I've tried to just listen to this with my eyes closed, but I've found that the visual experience is just as entrancing. I can't figure it out. I think this instrument is by far my favorite instrument, that I don't own. I've been googling makers all day. looks like I'm going to be on a waiting list. also I think saraz hang drums sound the best. "my opinion", what does anyone else say in that matter?

I've been in love with this instrument since I first heard it 5 years ago. There's just something about the vibrations that make me become one with the sound it produces. It almost feels like an out of body experience. But I agree with you. She has a very nice tone to her drum and her playing is heavenly. However, Dante Bucci was the man who got me hooked. Check him out if you haven't heard his stuff.

She is very passionate slapping the handpan! Her fingering technique is excellently executed! I see the ecstasy in her face as she glides her fingers over her instrument! This shows the difference between an Musician/Artist and someone that can play an instrument! People that can play an instrument can achieve a technical level of excellence but a musician/artist goes way beyond, it becomes sensual and very very personal to ALL of whom stop to listen! Thanx Yuki!

swampmarcher You can often send them to the original makers to be tuned. In other video of her playing this it sounds much more in tune.

One or two have a nasty ring and compared to this version from the beach, it does sound off. I'm no musician so maybe these instruments have their flaws due to the way they're made. Still a beautiful tune and great instrument though.

agree, this instrument line often sounds out of tune while the other brands seem to hold it much longer

The hang drum is one of those fascinating instruments that had me turning my Tibetan singing bowls ( 7 holy metal) upside down and trying to pull something close the atmosphere of the hang drum but the dexterity of motion is such that Yuki is able to almost bend the notes in the air as they blend together into a melody. I was discussing handspan, hang drum, convex drums yesterday actually, and I have been listening to what I believe is an evolution of the sound from Romania to Japan and also over to Scotland and Ireland in the way pipes and drums escalate into a sound not linear but as formed above the players. This is also becoming more evident to me in the music of Wardruna, in particular Ivar and how his voice and the kind of lute, the name of which now escapes me as I have been playing piano with one hand while tapping the call and response sound with my other hand on the back of a large. thick metal Tibetan bowl. The allusions to steel drum are easy and obvious but the steel drum sound is more direct from the drum to the ear, not as being formed above the players or player in the air above them. Imagine Beethoven's Late Quartets if they were played in a sound proof studio glass and egg carton cardboard booth. The sound would be dead. It would not have that reaching for God that was so prevalent in the last sets of music Beethoven was composing. I am not saying the handspan, hang drum, pipes and drum, tadu or taiko drums and woodblocks are Beethoven, but the effect of a transcendent sound is evident in the music as a whole. I have lost found so many days exploring these sounds that I feel like a 1930s and 1940s found music musicologist circumnavigating the world upon the Monkey God Cloud or the Cloud of Christ as he rode up to Heaven gathering music instead of souls. No teleological argument here, which is a subject much too deep for my purpose in searching for how to bring this sound to my piano. This is what is driving my musical engine right now. How to bring the hand pan drum and/or taiko drum, pipe and drum sound with their eloquence as almost a danger to music moreso than the amazing noise rock from the greatness that is Boris. I think Boris and Color Haze, and of course Electric Moon and Bardo Pond do it in each of their own post rock ways, the same as the Norwegian folk music scene is exploding now upon the beat of Scotland the Brave. Tibetan Singing Bowls achieve this in ways designed precisely to create healing and transcendence. It is wasteful to bring 18 bowls and chimes in at once, no, this upside down spinning top sound is so slow and can be brought in at such deep frequencies that you can feel the air changing above them as three or four bowls are being played with one as the continuous bass line breathing across the other two bowls as you tap or tap and then circle the sides with a proper cloth and wood mallet to create a sound that heals precise parts of the body/chakra points as you slowly breath until your breath is on the same spiral as the bowls. It is an amazing moment in musical healing, prayer, yoga, and songs to God. The hand pan, hang drum, space drum, tongue drum is new to me so my interest and excitement is probably equal to the reaction our ancestors had the first time they heard a hurdy gurdy. "YIKES! I must learn more about this sound of Heaven, Earth, the Oceans breathing through this thing." So, dig. My fingertips hurt from trying to play the upside down Tibetan bowl held under my arm as I finger tap it. Tried elevating a few on their cloth rings and pillows but the sound was not right. SO, thank you Yuki Koshimoto for turning me onto this sound quite by accident as I was listening to pipe and drum corps music from the highlands and you kept showing up in the sidebar so I HAD to listen. I am glad. Again, thank you.

The jet/airplane overhead around the 3:12 mark just adds to the beauty. Even if it's supposed to be in the wilderness, and about nature it has that small piece of humanity with the sound fx of the jet above. I thought it was cool.

I am a free style beginner didgeridoo player. Just ordered my Thomann Corkscrew Didgeridoo yesterday. Just blow the didge when I feel the need to play it and I can use it for voice training too. But the Hang or SpaceDrum (Nice name) is really relaxing. I guess playing it, it must relax you also very deep. Just guessing. Wonderful to hear. Bravo, I love it.
