Gotta love dwarf boas! They're actually quite common in herpetoculture, but a lot of folks don't know what's dwarf and what's not. Working on fixing that! Great recommendations. Would love to see more people getting smaller versions of these big snakes!
That starts with the term "dwarf". For rarity, especially pure and traceable through the generation until wild-caught, it can quite tricky to get. Localities like Ambergris Caye, Crawl Cay, Cay Caulker, Corn Island or Tamaulipas are much harder to get than Hog Islands or Tarahumara localities - depending where you are. Some being smaller than ball pythons. And the interest to keep pure BCI localities is kind of a newer trend. I think, many people just kept criss-crossing them with mainland. Today, some of these are on edge to get recognized as full subspecies, ... super interesting, super interesting color variations, too. And without morph craze.
I suggest Brazilian Rainbow Boas as an alternative for anacondas. Rainbow boas are their closest relatives, they have very similar faces, patterns, body types and behaviors, and not to mention the gorgeous iridescence that BRBs have! My BRBs really do look and act like miniature anacondas, and I'm absolutely in love with the species!
I love "little giant" snakes! This video almost felt like a checklist for me: I've got a half-dwarf burm, 2 SD retics, and a Sonoran dwarf boa. I've also got a blood python, which is like having the thickness of a giant snake, but at a medium-sized length.
Great video Adam! While not available in captivity it turns out there IS “draws” scrub pythons out there. On Millman Island, in the Great Barrier Reef the scrubbies don’t reach much over 2meters, that being said, it’s Australia, so not likely to ever be in the captive trade 😂
From this list, we have 2 Hog Island Boas, 2 Carpets and just got a young male Burm about a week ago. Love all of them for different reasons! Great list!
One of my favorite "dwarf boa breeds" other than the hog Island is the Solomon Island boa. Mine is a golden brown color, completely docile, and eats larger sized anole lizards
I voted for this so I will assume it was entirely my doing. That’s how it works, right? Also I just want to let you know that I’ve been a subscriber for well over a year and your videography went from normal RUclips to an experience. Especially with your bioactives. You’re amongst the top on YT with quality of footage. I sub to probably 20+ reptile/invert channels and you and Tarantula Collective reign supreme in your shooting & editing.
I love this list. I’m stoked you made a video. For dwarf boas, there are tons of cool localities. They’re all quite different from one another and some require different care. Tarahumaran mountain boas prefer cooler and dryer temps than a typical BI.
Yellow anacondas are fantastic. I raised one from a baby and it's the most tame snake I've ever had. I bought another as a sub adult and it was a little sketchy at first but now its completely tame. Bought a third as an adult and it's extremely tame. 8-9 feet and 30 lbs as a fully grown adult... perfect pet snake for me. They seem to be way smarter than other species I've had too.
I absolutely ADORE my carpet python, i've got a jungle carpet and although she's still young and only about 3ft long she has been a phenomenal addition to my collection. She's my first arboreal snake and I am pleasantly surprised with how much i've fallen in love with her
Awesome List! Definitely buy a Dwarf...from a known breeder. I read a story last week of someone who bought a Dwarf Retic of the internet and surprise, it wasn't. Enjoy your 15+ foot Retic, that you got for cheap.
@@Upper_echelon_exotics I’m in a similar boat. I don’t have any reptiles yet, but I love them. And of course, I always fall in love with the big ones (Burms, anacondas, carpet pythons, etc). Love my Burms, but living alone they definitely wouldn't be an ideal species to own for me! Liking the sound of the dwarf version though. Same with the super dwarf retics. Maybe at some point I'll get my room rearranged & find a reputable dealer for one of the species here in the UK. 🙂

After about five days of ripping through this channel and every other channel that has anything helpful to say about White's Tree Frogs, I have a small notebook full of care guides (figured I could cross-reference them with each other to "distill" the most-commonly-recommended/best configurations for them) and enclosure build setups. In the doing, though, you've convinced me to retry snake ownership (got a Ball, Belial, in college; he was more sedentary than I expected, so I'm wondering if a (semi)arboreal like a redtail or a Hog Island might be the move), and even made a damn good case for a gecko or a skink (which I've honestly always loved, too; a blue-tongue or Schneider's or emerald tree all seem like rad ideas). Pretty rare for me to lock in this hard for this many days straight; you make good stuff, man, and thanks for the points to other accounts to help specialize where necessary.
I was always under the impression that retics were pretty grumpy. But then, the ones I've been around probably weren't socialized, and it's been a LONG time ago (seriously, I watched the dinosaurs haul themselves out of the primordial ooze. Leave me alone). A boa that gets missed a lot are Nicaraguan Boas they get roughly the same size as hog islands averaging 4’-5’ little nippy as a baby but tame down pretty well pretty quickly
Chuck Royal is great breeder, I just got a BI boa from him 2 months ago picked it up in person got to see his breeding room great setup, he is great guy all around and very knowledgeable.
I just love BCCs!!! But Cratos is very beautiful, and I had to realy concentrate to what you were saying because of him exploring the room in the background, ahah!!!
Hey, amazing list! I agree with all of your choices they all have such great personalities if handled correctly. I hope to get a Super Dwarf Retic soon due to this video. Love your video's and love your channel!
I really like this video . All of those snakes are beautiful especially the carpet python. obviously dwarf reticulated python sounds like an amazing animal and so does dwarf Burmese python as well.
Dwarf boas are great snakes. I would argue one of the best starter snakes. They don’t get massive, they eat readily, not fast or super bitey, they come in tons of morphs and species, don’t need a massive enclosure, and they’re not too big or small. Our central boas are awesome!
I love my Tarahumara mountain dwarf boa. It's way chill almost ball pythonish. But it's a sweet heart, a great eater, beautiful pinks on it and the can handle a temperature and humidity range that can dip a little lower than BI or BC can handle
Great Video!!! my big snakes I currently own are a female burmese python, female mainland retic, female ARP, and a female green Annie (also a male BCI but he's not "big") and they are amazing to own but one thing I would also say is in addition to time, space, and experience, you also need a decent amount of cash to throw at them.I would also recommend an enclosure that is at least as long as the snake so it can fully stretch out and this may mean dedicating a room to the animal or like what I'm doing, buying a separate facility to house them. As far as dwarf boas go, I would also recommend a BCL. My BCL is GORGEOUS and super tame! (Im currently looking for a Boelen's python thats captive bred and from a reputable breeder like NERD so hopefully that addition happens soon)!
I’d love to see a video of bloopers, like your animals not behaving while your trying to record or you just stuttering, I thought it’ll be a cool short video idea.
One day, in 20 or 30 years, Im gonna breed giant and supergiant retics. Like, 30 foot retics. Im gonna do it, mark my words. No but on a more serious note, another retic lover in the comments!
@@WickensWickedReptiles I'm looking for a new snake snake now. And my state passed legislation not long ago banning large snakes, or requiring permits. So all your videos about smaller alternatives have been great. Plus I didn't have a while lot of room. The hog Island boa I learned about from one of your videos. I'm researching them now.
Even though you're in Canada (for now) I appreciate you wearing your USARK shirt! We (at least in the US) all need to to support USARK & help stop the Lacey Act Amendments!! Also appreciate Reach Out Reptiles & the shout out for a fantastic breeder of D/SD retics 👏
Do you know what would be amazing? Dwarf blood pythons. They're so unique, basically gaboon vipers but as pythons, but they need a reletively large amount of floor area for a snake of average length, and if I wanted to build a small tortoise pen I'd just get a tortoise.
When I was a kid we wanted burms & retics coz they got huge, nowadays I'm more interested in the dwarfs. I may start saving my shekels for a super dwarf retic. I've always liked the look of boas better but I've never had one, I might look into getting a pair. Y'all have a badass day 🤘
I can't find any good careguides for green/brown anoles, could you make one? My little brother recently got one and is trying to figure out how to care for it. Love your videos btw :)
You should include Candoia boas in one of your videos! Solomon Island tree boas (candoia bibroni) make for amazing pets if you want an arboreal snake that isn't too cantankerous.
Amazing list I keep an Albino Pure Darwin's Carpet Python and he's an absolute gem definitely one of the first snakes I go to just to cheer my up with his personality
Dwarf burm is definitely on my someday list. Tracking down breeders has been hard so thanks for the tipoff lol Also for anyone looking for a small boa: if you're not crazy about the look of Hog Islands, or want to get as small a boa as possible, look for Boa sigma (formerly a locality of B.c.i.), usually called the Sonoran Desert boa. Tarahumara and Tamaulipas are some of the smallest and most commonly available sigmas, averaging about 3-5 ft. Everything great about a boa in a ball python size
One thing to add about the dwarf/super dwarf retics is while percentages are nice, be looking for and asking about size specifically… how big the adults should be. A 75% super dwarf retic could either be indistinguishable from a mainland or 6-10 feet depending all on bloodline. Some breeders only breed for percentages, not size, and will sell you a thousand dollar animal that gets 15’ still. Also super dwarf retics are 6’ minimum. Finding a healthy adult snake smaller than 6’ is unlikely, so be expecting 6-8’ for something from the Kalatoa, Madu, or Kiuadi islands. I’m also gonna throw in for anyone actually wanting an island locality retic, because I highly recommend them, my top picks for good breeders are Reach Out Reptiles and Richard Bilbo. ROR mentions other good breeders in some of their videos too but those are the only stores I have personal experience buying from.
I have a male Tarahumara Mountain Boa, and at 18 months of age, he weighs only 175 grams. He will top out at 3-4 feet, and he is gorgeous. He has the same look and body type as a typical Central or South American boa, but in a very small package. I always wanted a Boa, but didn’t have room for a large snake, so he is perfect for me. I also have a female Cabo San Lucas Mexican Rosy Boa, who is beautiful. Rosy Boas also make great “alternative’ Boas, although they have a somewhat different look than the Central and South American Boas. Wonderful, easy-to-care-for, docile snakes, though…and they also stay in the 3-4 foot range.
Hey Adam have you ever done a video about Grey Banded King snakes? I feel like they’re one of the most underrated colubrid snakes out there and they’re super unique. Would love to see you cover them in a video!
I came across a dwarf Burmese at the reptile show in Hamburg, Pa a few years back and was very tempted to pick it up instead of a boa like I was there for. Didn't, but it was tempting as my previous Burmese was awesome (she was named Samus). Sadly, I ended up not being able to keep her when I left the apartment I was living in back then, so she went to a local breeder I was friends with.
Adam can you please make a video about what someone should do if they no longer want or can’t keep their animals? To push the point people shouldn’t release into the wild.
in a few years once i’m prepared and i would hope to get a burmese, if they’re readily available by then(fingers crossed they will be) i’ll be getting a dwarf burm! as long as you don’t live in florida you hear full positivity about burmese pythons and can’t wait to have a big boy myself. maybe calling them tiny to add some more comedy to it too lol
Scrubs are prohibited here in Alberta, but I have an old female coastal carpet that’s pushing 10 feet. She’s a doll. Carpet pythons are really inquisitive snakes, always on the move checking stuff out.
I wish Dumeril’s Boas came in a super dwarf variety. I got to handle one at the local reptile show last September, and it was hands down the most attractive snake there. It would have been perfect if that was the full size it would get, but I know it was just a baby, and would get much larger.
Great video. It’s a shame that dwarf burms aren’t as common, but I luckily got a ‘half dwarf’ from chuck royal a year ago. I hope in time they become more easily accessible.
This was a fun one. I’d love to see a video on the best nocturnal reptiles to own (preferably lizards). Most of us work all day and just when I want to hang out with my pets after supper they’ve crashed for the night 😜🤦🏻♀️
I got a couple half dwarf burmese from Chuck last year. Didn't know he had a female progschai to pair with his male to make dwarf burm. Will be checking is website soon!
Love the burms they just a get a little bigger than i want to deal with now. I ran across a dwarf in craigslist didn't know they existed but i want going to trust craiglist. Did some reading and sounds like the dwarf burms have an attitude. It's not a dwarf version of the species but can be considered a dwarf alternative and that would be short tail pythons you don't get the length of a burm but you get the girth in a short package
Love the videos, been watching a lot recently and was wanting to see a video about your opinion on black headed pythons (am a aussie and looking at getting one)
On the topic of the yellow anaconda they actually get a bit stressed out if they are kept in too big of an enclosure according to reptiles magazine anyway.
Hog Island Boas are great, but be aware that you'll have to be on a very long waiting list if you want one from a reputable breeder. I had to wait about a year to get mine, but it was a great decision. At 3.5 years old, my male HIB is not even 5 feet long.
@@WickensWickedReptiles Where are you located? I'm in NC, and I went to multiple reptile shows, reptile rescues, and spoke with breeders in-person. I couldn't fund anyone who was breeding pure hog islands. I eventually found the Hog Island Boa facebook group and got on one of the established breeder's waiting lists. If you know any breeders in your area who have good stock, I would be happy if you could put me in touch!
I always thought Savu/Macklot's pythons were the most similar to scrubs. Savus, I think, stay even smaller than Macklot's. Sadly because Jakarta isn't exporting as much if at all, these snakes have become really rare these days.

We need cantankerous merch 🐍 with a big bity snake on it
I have a male Tarahumara Mountain Boa, and at 18 months of age, he weighs only 175 grams.
Oh I'm excited 😊 🤗 this will be awesome
enjoy!
I'm really starting to live for these videos cool now to get me a 🐍 or something 🤔 appreciate your videos
Glad you like them!
Good video lots of good info. thx for the mention! :)
I'd recommend you 10/10 times man. Your animals are beautiful!
Great video. It’s a shame that dwarf burms aren’t as common, but I luckily got a ‘half dwarf’ from chuck royal a year ago. I hope in time they become more easily accessible.
Very cool!
I love this thank you for your work keep it up.
" hey why didn't you get that huge snake "
" too big. "
" How big was it "
" ooh about 18 feet "
" laughs in that's what she said"
hahaha
Hopefully grabbing first spotted python and first non King snake tomorrow. Thanks bud
I would say that dwarf version of the scrub python ( Simalia amethistine) are Tanimbar pythons ( Simalia nauta)
Could you do a video on what frogs you can house with whites tree frogs
Love the videos, been watching a lot recently and was wanting to see a video about your opinion on black headed pythons (am a aussie and looking at getting one)
Great list! Gosh Bolens pythons are so beautiful 😍
I think so too!
Next video, guess witch reptile messed up my hand lol. Love the content as always and hope your hand heals.🤙🏽
ehhh thanks
I assumed those were from sharp puppy teeth 😂
Bowyins pythons are velvet 😍 💖
True!!
I have a ball python rn but really wanting a dwarf burm kinda scared of feeding on but really cool looking animals
Can I just say I love them names of your reptiles? As for my little giant, Feather the half dwarf bci says hello!
Awesome video Adam
Legend!
Adam Awesome Animals - Second channel Idea Maybe?
On the topic of the yellow anaconda they actually get a bit stressed out if they are kept in too big of an enclosure according to reptiles magazine anyway.
Love my Solomon Island Ground Boa
thank you for a great share!
Hog Island Boas are great, but be aware that you'll have to be on a very long waiting list if you want one from a reputable breeder. I had to wait about a year to get mine, but it was a great decision. At 3.5 years old, my male HIB is not even 5 feet long.
depends where you are I guess, they are very available here
@@WickensWickedReptiles Where are you located?
These are pretty awesome!
