Go Edna! The World Loves You! Your spontaneous, penetrating, rapid wit reigns supreme around the planet--you entertained many of us for a full lifetime, we love you so very much. Mrs. Norman Everage (nee Miss Edna May Beasley), morphed into our beloved Dame Edna Everage and what a ride it was :-) Also, RIP Dr. Sir Les Patterson--you ripped our sides apart with your talent using the best medicine ever--laughter :-)
Its impossible NOT to think of Edna as a real persn. And a woman. I know full well its Barry Humphries. Doesn't matter. Dame Edna is real. Dame Edna lives!
It's amazing all the jokes the New Yorkers miss in this! I'm surprised Charles is a huge fan considering the 'Greek sailor' joke as she shuffles in her seat.
Easily my personal favorite transvestite satirist EVER! 8~} Much thanks to whoever shared. (I still laugh whenever I remember her on her own show accusing k.d. lang of being a CANADIAN!!! 8~>)
Phil couldn't handle being totally outshone and upstaged by Dame Edna is trying unsuccessfully to undermine Dame Edna's superiority emphasizing Madge's presence at every turn!!!
Americans, you do know it’s Barry Humphries & he just passed away early this morning. Goodbye Possums 🙏🙏🌹🇦🇺🥂 He’s straight as they come... Americans never understood the Aussie humour.
Donahue began his career in 1957 as a production assistant at KYW radio and television when that station was in Cleveland. He got a chance to become an announcer one day when the regular announcer failed to show up. After a brief stint as a bank check sorter in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he became program director for WABJ radio in Adrian, Michigan, soon after graduating.[8] He moved on to become a stringer for the CBS Evening News and later, an anchor of the morning newscast at WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio, where his interviews with Jimmy Hoffa and Billie Sol Estes were picked up nationally. While in Dayton, Donahue also hosted Conversation Piece, an afternoon phone-in talk show from 1963 to 1967 on WHIO radio. In Dayton, Donahue interviewed presidential candidate John F. Kennedy, late-night talk show host Johnny Carson,[9] human rights activist Malcolm X and Vietnam war opponents including Jerry Rubin.[10] In Chicago and New York City, Donahue interviewed Elton John,[11] heavyweight boxing champions Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier,[12] and author and political activist Noam Chomsk
Sometimes it just isnt right. Dame does her best, but @ 10:50 Phil ruined it. He subtly just had to be passive aggressive towards Dame Edna by statibg he'd never dress as a woman because he's such a man. Dame Edna knew what he was doing and did one comment back at him, but not as mean or ugky as Phil's comment. Phil seens aggressive in a passive polite way. He interrupts Dame Edna almost several times as she is tiring to answer audience questions. Actually i find Phil abrasive. Dame Edna was the funniest comedian who gave many laughter for yrs and yrs. Mr lynch is joining the rest us iin fun and laughter, who not only appreciates Dame Edna' but understands one has to see her as realistic with feelings. Phil is obnoxious and subtly rude to Dame Edna'. No other has been this way to her that I am aware of. The other issue for me was all the stars shows being promoted on a show that had Dame Edna as the guest. Why are all of them promoting themselves when this particular show should have been about Dame Edna. Phol, like a few unkind males, was slightly (and thats normally enough) threatened of his maleness. And fir absolutely NO goid reason.
That must have been insufferable for Dame Edna. Just the wrong format for her. But I suppose she had to put up with it in those early years as she began conquering the USA.
Yes, American humour is in your face. No subtlety or irony. My generation remembers Goldie Hawn getting a bucket or water poured over her. Is that humour?
Phil Donahue seems to have zero instinct as a straight man, definitely flubs the openings over and over again. He has no idea the whole thing, including him, is a series of one-liners and jokes. He's trying to do something like a real interview. He has no idea what to do with these characters.
It's interesting to watch the American homophobia seize up upon the Dame's entrance and gradually dissipate through the show. The power of humor - an idea wasted on genzee.
@@destineydevereux4722 you don’t have to apologize for being French. But I wonder why people hate me and insult me for commenting about Phil Donahue’s odd behavior. Calling a white woman a Karen is racist.
Lesson no1. Dame Edna is always in full control of every interview and never try to outsmart her or she'll destroy with 1 sentence
This interviewer is painful to watch, it's better to not talk too much and let Edna run the show!
I’m 😅p I’ll😅o op

Such a quick wit
An absolute unique treasure!! Edna the one & only! Never to be replaced!
Loved the Cher interview. She was such a great trooper. Went along with Edna the whole way.
Madge deserves an Oscar, Emmy something for the way she can keep a straight face no matter what happens around her.
Makes me wonder what a piece of shit Phil Donahue actually was!
What an ass clown!!
RIP, she will be dearly missed.

Menopause, by Dame Edna. Very courageous. I actually released my own scent moments ago!
I love the woman cackling at the mention of the name of the perfume!!!
Ah The Great Dame, who would we have been without her? 👍
Have seen this 7 times now, and I am never gonna be tired of her😂
Dame was quite beautiful on that broadcast
The most hilarious Dame on planet Earth!
Dame Edna, funny as always.....Phil actually seems a little threatened here. He seems determined not to lose control. LoL
This is gold! Phil, Edna and a cameo from Joan!
I just bought three Dame Edna stickers for my laptop and I can't wait to stick them on and find more Dame fans at work and in the coffee shop.
Smart way to find friends
Did you make any friends?
I watched the Donahue shows in Australia in the day. Loved his show. Always loved the Dame.
Take a look at @28:41 - Ethan Phillips doing a spot for Cheerios! This was around 2 years before Star Trek: Voyager premiered, where he played Neelix
"Don't look, Ethyl!" is a reference to the song "They Call it the Streak".

Phil Donahue was the best interviewer.... ever . Love Dame EDNA.
He was horrendous.
"Isn't that spooky"!! I love Edna
American TV is so frenetic it's exhausting to watch
Dame Edna did well to keep up with the mania

To Joan Rivers - 'Are any of your bridesmaids still alive?'😂
Some of those questions demonstrate how good the Dame is at short-circuiting the American mindset, resulting in some bizarre outbursts!
Donahue was wonderful
Rare Madge smile at 44:41
It's very different atmosphere from her UK shows
funny as usual ....laughed out loud many many times
Do you think they understand that Edna is supposed to be a little bit intolerant
Not this audience.
Of course
Only one person hasn’t aged in this interview.

Those commercials... 😬😬

I miss Phil Donahue
I loved his integrity. Too bad they kicked him off MSNBC for criticizing the war in Iraq. 😢
I miss thew Donahue Show
He was canceled despite good ratings due to having on guests that criticized the Iraq invasion at a time when no criticism was tolerated.
Madge is getting more attention than usual here!
Yes and what a beautiful testament to Phil Donahue's kindness, hospitality, and class.
Phil couldn't handle being totally outshone and upstaged by Dame Edna is trying unsuccessfully to undermine Dame Edna's superiority emphasizing Madge's presence at every turn!!!
That saxophone music reminds me of ditching school.
Phil did a pretty good job of accepting his co-pilot position when he handed the keys over to Dame Edna.
Donahue is not smart enough to handle Dame Edna!!!
Seems threathened.
If you could ask one question from Madonna, what would that be?- Why? 🤣

G'day, dahling. You don't speak for me. Been a fan of Edna for 30 years at least. Have her shows on DVD.
Wow ... $8,995 for a 4WD back then....
Times have changed indeed.... 😛
Donahue was always extremely liberal however he was good to his guests and was a good interviewer.
Donahue was pathetic to say the least, here
" however ."? What does that mean? Good for him that he was extremely liberal. Makes me like him even more.

I think this clip is banned in Florida!

Did anyone else spot the appearances of Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse way, way before they were famous?

Dame Edna as always a joy and Donahue the consummate professional.Madge bless her lol
It was a fun show, very much so. The audience warmed up to the spectacle wonderfully over the hour.

Not the best interview. Dame Edna's American audience a tad lukewarm to her type of humor.
Phil Donahue really had NO charisma. What a bore.

Narrow-minded Phil can't seem to disguise the fact that he really does not approve of the Dame Edna persona.
