I want to see him talk to ivar, if not fight him. I know Ivar hates to loose even more than he hates being pitied or laughed at, but I think he had some respect for Alfred beating him in that chess game, and he definitely hasn't forgotten being given that chess piece, he looked to somewhat touched and mostly confused to forget that random act of kindness and respect.

Ivar also went to Ireland, but Ireland looks too much like England for
'variety'. IMO. But Ivar died in either Ireland or England.
They should have had Bjorn go all the way to Constantinople if they wanted real variety that had some basis in historical authenticity, and have a plot about the beginning of the Varangian Guard. The Rus' plot didn't go anywhere.

One thing I think both Vikings and the last kingdom did wrong was they made the opposing side seem weak.
The Vikings and the Anglo Saxons were a very formidable people. Vikings make the saxons seem like little more than blood bags most of the show while the last kingdom make the Vikings seem like absolute morons fueled by their emotions.
While the two may not have liked each other I like to think both peoples had a deep respect for each other, not as friends but as enemies.

They were even strictly speaking the same people. The Saxons migrated from southern Denmark, the Jutes from Denmark proper and the Anglos from the same area after the fall of Rome to form the "English" Saxon people who ruled there until the Norman invasion. They were both originally of the same Germanic ethnicity. King Alfred by all sources is even reported to have been blonde haired and heavy of beard, looking quite like a Norseman himself. What seperated them most distinctly was their faith. And as you all say, Saxons were not useless in battle, they were fierce warriors whose military structure and equipment even largely mirrored viking ones, and they won countless battles against Vikings. The biggest annoyance for me was in how they also portrayed saxon armor, with those abysmally ugly lamellar chests and the 16th century cavalry helmets. Couldn't be more ahistorical.

I didn't sense any fear in the first throw, but only confusion in Alfred's eyes. He could've called for the guards or even ran for it. Instead he stood his ground. There's a warrior in Alfred. Ubbe will help him bring him out.
