I’ve heard a few variations on this story. My favorite is the one where the Farmer demands of the Devil “what will you give me to take her back in?” “All I can offer are the wages of sin.” “I’ll take her back Devil. ruclips.net/video/ggj2QfKONPw/видео.html LOL Starts out with the drums from Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson, but yeah....same tune. Guess quite a few songs would have migrated over here from Ireland.
In the hospital with covid in an unfinished basement makeshift room for ICU listening to this song is put a little fight in me I need...I'll be back old Farmer❤🤠
I really like the sound of this banjo. It has a front porch lazy afternoon sound. Well that what I was thinkin anyway. lol Oh, and the wood on that banjo is beautiful.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo WOW! That is impressive. I noticed in another video you flipped that banjo over and kind of showed it off. The workmanship was wonderful. It looked like a hand rubbed finish.
This song here ain’t meant for Solitude in the Mountains, this song right ‘ere is meant for a couple of buddies, with a few beers by the fire singin’ along. Keep the music flowing!
Oh how you do take me back to my childhood. I grew up listening to pretty much everything you sing/play. It makes me smile hearing those things again. I think it also amazes my husband because he listens to you as well and I can just pick right up and sing along. Keep up the old traditions darlin. Don’t let people forgot. 😊
I also happen to listen to a lot old traditional Irish music with me being Irish and all and you can just tell by the lyrics in this tune that it has Irish influences
Love the old songs mr hicks. I love old folk songs and thought you did an awesome job. Thank you. The old songs remind me of growing up in north Carolina. We lived less than an 2 hours from the Atlantic. I'd lay down on a moss covered tree hanging over the pond ( to cool off). And I'd sing to the dangonflies and frogs. Sweet memories of a hot summer day. Thank you.
Not much a proponent of boobtube but this mans music brings me great joy. I have my family together getting ready for sup. Kids barefoot in the pasture playing. Music in the background. Like a scene out of oh brother where art thou. You have a gift you’ve worked hard to cultivate. All my sons are musicians in the making. Appreciate your efforts partner.
I'm leaving lyrics here since I couldn't find these exact ones and I really like them. Also for personal reference, I've learned the song on the banjo but the whole lyrics are spotty. There was an old man livin' under the hill, If he ain't dead yet he's a livin' there still (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Hitched up his mule and went out to plow, just how he got around I'll never know how (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Well the devil came up and he met him at the gate, said "one of your family I'm bound to take (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day The old man cried I am undone, he's here to take my oldest son (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day No it ain't your son or your daughter I crave, but you old thorny woman it's her I'll have (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Take her off Mr. Devil with the joy of my heart, and I hope to god you never will part (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Well The Devil took her up in an old tote sack, he looked like a camel with a hump on his back (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day The devil got as far as the hump in the road, sayin'" get off old woman, you're a hell of a load" (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day When they got down to the gate of hell he said fire it up boys scorch her well (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Along come a little devil draggin' a chain, she picked up a hatchet and she knocked out his brain (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Another little devil was climbin' on the wall, she upped with her foot and she kicked him in the fire (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day The third little devil was hangin' on the wall, said "take her back Pap, 'fore she kills us all!" (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day What shall I do with her I cannot tell, She ain't fit for heaven and she won't do for hell (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day One day the old man was peepin' through the crack when he saw the old devil come-a humpin' her back (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day Well here's your wife she's sound and well, I'll tell you what's more she done tore up hell (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day One day the old man was sick in bed, she picked up a shovel and she shoveled his head (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day The old man cried I sure am cursed, she went down to hell and she come up worse (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Diddle- Eye-Diddle-Eye Day So the old man lit of through the hills, said "The devil won't have her, be damned if I will" (Singin') Fie--Diddle-Eye-Diddle eye, Fie. Wow. God bless Florida pot for getting me here. This dude gets my ex wife. I’ve now spent a couple hours, more than too many microwaved Reece’s pieces popcorn watching all of his videos. Keep up the good work and just don’t tell anyone back home up North that I’m listening to banjo music on purpose.
Fantastic performance! My favorite song on the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk music and there are so many great song in that collection! Sounds so great Clifton!
Hello from Ireland Mr Hicks, I'm loving the little birdie walk through really helpful full, Thank you. I've played a bit of guitar and am now putting me hand to banjo, I'm finding it hard to claw hammer and drop thumb, I post a 2 minute video on my channel of a quick diddle, I'm not not after likes or subs, but if you can spare the time may i ask for feed back on how to make it sound more like a banjo?
I have several videos on banjo building. A quick search of my channel here will pull them up. I recommend Smakula.com for vintage banjos. If you want a new banjo check out Jeff Menzies in Jamaica, or County Banjo Company in Canada.

Love your banjo awesome
If there's one man I want around my campfire its Clifton Hicks
Mr Hicks is the banjo man of our generation. Bringin the old tunes back to the people, cheers from North Carolina
Yessir, he reached a cold, cold, dead heart as mine. Blessings from Missouri brother, swm!😮😮😮

I like the version that says "I've been the Devil for most of my life, but I never knew Hell 'till I encountered your wife."
I haven't. (Heard variations of this song) Please, be kind and send it to me. I'd appreciate it and would love it
Please
“Another little devil come climbin up the wall,
She upped with her foot and kicked ‘im in the...Fire.” Lolol!! ❤️
Very much do. Like. This.
I like listening to Clifton Hicks/Old Leather Stocking when I'm out in the Bush working on my camp
The Irish folk song Killeburn brae is the same story as this one sung here. Give it a listen folks! Classic

Daddy would play his banjo and sing on the porch and I would be wide eyed. Brings back memories. Thank you.
I really like the sound of this banjo. It has a front porch lazy afternoon sound. Well that what I was thinkin anyway. lol Oh, and the wood on that banjo is beautiful.

I can imagine the argument that led to the penning of this song.

i first heard this song via the Heather Alexander version. :D

Can relate to it with my wife!
BWAHAHAHAHA!!! Me too but I still love her dearly...God help us both!!!😂
Again, wash tub string bass. Epic. This doesn't need the concertina nor accordion.
Can't wait until the remixes!
I'm having one of your tunes at my funeral
his music opens a portal door too an alien world.

Appalachian music in general. Also, the lilting, and just the witticism I will say. Slainte.
I can remember that tune from long ago, but the words were a lot tamer. It was an old Scottish tune, I recall. Excellent sir.
I believe twas Scottish and Irish both at once. They come from the same tree Celtic branch. They share similar stories, music, and wit. Slainte.
*branch of the Celtic tree
Screw you fellas for forgotten the Cornish! 😁
