Gitaroo Man is a rhythm game where the main character U-1 battles people in musical battle. Uses original music from the japanese band COIL. Most of the music is part of battles, but from what I've heard, The Legendary Theme is the one song that isn't actually used to "attack" or "damage" an opponent. So it's a song for peace.
Yeah this theme comes up twice in the game. The first instance is an acoustic version the main character plays to woo a girl he meets on another planet who looks like his crush back on earth. The one you listened here, Jesse, is the "Album" version, which plays...well I won't spoil it but it's a wonderful moment and sealed Gitaroo Man as like my #4 favorite game of all time.
This was such a bizarre rhythm game (released on the PS2 originally in 2001 in Japan, and released in the West in 2002), but the music slapped so hard that I'm surprised it didn't get any additional rereleases beyond the PSP port in 2006. Alas, it was produced in very low qualities by Koei as far as the Western versions go, so finding a physical copy these days is incredibly difficult if you're not willing to shell out the moolah. And you would definitely be right on this being a pivotal story moment: this is the penultimate song that plays right before the final boss.
Gitaroo Man! Ooooh yeah! So in Gitaroo Man a kid named U-1 learns he is in fact the legendary hero of the distant Planet Gitaroo, Gitaroo Man. About halfway through the game he meets a girl named Kira, and as U-1 plays an acoustic version of this for her. Later in the game she is revealed as the strongest warrior serving the dictator of Planet Gitaroo, Zowie, and as Gitaroo Man you play this version of the theme to convince her to team up with you to stand against him (which is why a second guitar joins in later).
I love this game. It is a weird Japanese rhythm game with a bonkers story where you have to have guitar battles and your amp is your dog. It is different than just the usual hit the buttons in time mechanic, but you also have to rotate the analogue stick to bend the notes and stay on the constantly moving path while hitting the notes. One of my favourite stages is the Sanone trio where you fight 3 mariachi skeletons just after losing your powers.
One of the most fun things about this game was how, depending on your performance during each stage, some parts can appear in different orders or not at all. The skeleton stage stands out in my mind as one of the more amusing pieces in the game
I think it's a little obvious that this is one of my favorite games ever, this song is fantastic and I was honestly thinking about donating to have you check this out seeing as it's a cult classic game I love. I'm glad to see someone else had the same idea and rep'd the game! I really hope you check out other songs as every boss is basically a different genre of music with a guitar dueling another instrument. My recommendations are "Born To Be Bone", " 'Bee' Jam Blues", and "Resurrection".

There's a jazzy funk battle against a guy in a bee suit, a ska battle against robot skeletons, a bonus co-op battle in the PSP version against a rapping giant robot, yeah its a wild time. Best thing about it is that it doesnt overstay its welcome. Its about 2/3 hours long TOPS, and leaves you very satisfied. Big recommend.

It's heard throughout the game at various points and there's an acoustic version you play through. The story of the game is absolutely bonkers but has absolutely banger tracks and all are unique genres of music. I also forgot to mention it's a rhythm game so you play this song yourself

I suck at rhythm games, I own this game but cannot beat it even on easy. Yet I do not regret owning it because I love the music so much that I'm happy just to have supported it. You reacting to this song has made my day and I hope you get the chance to hear some of the other tracks from it.
I'm not a deep rocker myself, but I do enjoy music a lot - usually I go for electronic or classical. I'm very happy this game gets recognized by music people out there. When I was younger I played it on a whim but the music kept in my mind year after year. I never forgot it and now I search for it on YT once in a while and find this kind of video. :) Cheers to this post and everyone listening in.
The legendary theme as been my wake-up alarm song for the past ten years, I usually am awake by the 5sec mark but end up listening to it fully almost every time !
It's played by a real band called Coil. The music had to be specially arranged for the game play to work. It's basically a VS battle with another musician and you play the Guitar notes, and the opponent usually plays a different instrument. This is like a cool down track at the end of the game just to convey the message that even a simple melody can win. The rest of the tracks are a lot more intense.
Oh man Gitaroo Man has SUCH GOOD MUSIC. I played it so much on the PS2 cuz I loved the songs, I really hope more people recommend the other songs to listen too as they are all great (especially the invasion song) but man could it get very particular with the strumming and thumbstick placement xD
Back in 2002. Our band play this song in promp night before we grsduate from senior high school. No one knows this song (of course 😂) but surprisingly every body start light n holding hand together. At the end of the song everybody is applause. What a magic night. After that we dismiss our band and pursue our own dream. Now we have a child, and want to reunited again just to play this song 😢

It's kind of a love song, I suppose that you play to both battle and save a loved one... and when this kicks in it's already pretty clear your opponent has no chance. And the 2nd guitar signifies the opponent joining up.

Looking at the katakana in the image, gitaru is how "guitar" is said in Japanese and-since it was the early 2000s when it was first localized and there seemingly wasn't a standard way of Romanizing it I noticed as a kid-it was written as Guitaroo. I'm sure part of it was just because having a game called simply Guitar Man wasn't interesting, but the game is pretty goofy so it fits that too. I don't remember the story, but there are a good number of songs that I listened to quite a lot. Tainted Lovers is probably the one I've listened to the most, but I think it really is elevated when it has the enemy voice lines for it.
I played this as a very young teen on the PSP, but only the pirated version. It was so good. I actually still have that same PSP to this day. Maybe I'll try to find an actual copy of this game now.
