- Опубликовано: 12 ноя 2024
- Welcome to this quick tutorial on how to update your Canon EOS R5 Firmware. This process will work for this new 1.1.0 firmware and all upcoming firmware for this camera. I don’t have an R6 but I assume this process also works for the Canon EOS R6 as well.
How to download and update your Canon R5 Firmware:
1- Set camera to P mode
2 - Download newest firmware
3 - Format SD card in camera
4 - Copy firmware to formatted card
5 - Put SD card into camera and install firmware
You can download the new firmware here: www.usa.canon....

For those of you wondering you don't need to download all the firmware updates to get your camera up to date. The newest firmware will have all the updates from in it.
What would you like to see Canon put into it's future firmware updates? Personally I want to see the cool down times reduced by at least 50% and the 30min record limit removed.
Thanks. You answered my question.
Thankyou this confused me as I have missed a couple.🙃
***MAC USERS*** If you are getting the message "Memory card containing firmware is required to update" when you try to install the update, double-click on the .dmg file, then in Finder, navigate to the download driver under your Locations (same place an SD card would show up), and then you will find the FIR file this brilliant man is talking about. Move ONLY the FIR file to the formatted SD card and go through the process described. Thank you Vasko! I was searching everywhere online to figure out what this issue was.
Thanks for the helpful comment.
THANK YOU!
This is undoubtedly the gold standard RUclips video on how to Update Firmware for Canon cameras and lenses. It is both concise and precise with real time video of how to download, unzip and transfer the firmware to the card and then to the camera. It is so easy to follow , thank you so much for taking the time to create this video and save me so much time, not to mention frustration.
You're very welcome. I tried to cover all the steps without any fluff and filler and keep things direct. I appreciate the feedback. Enjoy the new firmware on your camera.
I love the people who without waste any time going straight to the point .
Thanks. I don't like all that filler people put into videos too. I prefer people get to the point. Thanks for the comment.
I looked at 4 or 5 different videos before finding yours that ACTUALLY covers ALL the steps necessary to update the camera! BIG Thank you for being thorough, quick and to the point!
You're welcome. Glad you found the the video useful. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. If you're interested I started a new channel where I'm going to put more R5 tutorials if you're interested here is the link. ruclips.net/channel/UC_ZSPT4dZZ0OTr2S3Dw6FtA
Although this video is 3 years old I still come back to it every time there's a firmware update. It takes the stress out of performing a task you rarely need to do but want to do it right. Thanks!
Thank you for the comment really appreciate it. Glad the video is still helpful after all these years.
Thanks so much. Your tutorial was the BEST one on YT. No one else said to extract the file and only copy the FIR file to the SD card. No wonder I kept having issues. I appreciate your effort. Thanks again!!
You're welcome! Glad to help. I can't believe other people left out that important step. I mean how is the firmware supposed to get from the internet into your camera? Magic? lol. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Appreciate it.
Godz, thank you. Easy peasy no annoying commentary. I forget to set to "P" every single time! ARGH.
I know right. All that extra commentary is frustrating to me too. Tutorial videos need to get to the point. Appreciate the comment. Enjoy the new firmware.
I don't know how long ago this was posted, but this was the best tutorial yet. The other tutorials I watched left out that fri file which is the whole shabang here. Thanks for this.
Still appreciate the comment even if the video is older. I tried to make the tutorial detailed but to the point. Welcome to the channel. I have a ton of R5 content on here.
Yes! Thank you for this. This is the fastest and straight to the point tutorial on RUclips for updating the R5.
Thanks man really appreciate that. If I get the video to 8 minutes I can make more money with ads but at the same time I don't want to be that channel that fills videos with fluff to buy time. Thanks for the comment.
I would really like to thank you for the quick video on upgrading the firmware. I've had my camera for the better part of a year and finally decided to do the upgrade. It really helped to simplify the whole process. Thanks so much and can't wait to start using the new features.
You're welcome. Thank you for taking the time to write a thought out response. Appreciated. BTW if you're interested I'm working on a bunch more tips and tricks videos on the R5 so pop back in again sometime to watch the videos :) have a good one.
Thank you for creating this tutorial; it's been most helpful. My new 24" iMac no longer comes with a SD Card slot, so I'm trying to figure out how to achieve the same outcome without buying a SD Card Reader. Is it possible via the cable that comes with my Canon R5, I've tried but can't find the camera in the "Finder" Window? 🤷🏻♀
Yes you have to install the Canon utility app that came with your camera than you can plug the camera onto the computer and upgrade the firmware via the app. You can also install the firmware via Bluetooth using the Canon mobile app. I haven't tried the mobile app with the R5 yet but I know it works with newer cameras. Hope that helps.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and answer my question, I truly appreciate it. Now I'm off to update my firmware thanks to your video and answer. 👌🏻
This was perfect! Thank you so much for making a short simple video to understand! FYI I noticed that you have the format the card using your camera. I formated the card just with my mac but it didn't work. But once i formatted it using the camera it worked fine.
Glad it was helpful and thank you for the heads up on formatting the card with your MAC. I'll post that in the next video I make. When you format the card with the camera it creates folders in the card that your camera reads. When you format on your computer it wipes the card clean. I'm guessing that's the reason. Appreciate the comment and welcome to the channel if it's your first time here.
Thank you so much for this video. As I am very technically challenged. What others take for granted is overwhelming for me. This was a very valuable video for me. I can't thank you enough.
You're welcome thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I'm glad the video was helpful for you. I tried to make it as simple and direct as possible. Enjoy the new firmware update.
@@vaskoobscura_ I'm with the person above, tech challenged. YOU made this simple easy and quick. Thank you!

Hey thanks for the comment. Enjoy the new firmware.
Awesome vid. No screwing around. Worth the time.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you like liked it getting right to the point.
I was worried about updating my my R5 but this make me feel super comfortable about doing it now .
Awesome. Glad the video was useful to you. I remember the first time I updated firmware on a camera it was a bit stressful i know the feeling. After watching this i'm sure you'll have no problem at all updating your camera. Cheers and thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Wasted no time and straight to the point. Liked & subscribed!
Thank you appreciate the comment and the subscription. Thank you. As a subscriber if you have any questions about the EOS R5 let me know and I'll make a video talking about it :) Enjoy your updated camera.
Thank you for your video! This helps a lot! I updated my R5, this video is in detail but pretty straight forward! Good job!
Thank you appreciate the comment. I tried to keep it short and to the point. :) I have a lot more R5 content on the channel if that's what you're into. Happy holidays.
@@vaskoobscura_ that’s why viewers prefer short and straight-forward videos! Awesome job!
Thanks for doing this video. Can I do this firmware update with or without a lens connected? Thank You
You're welcome. I have never tried it but I don't see why you would not be able to do a firmware update with no lens attached to the camera.
For the Mac users: You need to open the .DMG file and drop the .FIR file to the root of the formatted card.
.Dmg is basically the container for files just like a .zip you still have to extract it. But thanks for the heads up. If I make another video I'll mention that.
Thank you so much. I was so confused on why it wasn’t working when I put the dmg file on the sd card. Your comment saved me
Hi John, when I "open" the .dmg file nothing happens (I've tried double-clicking as well as Open from the menu) any tips??
I can’t seem to get to the FIR file 😮I have a Mac studio
where would i find a DMG file ?
Great video and easy to follow. One tip for future updates like this is to slow down how fast you are speaking. I had to pause multiple times to keep up with how fast you were going through the menus. Overall, great job!
Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate the constructive opinions. Glad the video was helpful for you. I also put chapters in the description so people can jump to the section they wanted but I guess if you're watching on a phone it's a but tough to get down to the description while watching.
Thank you so much....I called Canon and they didn't help me.....you rock!!
No worries! Glad you enjoyed the vide and have fun with your new firmware.
Just updated my R5 and R6, this was a great step by step video.
Thanks for the comment I'm happy that you found the video useful. Enjoy your updated cameras.
Some people and previous canon update instructions say to remove the lens. When did that change?
To remove the lens? I've never heard of that before and i've never done an update without a lens. This is the first i'm hearing of it. I'll go google it and see what comes up.
Thanks! There have been a couple changes to the menu system since this first came out, but overall this helped :)
Its nice to see Canon making updates to the system. Hopefully they continue to make improvements. Appreciate the comment.
Nice quick to the point well done.
Thank you for the comment. Glad you liked the video.

awesome.. quick and clean.. thankyou for not waffling...

Thank you very much. You're a good teacher.
You're welcome. I'm glad you found the video useful.
Great video !! Does the firmware update erase/ alter your settings ?
Thank you for the comment. No it does not erase your settings. But if you are worried about your settings being rest the cool thing with the R5 is that you can save your user settings to a memory card and restore them onto any other R5 or back to your own camera. You can always do that for peace of mind. :)
Very helpful video! I have a question
Can l do the firmware update whit the lens attached or should I remove it?
Thanks!
Hi there thanks for the comment. I don't see any reason why you would need to remove the lens to do the firmware. The update menu will ask you if you want to update the lens or the camera just select the camera option. Good luck with your update.
@@vaskoobscura_ thank you!!

Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated. Goes a long way to help out my channel. Glad you enjoyed the no fluff tutorial.
is there a way to do this without having a card reader for my computer? IE - can I transfer the file to the card while it is in the camera?
You know what I'm not sure I've never done that before. But I feel like if you can get the farmwear onto the card even if it's in the camera it should work because you have to initiate the firmware update process. Let me know how it foes for you.
Do you need to do this each time you use a new memory card or does it update the entire camera once you do this on the first memory card?
Thanks for the question. Once you update the firmware on the camera it's done. You can format the memory card and use it as normal.
The "OK" button will be "grayed out" until you use the right rotation (on the central control ring ) to index right. You should then be able to hit "SET" to start loading the firmware into the camera's operating memory. This is Canon's way of being sure you REALLY want to load new software into your camera. Funny no one mentions it...
Hey thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video. I assume people just assume people will figure it out but if you're not expecting it you might think something was wrong with your camera.
Thank you, will definitely check it out!
Thank you for the comment.
Hey there BTS Vasko guy. I have a question for you. I was working on upgrading my firmware on my R5 but as I went to format my (number 2) SD card in the camera it says "no card1 in camera". I can't seem to figure out why it is not letting me format the card 2 as it is lit up. Can you help me out here? Thank you very much.
Hey. Is the card locked? SD cards have that little switch that locks them and prevents you from doing anything with them. If that isn't the case than maybe try formatting the card on your computer then on the camera. Or final option try a different card. Hope that helps.
Best tutorial on the subject, I watched like 3.
Oh well thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you enjoy your updated R5. Rumor has it a new firmware is coming soon. I'm excited to see what the new upgrade will bring.

thank you ! I find two updates to be downloaded.... do i use your procedure on both, or only on the newest? ( i mean to ask: does the newest update contain the previous too?) Thank you...
Thanks for the comment. You only need the newest update. The newest update should include all the previous updates in it.
Thank you!! this was so helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it.
this saved me hahaha the bloody canon instructions did not help me at all lol
thank you so simple
Thanks glad the video was helpful for you. It's such an easy process but the instructions are so convoluted.
Does updating the firmware reset all personal settings?
Your settings will stay as they are when you do the update. I don't recall anything changing back to factory defaults after updating the firmware. But if you are worried about it the R5 allows you to save your settings to a memory card than import them back onto your camera or any other R5. Open the menu and go to the wrench icon, tab 5 and you'll see "save load cam settings on card" :)
Excellent vide. Thank you!!!!
Glad you liked it! You're welcome and thank you for the comment.

Wow! Very helpful.
Why mode P when updating? Mine was on Av. Is there any difference?
I honestly have no idea why they say it should be in P mode and I've never heard of there being a difference if you have your camera in another mode. I always assumed it was some sort of software thing.
Could you give me a link to Canon instruction where it says it has to be on P? Thank you.
There is a link in the video description that leads right to the page with the firmware and the installation info.
can you do this without a card reader? I found that using a USB cable wont work as the file can not be coppied from the PC to the storage
You should be able to do it with a USB cable if you use the Canon Utility program. I'm not sure if the R5 has this feature or not but I know that on the newer cameras you can do the firmware updates via the Canon phone app. Maybe that is something you can try.
I followed all the steps and received the following error: Update file error. Please check the memory card and reload the battery and try again.
Could this be because I attempted when my cameras battery was at 22% or what? Thanks, great vid
I have not run into that error before. Canon does recommend that the battery is fully charged before you do an update. That could be your issue. If that doesn't work I would delete the firmware and redownload it.
Can I immediately update from 1.2.0 to 1.3.1 version?
Yes the newest firmware has all the previous updates in it. :)
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you!
Thank you very much
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks for the comment. Hope you are enjoying your firmware update.
My SD card won’t allow me to transfer the .FIR file. I’m not sure how to get it on there?
hmmmm. That's really strange. I'm assuming you already formatted the SD card. Is your SD card locked? There is a lock switch on the side of all SD cards. Maybe you have that flipped on. Also you could try a different SD card if you have more than one.
I know there is a way to update the cameras via USB connection through the Canon EOS Utility program. I've never done it that way but I'm sure there is a tutorial about that out there if your SD cards won't work. Hope that helps.
Legendary. Thanks so much.
You're welcome! I appreciate the comment.
Hi bro what todo when it says memory card firmware is required to update
Thanks for the comment. Memory card firmware is required. I've never heard that before. I assume you've downloaded the correct firmware, unzipped it and uploaded it onto a newly formatted memory card? If you don't follow all the steps correctly the camera might not recognize the new firmware.
hey @hv3visual - not sure if you are still running into this, but it was happening to me b/c I wasn't putting the camera in P Mode before starting the process.
@@PaijeBreaks I did it worked appreciate it
Would this be the same way for the canon m6 markII ?
Yes. You can use this method for all of Canon's cameras.
Thanks and great video !
Thanks for this tips !
You bet! Glad to help.
What does the mode need to be in P mode???
Not sure to be honest with you. But if I had to guess I would think A) to make sure you are in photo mode and B) to make sure you are not in fully automatic mode because that mode doesn't have the same menu options.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you,
Really helpful video thanks! And I have to ask, is that your real name? Because if it is that’s the most badass name I’ve ever heard!
Thanks man glad you found the video helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to make the comment. Just left a comment and subed to your channel. Always fun to meet a fellow photographer especially one who knows the history of photography. The first name is real the last name i'll leave to your imagination ;)
how do i do this for mac? it won’t let me put the firmware in my SD card
hmmmm. Do you have a program to unzip the the file on your mac? You have to unzip the file to get the firmware out and then you put it on the card. Maybe your SD card is locked in which case you'll have to flip that little witch on the side to unlock it. Can't think of any other reason why you would not be able to transfer the firmware to your card.
Another thing you can do is ask a friend to unzip the file and send it to you.
There is also another way to update the camera using the Canon Utility software. I've never done it but I believe you install the software than attach your camera to your mac via USB then go into the software and find the firmware update options.
Hope that helps.
Thank you for you help
You're very welcome. Happy to help.
I can’t figure out how to update with my iPad Pro.
I'm not sure about that I don't have an iPad to test it out. From what I remember you can't use win zip or win rar to extract files on an iPad so you might be stuck. You'll probably have to ask a friend with a computer to download and extract the file then send it to you. Than you can transfer it to an SD card and update your camera.
I'm following how to upgrade firmware on my R5 and after it downloads, there is no zip file showing and no place that offers the option of "extract all". So I'm stuck
Maybe you have a security feature enabled on your computer preventing you from downloading the file? This sounds like it's a computer issue. Maybe you can use another computer to get the download and put the zip file onto a memory card.
I have an r5 and have never download any of the firmware updates. Now that I am ready to do it. Do I have to load them all, or can Just download the latest update.
All you need is the newest update and you're all caught up. Everything is in there. Enjoy all the new features.
Very well done sir :)
Thank you appreciated. Welcome to the channel. I have a ton more helpful R5 content on the channel if you’re interested.
What if your progress bar just sits there at 0% forever and ever? It says don't turn off camera or touch any buttons but... damn. Now what? Just let it run out of juice?
hmmmmm. What was your battery life at? I think the camera wants the battery to be mostly charged before it does the update. That would be my guess. I've never heard about this issue before. The update only takes about 6 minutes to install. Maybe wait 20 min to be sure and then restart your camera and see if the update installed. If not I would contact Canon directly to see what can be done. Hope that helps. Good luck with your update.
@@vaskoobscura_ It finally updated after about 15 minutes. Yikes! Seems to be working perfectly though. Thanks for the response.

You're most welcome. Thank you for the comment.
Thanks bro!
You"re welcome.
Thanks!!
You're welcome
My computer wont allow the extraction of the zip file. I have a Dell.
If you right clicked on the zip file and there is no option to "extract" you probably don't have a program installed hat can extract the zip. There are two programs you can download that would be able to extract the zip file. one is called winzip and the other is called 7zip. If you google them you should be able to find a webpage where you can download them on your computer. Than you'll be able to unzip the file.
Option two is you could get a friend to download and unzip the file for you. Hope that helps.
