An excellent travel book, one of the best I've read. I live for writers like Thubron, who trammel the lesser-known corners of the world and write perceptively and insightfully about it.

Amazing. As a young Japanese dreaming about the world, I just happened to pick up one of his books on Central Asia. And his writing just captured my imagination. Then I read one more of his books. That was 25 years ago. Life got in the way…then last month, I stumbled upon his name again, ‘RUclipsd’ him and learned he’s still writing. The Amur…life has come a full circle for me, and I’m reading this book by Thubron. Fully immersed in the view of the world he described. What an amazing writer. The interviews really shows what a humble, warm, humorous person he is.

Terrific book. A great achievement at any age, but at 80 mind-blowing and inspirational.
