As a disc golfer who is getting into bowling as an off-season activity, I can truly appreciate the discraft vulture hanging on the wall in the background 🥏👀
I played a local course this week and saw some people out there then later that night saw the same group at a bowling alley for dollar games. The crossover is real
I have found that what you tested here is relevant for you. Your rev rate, your speed, etc. "Upside down" exactly should result in similar reactions. However, bigger differences would be due to ball weight differences like top weight and pin distance from the CG. Believe it or not in the 90s it was found that rotating the label 90 degrees on Balls had some good effects. However, I think once again this was due to Pin placement relative to CG. Pin to PAP gives a driller a way to make a consistent layout for differences in primary release patterns.
Just judging off of the warm up shots it seems like the ball might be starting to roll too early and deflects a bit much resulting in flat 10s. However chris is a great bowler therefore I think he will make the adjustment and shoot about 232
I'm guessing 223. I'm still surprised when people are shocked by where the CG goes in a 1 handers symmetrical ball. Mo explained this a long time ago, when you drill a thumb hole in a symmetrical ball the CG is now in the thumb. Pin to pap and Val angle are the only things that will matter.
Interesting video. I used to drill balls in the dark ages (1980s) when all you worried about was finger weight and pitch. Is this not evidence that you just need to be a great athlete and adjust to whatever is in your hand? For sure, some conditions require different gear, but becoming a slave to your toolkit seems dangerous. (This reminds me of the famous trumpet player compliment: "That horn sounds great!" Nothing to do with the player.)
i'm going with a 212. I feel like ball will roll the same as it normally would, but I feel like after seeing the practice shots, a lot of ringing 10 pins will be left standing.
I'd say 218 👌🏻 CG placement has almost no effect, but it's an interesting video for sure! I've tried something similar with a ball that has the CG to the left, something that was drilled for a lefty while I'm a righty, and I've seen practically no difference.
I drilled a goofy type of "upside-down" layout with a pro-pin blem. The ball had something like a 9"+ pin to CG distance. I read a recommendation to mark a "pseudo pin" directly opposite of the real pin, and use that with the CG to drill a "normal" layout. Made sense in theory. Long story short, the ball flared backward over the middle finger hole.
Whoa! Wasn't expecting to see Jesse Gibson in your video at 0:34! He was on the Vincennes University bowling team too! What pro shop is he working at??
Does that make a difference gluing the grips in on a slant and cutting off the extra, most shops just put them in level. Even with a lot of pitch is drilled. I want to see how you drill the top sleeve to his thumb slug instead of the ball too. What's his spec sheet look like ?
Hey guys I have a question, I have a Motiv Jackal Rising and my home lanes are really heavy oil and the pattern seems to be oddly long. I was thinking of taking the surface down with 500 then 1000. Is this a good idea? I know my ball is made for heavy oil, but I feel like it’s still not reading early enough.
It’s good to know that CG doesn’t matter’ buddies pro shop is great. You hear a lot of ppl( bowlers) say CG does matter, but I always go by buddies Pro shop. Great video
i'd say about 227, Mo Pinel said in a video that the CG doesn't matter and I have been drilling balls according to the pattern on the ball vs using the 6-3/4 through the CG to make the rotation more visible downlane especially on solid colored balls. I thought the video was going to be drilling completely upside down with the pin on the bottom on the ball, would probably be USBC illegal though, had a 2 handed og hy-road drilled that way but it had a weight hole which is now illegal.
My wife decided she needed to bowl. So we pick a ball but the guy drilled it right handed even though order showed she is left handed. Ball wouldn't hook and I immediately figured it out. Driller didn't care said she is beginner so doesn't matter. Shop owner fixed it yielding hook.
Mo said something along the lines of put the CG of a symmetrical ball wherever the hell the customer thinks it should be because it doesn't change the roll of the ball at all. I'm guessing Kris will bowl just fine with this layout.......maybe high 230ish?
I'm confused. You said a top weight LESS than 2.5 oz, but yours was 2.67 oz, which is MORE. Plus, the short pin should make no difference on an upside-down layout, but would a longer pin make a difference??
Hello, buddies pro shop? Yeah, lookin for Matt. I need a ball with a 1 9/64 inch pin to cg and 3.14159 oz. Top, plus or minus 0.003 oz..... drilled so the labels never hit my track. and overnighted. You ship to fairbanks, right???
In the case of what Kris is talking about here, he’s getting more around the side of the ball at release, increasing his axis rotation. The more on the side of the ball you are (as opposed to up the back of it) the closer you get to spinning the ball like a top. This causes the ball to skid further down lane. The reduced friction from the skid motion causes the ball to store its rotational energy for longer and will break harder coming off the back of the oil pattern, down lane. This harder hook down lane increases angle into the pins and helps the ball continue at that angle through the pin deck. It’s just a way to keep the ball from rolling too early, and increasing the energy it comes off the back of the pattern with. It can be a double edged sword however, as this increased angle maximizes the penalties for bad shots.
Nothing new... we drilled a few balls like this about 20 years ago for a client. But back then you needed to drill a weight hole past the CG to make it legal, so we needed the client to throw the ball a couple times so we could put the weight hole in the first flare line and just missing the second, to make it legal. And it wasn't our idea - it was in an issue of BTM, and I believe it was a drill pattern Danny Wiseman used. Our particular client liked to play outside and was relatively up the back, and he averaged 700 for an entire season with the drill pattern in a second shift league. So it's really a control layout. Nowadays with no weight hole I'm sure the reaction is a lot different.
Maybe truly drill it upside down. Use the quarter scale to map the pin on the other side of the ball. Then use that with the same pin to PAP. Don't worry about the weight as it will be over on top vs bottom. In theory it should flare backwards with the same bow tie points. We did this a million years ago with the Brunswick phantom. (It used a Saturn ring style core)
I'll say a 256. It looked out of power on the backend, so no 300. However, Kris will make a small adjustment to his throw and change his angles....so the ball will retain more energy during the game. That will get him striking as usual.
9/ X 9/ X X X 8/ X 8 [split] 1 XXX. For 216. So I bowl as a full roller 2 hander. I've thrown pin up for awhile before I got my fit rechecked cuz my oil track was getting closer and closer to my finger holes. The pin up stuff for me goes super long and tumbles and having a hard time getting a 1:1 roll and not going through the pins easily. Full roller layout reads the mid part of the lane and has a nice 1:1 roll and it's very predictable. Using the purple hammer feels like a super strong super early reactive ball instead of urethane for me. When I shoot at my 10 pin for a strike from 2/3rd arrow, I usually cross over.
I’m gonna have to say about 225 or 230 something. I don’t believe that there would be much of a difference with the ball being drilled “upside down” given that it is symmetrical, but maybe the idea of it rolling different might cause him to bowl somewhat differently. Or there might need to be an added element (ie rotation, speed, etc.) in case the drilling makes a huge difference.
That's what they should of done. They actually didn't do anything, because the CG doesn't matter, so this is a perfectly normal layout as far as Core orientation goes. They should do it with an Asym, or like your idea, with the pin on the opposite side of the ball.
@@KennyGrinols Upon watching the vlog, 1st time I heard of drilled upside-down. It seems the way the ball was drilled/thrown, it uses up all its energy going down the lane and when it hits the pocket, it's like a RB w/ no trucking ability.
Sorry to tell the kids on tour the reason they go to urethane is the inability to control reactive. Urethane is your backstop because of rev rate and you can use less reactive equipment and still score with rev rate.I'm 56 years old, I have no rev rate. I use the most aggressive layout for a rev challenged because I can't rev it up and never had to. You kids need to take your hand out of the ball and just get simple. Norm has done it for 30+ years.
He bowled a 237. Nice game considering the bowling ball was "upside down". Knowing my game, I would've taken a little longer to figure out how to strike. Would've gotten to my head a little bit

I say 234. The zen master is a great ball and I have a feeling it’ll carry even if there is a drastic change between being “upside down” or not.
So what *is* in your league bag(s), Mr. Prather?
You actually did better than expected. This was a fun video to watch.
0:12
I know the cg placement doesn't affect performance, but with the thumb hole THAT far away from the cg, are you sure the static weights were legal?
I bet he will shoot 236. Love the vids.
Edit: Holy crap I was only 1 off!!
Watched this video again because it came up in my feed and now I have the question of does the track rolling over the logo affect anything?
I'm guessing 223. I'm still surprised when people are shocked by where the CG goes in a 1 handers symmetrical ball. Mo explained this a long time ago, when you drill a thumb hole in a symmetrical ball the CG is now in the thumb. Pin to pap and Val angle are the only things that will matter.

PSA not MB but yes.

Thats because they werent reactive as today…
I’m gonna guess a 226. Even if it’s drilled differently, he’s still good enough to figure out how to throw the ball correctly. Chris is a beast lol
I go for 230. However, what would happen if a ball is drilled on the other side (180 degrees from the pin and CG]? Curious to see that.
Might have to make another vid like that with Packy
Good game but does the CG matter if it is drilled for a no thumb 1 hander vs a traditional grip bowler?
Prather has a very nice relaxed form - he would have done well in the 1980's with short oil patterns and Urethane.
I would agree but it’s funny because he tends to struggle sometimes with urethane!
i'm going with a 212. I feel like ball will roll the same as it normally would, but I feel like after seeing the practice shots, a lot of ringing 10 pins will be left standing.
I have a bunch of questions about drilling I just bought 3 balls all drilled correctly I get very little hook in fresh oil.
What happens if you drill by using the PSA as the Pin; and the Pin as the PSA for your layout; on a strong asym?
I'd say 218 👌🏻 CG placement has almost no effect, but it's an interesting video for sure! I've tried something similar with a ball that has the CG to the left, something that was drilled for a lefty while I'm a righty, and I've seen practically no difference.

I've done the same but it worked, symmetrical ball. If the top weights are low enough I think now I would use pin and ignore cg

Question.... Did the ball after drilling meet USBC weight rules?
Does that make a difference gluing the grips in on a slant and cutting off the extra, most shops just put them in level. Even with a lot of pitch is drilled.

Comparison to the same ball drilled right side up?
Here is my question. Is the ball legal. What is the top weight on it now?

Would it be different if the ball had an asymmetrical core?
Wouldn't raising cg reduce rev rate in one handed bowlers?
Not anything that would make a difference!

What’s your favorite ball for a normal house shot?
How does one "add more rotation" to allow the ball to store more energy on the back of the pattern?
In the case of what Kris is talking about here, he’s getting more around the side of the ball at release, increasing his axis rotation. The more on the side of the ball you are (as opposed to up the back of it) the closer you get to spinning the ball like a top. This causes the ball to skid further down lane. Symm balls wont different at all. But asymm take away the power hook and smooths it out to more of a Symm layout
