fibre reinforced tape and that saves it from any abrasion. Love the extensive flight envelope and especially its ability for high alpha and very manageable stall characteristics. Agree, it's a must have.
Hey partner, popping by in 2023 to say Thank You, Mr. Outlaw Flyer, Sir. This review started my ride with this lovely plane and fixed wing FPV - I bought one years ago after this video gave some weight to my anxious finger hovering over the "purchase" button on Hobbyking. Remember them? It was the first plane I FPV'd, I even threw a KK2 FC into that first, glorious little plane, (so underground)! Fast forward a couple years, and along with some grey in my beard, I just flashed iNav 6.0 on my Josway Dragonfly V2, a refreshed version of the ole Skipper. With about 20 planes under my belt since I started this fixed-wing FPV adventure, the Dorito is still my favorite plane to fly. Like my first car, everything else will forever compete with _the first._ (Mention this to my fiance and I will be killed, lol) Just wanted to say thank you, Mr. Simpson.
Like Jon mellis said, this looks just like the Polaris by Shumate and that flys like a dream. Must be the delta shaped wing. Nice to see a review like this!!
If I ever get back to Kona, I'll have to try that "lava" theory. Good review..looks to be a really fun plane. Coincidentally, flite-test just did a video on waterproofing components-was interesting as well...keep up the good work, Bruce and Happy Holidays!
Thanks for the great review and flight video Bruce! Perfect timing too as I just got one of these from Mrs Claus! ;-) My maiden will be off of snow though!
Oh Bruce, you just Gave those guys who are trying to shut you down, another good reason to ban you. You were going to kill innocent rare ducks in your video. Almost did it. we all did hear those ducks screaming for help and I think I saw one duck making a call to local FAA on its duck Cell phone too.
alishanmao Yes, it was very funny when doing some other very low passes that the ducks dive for cover when you pass over them. Now I know why you're supposed to "duck" when something flies near your head.
***** nonetheless, its a fun plane and you flew it well. Just be careful because i am sure those guys are still trying to find one more excuse to ban you. we do not want to see that. we want regular uploads from RCModelreviews :) keep up the good work buddy.
alishanmao Don't worry... I'm now a definite "outlaw flier" and I'm sure someone will have already complained bitterly about the huge risk my recent flying has posed to man, woman, child and ducks. I'll probably end up being prosecuted as well -- which will really remove any trace of doubt that this is all highly political and driven by vindictive old men. Merry Chistmas Ali and here's looking forward to a great 2015 :-)
Looks like a hell of a lot of fun! :D Might have to put it on my wish list later in the year. Although I think just learning to fly in the local park (or more accurately, crashing in the local park) will have to do for now.
Well i had a bad motor (DOA) in mine. But before I figured it out. 3 different recievers and transmitters I found out the"jitters" had more to do with transmitter and reciever combinations.
The wooden (larger) original of this design is Laddie Mikulasko's North Star (also kitted by Balsa USA). There is a more modern pure delta version called the Arrow. Both available in plans on Outerzone. Would be excellent FPV platforms, the Arrow could even be "useful" (I live 200 km from Ukraine...).
I got one last Christmas. I like it better on snow. Flying over water makes me nervous. I can see why they call it Skipper. It skips a lot. Like a flat rock thrown across a pond. I put a layer of fiberglass on the bottom because it wears down pretty quickly on grass and snow. I did a good fiberglassing job though, not a hack/thrash job like you see on RC aircraft all over the internet these days.
BMSWEB this will take off and land on a small lake , will also take off and land on grass. my home made polaris is great to fly and looks exactly the same
I am pleased that no ducks were harmed in the making of that video. the animal activists would have been all over you if we're to strike one of the ducks. Your second landing was a thing of beauty.....the first one.....not so much.😁😁. Nice looking plane both on the water and in the air. ROG
Ten out of ten for that second landing (watering?) The control you displayed throughout this whole flight illustrates that the grumpy old mens' argument is political and not skill related. Not only did you fairly and thoroughly review a product, you wowed a whole family. Top marks to you sir.
Wow d'ya know what Bruce I rather fancy one of those. Not flown planes much lately as I am enjoying the minis so much. Out practicing for team nana today =D TTFN Malc
Hey Bruce,if you are getting into water sports check out the Flitetest website they just posted a video on waterproofing components using CorrosionX and other techniques. CorrosionX really works well for servos and receivers. Great review as always Happy Holidays and keep up the good work
Nice review you outlaw...lol. This plane looks like some fun times, but maybe not if you try the lava landing. Most kids want to see it go, but some kid in the background wants to know how to stop it...kids are funny.
Cool little plane Bruce, flared like a duck on landing the first time too. Joe Public were enjoying the show as well, lucky you didn`t spill the beans on Obama`s NZ drone program!
very nice model and review, a good idea to give it a water rudder, however if you did extend the rudder down, would it still be able to takeoff and land on grass (or crowds of angry children)?
Seems like a nice plane but in case you want to use it on grass or snow, how easy is it to hand throw? And is it tough enough to handle asphalt landings? Thanks and keep it up! Oh! And how about some led's for some night flying on the lake? Too much? :)
Miguel Coelho Sadly, it is forbidden to fly RC models at night in this country -- that's the law (firmly rooted in the 1960s, before LEDs were invented).
Oh Ali you know you want one. But since Lanyu doesn't make one you can't get it for free. So I don't think you will be doing your own review soon. Love you Bro.
If you still got this plane I highly recomend to remove styrofoam spinner... removes vibration and motor gets air to cool down better, but I warn you, there is no (shaft)adapter in prop. Prop might get off balance some day.
G'day Bruce, Lovely, it looks great fun to fly, even if half of those Ducks do finish up with unresolved insecurity-complexes after being traumatised like that by being pursued and closely harrassed by such culturally Alien Technology... They'll probably consistently over-eat for the rest of their lives, and each tragically-traumatised Duckie will finish up the size of a Goose ; whereupon they'll no doubt stand for election to the Board of Directors at MAFA, probably due to the Herd-Instinct, birds of a feather tending to flock together, as they do, and there are already so very many fat old Geese gobbling about the place & obviously running the MAFA...(?)..! I could be extrapolating, with perhaps a dash of speculation, and maybe spiced with a note of excoriation, even...; but, such is reportage in today's modern world, eh, what ? ;-p Ciao !
I had my first actual crash "damaging" with this plane only a few months ago after 3 years flying I just got disoriented by the sun thought it was the right way up well it wasn't both wings were shorn of by y fork in a well now it has so much carbon fibre and fibreglass if I was that tree I would be sleeping with one eye open
just a suggestion why don't you team up with others on RUclips from around the world that review or fly planes that have over 10,000 followers form a group and talk about the rules that they are trying to bring in. Create some recommendation on training, certification for all aspects of flying from planes quadro-copters and FPV for both recreational and commercial use. Put together some finding and present it to the different organisations creating a global set of recommendation on the rules and how they can manage the growth in the industry. With support from other like minded people you can combine your reach and prove with discussions that you can help inform the community quickly of these changers that will then be unified globally. just a suggestion

Been eyeing one since I built a Polaris out of fan fold foam.Bruce you convinced me to pull the trigger, adding a Skipper to the fleet! Happy flying!
Thanks Bruce. Enjoied another video. Very Helpful and informative. Answered alot of my questions, I had with this model

Mine has been fined for one year +. Saltwater, snow and rain... Love it!

"... Lava, crowds of angry children,..." LOL! Good to hear some humor back Bruce 😉
Good to see you flying again.
Beautiful flight! I'm going out tomorrow with my flying buddy, he'll be flying his skipper. He agrees, it's a really nice plane.

Thanks for the kind words1
Looks like I'm going to have to learn how to fly planes, I have the perfect canal runway...Thanks for the review.
Like Jon mellis said, this looks just like the Polaris by Shumate and that flys like a dream. Must be the delta shaped wing.
Nice to see a review like this!!
Great little review. One day I'm going to get a skipper. I'd love to try it on fresh powder snow :-)
Perfect timing too as I just got one of these from Mrs Claus! ;-)
My maiden will be off of snow though!
Great flight and landings! Very nice review as always.
Bruce bought my Dad one for Christmas. Mainly to deal with snow and the Canadian winters.
that second landing was goooorgeos

Are those ducks even allowed to fly?
John Smith Or: do the ducks have their wings?
Looks like Steve Shumates Polaris. Takes off on grass, snow or water. Aerobatic. Great fun doing touch and goes on grass.
Looks like a hell of a lot of fun! :D Might have to put it on my wish list later in the year. Although I think just learning to fly in the local park (or more accurately, crashing in the local park) will have to do for now.
That landing was perfect.

Bwaaa haaa haaa!!!!!
Excellent flying video sir!
Loved the Ali Cam footage!!
Flitetest has a method of waterproofing your rc electronics and model... Good combo for flying this plane!!!
Wow... another great model from Hobby King.
... really nice, Bruce! :-) Love it!
Maybe put in FPV gear and fly it. Must be really nice to start and land on water with FPV :-)
Looks like a copy of my scratch built Polaris that Ive had for a few years. It's a beautiful flyer and easily takes off from a grass field as well.
Brilliant! Thanks for posting.
Nice video and nice plane.
Nice bit of kit. Love your reviews.
What do you think to the radiolink AT10 Any good or what....??
I got one last Christmas. I like it better on snow. Flying over water makes me nervous. I can see why they call it Skipper. It skips a lot. Like a flat rock thrown across a pond. Great review! How about FPV? I'm wondering if you could fit some waterproof setup and probably some bigger battery as well? Hope it would lift it.
I kinda like this one. Never owned or flown a plane that can land and take off on water!! Just need to find somewhere to fly it.
Recon the Bass Straight might big enough Paul :)
I doubt it's that stable on the waters of bass straight :P
BMSWEB this will take off and land on a small lake , will also take off and land on grass. my home made polaris is great to fly and looks exactly the same
Docklands?
I am pleased that no ducks were harmed in the making of that video. the animal activists would have been all over you if we're to strike one of the ducks. Your second landing was a thing of beauty.....the first one.....not so much.😁😁. Nice looking plane both on the water and in the air. ROG
Reminds me, I need to build my Polaris Depron precut kit I lazily bought from someone ages ago.
Thanks, trying to remember the name of this clone. Polaris.
Ten out of ten for that second landing (watering?) The control you displayed throughout this whole flight illustrates that the grumpy old mens' argument is political and not skill related. Not only did you fairly and thoroughly review a product, you wowed a whole family. Top marks to you sir.
See my Porco Rosso version of Shumates Polaris, look for "Porco flies again".
And yes I agree, it flies as on rails.
Wow d'ya know what Bruce I rather fancy one of those. Not flown planes much lately as I am enjoying the minis so much.
Out practicing for team nana today =D
TTFN Malc
RCTV-UK Keep up the practice Malc, I can see we're going to have to meet up and do some serious nana-racing some day ;-)
***** Now that sounds like a plan, I have relatives in Browns Bay NZ so I could do the whole 2 birds one stone thing =D
Hey Bruce,if you are getting into water sports check out the Flitetest website they just posted a video on waterproofing components using CorrosionX and other techniques. CorrosionX really works well for servos and receivers. Great review as always Happy Holidays and keep up the good work
Nice job!! Have you flown it off grass?
You should give that to your buddy with the chainsaw for xmas, maybe he can get a few design ideas :)
Why isn t the hitec aurora 9x review coming?
Hi bruce, flitetest just made a video on how to waterproof all your electronics. They still work under water!
Flite Test just did a good primer on making things water resistant.
A fixed wing review! Yay.
very nice model and review, a good idea to give it a water rudder, however if you did extend the rudder down, would it still be able to takeoff and land on grass (or crowds of angry children)?

Wet the grass, dish soap on the hull helps too.
***** Hey Bruce
Could you make a build video on a Hydrofoam/hydroplane I would love to see you do one
what happens if the plane fall into water with propeller in the water?
The motor itself is brushless, therefore waterproof. Getting it upright is the tough part.
Oh Ali you know you want one. But since Lanyu doesn't make one you can't get it for free. So I don't think you will be doing your own review soon. Love you Bro.
ou acheter ce produit merci
Oh were can you be hobbyking turbine engine?
I dare you to try landing on lava and a crowd of angry children. 😉
don't pull up to hard. you can cavitate the prop. My motor came loose from the mount. Now I have to get into the nacelle to fix it.
looks like a real fun way to meet girls at my local lake park.
How do you stop it, we'll get to that later. :-) That cracked me up, no need to worry about landing it, just fly it...
have you been working out
Nailed it
Hk skipper's design almost the same like electrifly seawind ep.Try to compare them.Foam vs wood construction seaplane.
Hey Bruce, how's the dispute going with the grumpy old men who banned you from flying?
If you still got this plane I highly recomend to remove styrofoam spinner... removes vibration and motor gets air to cool down better, but I warn you, there is no (shaft)adapter in prop. Prop might get off balance some day.
Nice!
Black Flag in the bench. Have you been debugging circuits?
Marvyn Harris LOL... no, it's the usual summer-time plague of flies around here. Not as bad as Australia -- but close.
That is a fast plane.
I want to see you fly it from lava now!!!!!!
hehe well i guess you did read my comment on lava .
try out the Icon A5!!! it is way better
outlaw flyers unite!
"How do you stop it"? LOL 😂 Hit the brakes kid, hit the brakes!!!
how much does it cost. how high can you go, how fast does it go? can I try run after it. will you fly it into me....kids
Are those duck payed up for the year so they can fly legally............
"How do you stop it?" - call MFNZ
just kidding Bruce.
