Traditional Grip Explained

- Many people ask daily about how to use traditional grip. Hopefully this will explain the fundamentals of it. It isn’t really that difficult if you start with my directions and take it step by step. Always practice things you don’t know how to do.

I'm still working on getting my pointer finger to go with the action of the stick vertically, at the moment my pointer finger is making the stick go sideways, I think I have crazy minded fingers, especially on my left hand!!??

Ok I've been drumming for a few years now and getting interested in playing jazz so exploring this grip. I've been trying for weeks to get this right and could not do it. Watching this video, I dropped my stick, picked it up in my right hand, and figured I would try it in that hand. I did it with no issues at all to the point where the speed and control I was generating was shocking. I spent the past 20 minutes setting up my kit left handed, and ....... apparently I'm a left handed drummer that has a fairly decent traditional grip now 😂
The thing is, if you are right handed and never played ‘traditional’ of course the right hand will seem easier at first. But traditional is with the left hand traditionally. 😊. You would never see a marching snare line with one person using it with right hand. It would be totally backwards. In other words it doesn’t matter what hand you are, traditional is supposed to be with the left hand. I know there are a few drummers that play backwards but I’ve been teaching drumlines since 1969 and we don’t even talk about if they are left handed or not. When you are first working on ‘traditional’ it will be awkward but with practice like I show in the video, it will come. If you aren’t normally left handed, you now will have to start all your fills around the kit with your left hand which should feel awkward to you if you’ve been playing them right handed.
@@dtdrummerlady This makes sense. I'm actually ambidextrous. A similar thing happened when I was a kid and played golf. I only had right handed clubs but got left handed and it was much better. I write left handed, throw a ball and bat right handed and can actually interchange
My grandson plays drums, guitar, writes and piano (😊) right handed but tennis and ball left handed.

Traditional grip is only used on the left hand. Think about a marching drum hanging on a sling. The drummers back then during the Rev war adapted the left hand traditional. If there was someone hanging their drum backwards as they marched it wouldn’t be uniform. All Drum Corps use traditional grip (left hand)😊

When are you trad lovers going to get real and admit the grip is a very limited on drum set grip?
This is probably true for the typical drummer & in various contexts… yet Buddy Rich played things on a kit most EXCELLENT drummers admire & aspire to play (of course with traditional grip). I switched to matched grip as a kid in the 70’s bc that was cool then. We were breaking the rules lol. But get back to me later with more technique comments, after posting a video showing the same power speed & control as Buddy, & we will all be happy to like & subscribe.
