"It is NOT...in the FILE! It is NOT!" Straight flashbacks to my angry Irish grandfather screaming at me as a kid lol, George C. Scott is amazing in this movie
0:46. George looks like he's busting out in tears through the pain and stress he's going through to solve the crime. Top notch acting of a man at his breaking point.
George C Scott was blessed. Just a perfect volcano of rage, as Tarantino put it. Everything down to his expressive face, the gravel of his voice, and his ability to erupt at the drop of a pin. So many actors will foam at the mouth and scream their head off, but when you saw Scott raging in pain and frustration, it was honest. Any role he was cast in, was definitive. He's my favorite Scrooge, and I cannot read about Patton without seeing Scott's performance.
I get from Scott’s portrayal of the character he’s at breaking point with what he’s dealing with, he knows what’s going on but it’s what he feared he’s privy to what happened in the first film, but has spent 15 years doubting the supernatural aspect, and suddenly that’s the only explanation to what’s now happening, the death of a young boy, a priest and then followed by his friend, he’s under strain and is almost refusing to accept what he knows and fears, he wants to justify the facts as grounded, and it’s causing him to come apart.
This movie was very ahead of its time. Kinderman and Father Dyer especially had a natural rapport, you would believe they really were old friends. Wonderful dialogue.
George C. Scott really did a good job. It's also amazing that this movie came out the same year as the Disney animated film, The Rescuers Down Under, where George C. Scott also played the villain, Percival C. McLeach in the same film. He even look like McLeach, and when he yells in these scenes, I can't help but picture McLeach.
He's not the villain in The Exorcist III, it's just that his mother in law came over for the holidays and she brought a carp to prepare for dinner and now there's a carp swimming in his bathtub and he hates it. 😭
People critisizing his acting don't realize why he is the way he is. Over stressed and everything is really effecting him for obvious reaaon..especially the death of his buddy.
I really believe Scott must have been dealing with something difficult in his life during this shoot - I mean, his reaction at 0:46 is just disturbingly genuine. Want to give the poor guy a hug, geesh. I love him in everything he's ever been in but know little about the man - anyone here read any auto-bios/bios about him, per Wikipedia this was "shot on location in Georgetown for eight weeks in mid-1989"? I can't find anything about him, just the recent focus on the director's cut.
Every time I hear Mr Scott’s voice I can imagine hearing cartoonish lizard screeches alongside. The Rescuers Down Under was what introduced me to Mr Scott when my sisters and I were little.
@smithsj227 , Anthony Hopkins is great as Hannibal Lector. I know he wasn't the first choice for Lector. Still, I would have loved to have seen George C. Scott as Hannibal Lector, it would have been legendary.
0:33 imagine your best friend sitting in their hospital bed, and suddenly, you get a call to come to their room. What's left of them... what's left of them. A tarp holds them down, but when you look under it's disgustingly clean, meticulously clean wrapping of your best friend's remains. And to the side, jars full of their blood. Then imagine seeing the calling card of your worst enemy, your worst nightmare, plastered on the wall, plain as day for you to see. It's been known to the world but was thought to have been gone for years. Now imagine having to convince 2 authority figures why they should believe that your fear has returned.

George C Scott was from the old school of actors. When it called for power he brought it. Adding Brad Dourif to the cast was also a brilliant choice, as he went balls-out in this film and displayed his finest acting of his career bar none. Jason Miller was, sadly understated. They could have done more with him, but then again the saintly priest role suited him better. Also of note was Nicol Williamson as the stoic and angelic exorcist. What a stellar cast.
