Just be careful to match your experience level to your rescue. I adopted a Ball from a rescue out of Bakersfield with feeding issues who'd failed out of a couple of adoptions. Turns out he has vision problems and is a teeny bit neuro-wonky, hence the "feeding problems". His aim sucks and if he misses and hits glass or dirt, he gets frightened. Took a minute to get it sorted, and build trust, but he's running well now.
Adam - idea for a video if you haven't already done one: How do you know if a reptile likes someone/something/some action like being petted, etc. I mean, they don't wag their tails and lick you like a puppy does, so what should a reptile owner look for?
Antaresia are the best! I have a 3x2x3 ft enclosure for my Stimsons python and he uses it all, though he isn't very good at climbing he loves it haha.Im so glad I got him before my jungle carpet python though because it's taken me the better part of 2 years to get her to a point I can handle her without worrying about her taking a shot at my face...but now she is a sweet little angel baby :D
I definitely agree with Carpet pythons! I had my first Morelia (Bredli Python) after keeping Royal/Ball Pythons for 5 years now, currently I also have a SD Lavender Het Snow Retic, 4 Royals, 1 Bredli and picking up a new Coastal Carpet later this week!
I love carpet pythons but generally speaking, they are what I would describe as an “intermediate keeper’s” snake. They are often more defensive and jittery and need consistent handling over extended time. Balls are far more chill and tractable.
I saw them in a pet shop a few weeks ago for the first time irl and got why they've become so desirable. Such a great size, super chill, but also very active for a big boa. Super cool snakes.
Another aside for BIs, there are dwarf localities and morphs that keep the size down (bloods in particular run small) and there are morphs that cause them to run bigger (IMGs tend to get big). You can also control your boas size by just slow growing it, which is usually better for the snake's health anyway, Boas that are 6ft+ at less than 5 years old don't usually live very long, but you can easily keep a male BI in the 5ft range as an adult with the right choice of morph and not overfeeding. I know Boaphile has a 24 year old Boa in his collection that is a male BI that is only 4.5ft long, perfectly healthy and has produced many many babies.
Yeah, Antaresia - such a nice compact size yet feel more substantial than a similar-sized colubrid IMO. Never an issue feeding frozen/thawed to Antaresia. In fact, it can take some work to reel in that feeding response. Kind of the other fun thing - they do learn routines and recognize rewards.
Boas are awesome pet snakes. Had them for more than 40 years. They are absolutely voracious eaters and tame down really nicely if you give them the attention they deserve. If you want an amazing animal that does not take up a ridiculous amount of space, a boa constrictor is a phenomenal choice.
Boa morphs get real interesting too since, BCs, BIs, BSs, and BOs all have scale irridescence, the only Python that does are Retics. And then Rainbow Boas take the irridescence to 11. And if you don't overfeed them, they will grow slowy, yes BCs and BOs can still get huge, but they might not reach that size for a decade, and BIs can easily be kept under 6ft with careful selection of morph and locaility.
Since you had them for so long, how old did your oldest get? I read that the oldest snake recorded was a Boa named Popeye who was just over 40 years old.
I am so glad you addressed this topic. I do have a ball python and really enjoy him, since learning his feeding issues. Which was stressful for us both. As a first time snake owner and not knowing the troubles that can be had in just giving a snake a rat🙄. There was a learning curve I wasn’t expecting. I don’t think that ball pythons deserve the best beginner snake spot. There are just better options for the ‘new to snake’ folks. However, that experience has NOT stopped me from adding more and different snakes to what is now a reptile room, I just wish the reptile community would encourage other options for ppl with little experience in the hobby.
honestly the main reason I chose NOT to get a ball as my first snake was that I'd heard about the way they go off food, sometimes for months at a time, and there's nothing you can really do to "fix" it. that would give me so much anxiety that no amount of "it's natural" and "they'll always be fine!" would ever help with because what if it's USUALLY normal but THIS TIME it's not, y'know? My choices for Ball subs would be Rosy boas and Bulls. Both are generally good feeders, not inclined to bite often, though Bulls can be bluffers and hissers, and neither will rack up a bunch of vet bills bc they're generally hearty and the genetics havent been tampered with much.
While taming down my bull snake he's only bitten me once while extremely scared and it was this super light bite. Their threat display is crazy loud and dramatic but if you just pick them up and prove to them you're not trying to kill them once they tame right down. I love my bull snake so much. He's so active and interesting in absolutely everything including me and the dogs.
@onioncontrol I agree. My girl only nabbed me once, and that was as a noodle. She doesn't threat display, but she does keep up a low-level conversation all the time. Totally chatty, tho. She's a lot of fun.

I think a good substitute to ball pythons could be a super swarf retic. you get the cool colors and patterns with some added iridescence. I think a retic is going to move around a little more theyll climb a bit more so a little more interesting to watch. and they arent as fast as a colubrid so you can still chill with them. (i have colubrids and do chill with them but i think a slower species would also be better at that)
We have a 40 gallon we had been cycling with the intent of getting axolotls. However, we were having a hard time getting the water perimeters where they should be so we decided to drain it, clean it up and get another reptile instead. We have discussed a rost, a hog or a Mexican black king.
I got a Dumeril’s boa last March for my first snake and she’s friggin’ AWESOME!! She didn’t eat for awhile when I first got her but it turned out that it was because I was making some newbie mistakes (make sure to give them enough substrate to burrow when they’re young!). Once she ate her first meal I’ve had no issues at all with her eating, and she didn’t lose any weight while she was waiting for me to get my sh!t together. 😂 She’s absolutely gorgeous, super chill and curious, and very easy to handle. And maybe mine is the exception to the rule, but her poop doesn’t stink at all. 👍🏻
@@WickensWickedReptilesme too I hope that they become more popular. I love my bull snake so much. Much like the topic of this video for a long time I thought I just wanted a ball python before I learned about larger colubrids and other than maybe king/milk snakes they're possibly the best beginner large colubrid.
Coastals can get bigger but for the most part theyre all within the 5-7 foot range. coastals are just more likely to be in that 6-7 range but HEALTHY 8-9 foot ones are actually pretty rare since we dont really have the large localities.
Sonoran boas are fabulous! However, most Leopards on the market are actually Boa sigma-imperator hybrids. The morph originated in Sonoran Boa sigma and was bred to the Colombian Boa imperator morphs before we knew the Sonorans were a different species, so unless you know the lineage is pure Sonoran, they shouldn't be labeled as such IMO. Hybrid or not, they do tend to stay smaller, as do the other Mexican and Central American dwarf boas. You've got your pretty Leopard morph now, but feel free to HMU any time you want other dwarf boa B-roll in the future! I have plenty to choose from. 😄
I've had corn snakes and 5 ball pythons but I've rehomed them all and now have two burmese pythons, and in my opinion the burmese pythons are the best pet snake!!! *If you'll have proper room for them as they grow... My female is 16months old and at 7ft 9lbs...
Boa constrictor are my favorite snake ever, but I didn't know the Sonoran was as tiny as the Crawl cay and Cay caulker localities. I had Colombian rainbow boas as a kid, I bought them as a four year old breeding pair and they were four feet long. I like ball pythons because they're cute and chill and come in so many colors (back when I had snakes in 2005, there were hardly any morphs and they cost a fortune) but am concerned about the infamy of the food refusal.
I have a Sonoran boa for 4 years now, he is very small but unbelievably strong. He was a bit spicy the first year. It took some patience, gentle handling and gloves. Now I can just reach in and pull him out when cleaning with no hesitation and no gloves. The Sonoran boas also tolerate cool ambient temps much better than the more tropical localities. Smaller and easier.
Spoke about this topic to a breeder here in SA . I love this list but wouldn't really apply to South Africa , spotted/childrens pythons are super expensive over here , bullsnakes are impossible to find and really expensive if you do . But Dumerils boas are so cheap , you can get a adult for the equivalent of under $100 Boa imperators are gaining popularity a ton tho . We also require a permit to keep carpets . My list would've been Bredli python Boa imperator Dumerils boa
I keep and breed spotteds there’s one of my favorites I have the regulars granite and patternless but instead of bulls I gravitated to the northern pines.
Sorry I'm late just got off of work, I hope all is well, great vlog as always, boas are so gorgeous I would love to own all snakes maybe not the really toxic ones but the rest I would lol. Have an awesome Monday.
My milk snake does that, I like to call it "cute snek tricks", he probably wants a mousie, but if I fed him every time he did that he would get VERY fat haha.
we've found through our experiences that childrens are sooooooo much nicer than spotted's, our spotted python maggie, despite constant handling, always bites everyone except my mother. whereas our children's are so social and love being handled. In my opinion the tamest carpet python species is Centralian's, mine have never bitten or struck or hissed at anyone and love being handled but all our other carpets are a bit more temperamental.
Haha yes,, from Australia, enjoy watching your content and all species of Reptiles and Python to boot.. not that I'd boot a Python, but ya get what I mean.. 🐍 🤘🏽
No no no… ball pythons are arguably THE BEST SNAKE, and here is why: you tell your snake-averse husband (or wife) that you would love a snake and they finally cave and let you get one… if you got a good eater first, you’d be set for life. But if you get a ball python, and every time it goes on a food strike, you mourn the wasted mouse. You would then be able to get a boa or other “good eater” to eat what the ball python refuses. It’s the perfect snake because it allows you to get more than one. ;)
Ball pythons may be common, but that's because they're just that great. Either that or I got lucky because my two beeps are so nice children can hold them meanwhile my milk snake wants to zoom and bite. He's still new and in the process of taming.
Hey just a heads up, there's a snake mite on the head of that ultramel snake when you were talking about ball python morphs literally right before the husbandry pro ad. On my TV you can see it really well
Can you do a video on blood pythons, if you haven’t already? One of the snakes I have is a mix between a ball python and a blood python.. he has the temperament of a ball python and the body and general shape of a blood python… which ive being told is pretty rare. People tell me blood pythons are typically a lot meaner, I would love to know your opinion, whether you believe in the hybridization of the two snakes or not.. please and thank you 🙏
No mention of Rainbow Boas? IMHO they're a great BP alternative, they're usually a little smaller than a BP, have the more active personality of a Boa, eat like Boas and the care requirements while a little more stringent than a BP are still not as bad as people make it out to be, if you have an enclosure that holds humidity well (no screen tops) it's not difficult to keep their humidity up. Rainbows are also reasonably priced, especially Colombians, and look amazing, especially Brazilians or a leucistic colombian (and lucy colombians are quite common). Rainbows are also usually cheaper than Leopard Boas, which are fairly pricey, ESPECIALLY if you get a Leopard that has additional morphs, a Blood Leopard looks incredible but is a $3000 snake and regular leopards are 700-1000.
Speaking of smaller boas. Think you could do a video on that? Top 5 boas that still look like "boas" that aren't the "red tails" you know the bcc's or Colombian bci's. I think you know what I mean.
That is a boa for me. They are better in every aspect imo. More curious, Eat better, get a bit larger but not too large... You pretty much get the best of all worlds here.
Is Husbandry Pro what Billy and King Austin use at Mutation Creation? He loves it. I finally got my first snake at Animal Con. A hognose, named her Georgie Girl after the song from the sixties. And we have a red beardie named Weasley. Guess we don’t need Husbandry Pro yet lol. 😂❤
I'm currently getting an enclosure set up for a hognose that will be my first snake, but I love boas, and like hearing about them. I've heard of and thought about rosies and I know you've talked about Dumeril's boa before, but this is my first time hearing about a leopard boa. Do you have a care guide, or anything else for them? I'd like to learn more
Omg, I love this! I've been thinking about getting another snake someday and was wondering what would be similar to a bearded dragon as far as handling and I've been hearing ball python could be similar in that way. Do leopard pythons hold into you/ are they chill? Are they bitey? Mini python seems intriguing as well! I like handling my reptiles. ❤
Well, I checked. Domino doesn't want to go back to the pet store. I guess the Ball python stays. And of course she went into shed one day after arriving home and the new hide for the larger than expected snake hasn't been delivered yet. Of course, why wouldn't that be the case?
So i want to get a spotted python but don't know what kind of tank I should get do you have any suggestions?( I am a beginner and not really sure what to do)
I have kept all species antaresia and i would recommened all but the anthill/pygme (antaresia perenthis) to someone new to hobby unless the snake is 6 months or older so it gets some size Edit Not kept one from Indonesia antaresia papuensis as its kinda new or the banded wich is only described as Antaresia spp for the moment

She’s absolutely gorgeous, super chill and curious, and very easy to handle. And maybe mine is the exception to the rule, but her poop doesn’t stink at all. 👍🏻
I was just looking for another snake, I was already looking at a Sonaran, and all you did was cement my choice, thanks!
It's nice to see someone give loves to bull snakes
Love em
I have a spotted python. He's nearly 4 years old. Best snake ever.
I love to hear this!
I'm interested in the Macklot's python. All Canadian Reptile Girl really sold me on them.
They sure are cool
Well done Adam, Thank you!🐍💕👍
Thank you too!
I'd love to see a up to date care guide on jungle carpet pythons.
wicked idea
Our ball python, Hershey, doesn't fit the stereotypes. She is very sociable and rarely refuses food.
Great video bro and informative and awesome snakes 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I gotta love my ball pythons though and a good replacement snake would be the boa
I've had corn snakes and 5 ball pythons but I've rehomed them all and now have two burmese pythons, and in my opinion the burmese pythons are the best pet snake!!! *If you'll have proper room for them as they grow... My female is 16months old and at 7ft 9lbs...
Ball pythons are definitely my favorite.
They're perfect size personally. And I'm a little scared of bigger snakes like boas😅
I love em
I’ve been very lucky with my two ball pythons, they both eat like boas 🙂
I love to hear it
Boa constrictor are my favorite snake ever, but I didn't know the Sonoran was as tiny as the Crawl cay and Cay caulker localities.
But Dumerils boas are so cheap , you can get a adult for the equivalent of under $100
Boa imperators are gaining popularity a ton tho .
We also require a permit to keep carpets .
My list would've been
Bredli python
Boa imperator
Dumerils boa
This is very interesting
Hi, Australian here, yes I still watch videos about snakes I can't have 😂 I can dream
Oh wow! Nice! Haha
We all want what we can't have.. but you know you folks in Australia have some awesome snakes to keep.
@6strings735 that's true, we don't have as much variety species-wise but I didn't have to sell a kidney to get my axanthic blackheaded python haha
I keep and breed spotteds there’s one of my favorites I have the regulars granite and patternless but instead of bulls I gravitated to the northern pines.
I love em
Sorry I'm late just got off of work, I hope all is well, great vlog as always, boas are so gorgeous I would love to own all snakes maybe not the really toxic ones but the rest I would lol. Have an awesome Monday.
Thanks for always being here
Sometimes I'll be close to my corn snake's enclosure, and she'll be looking up at me.
@@Reptiles4Life212Nobody told you to reply.
that's awesome
thats funny lol
she probably is expecting a mouse
My milk snake does that, I like to call it "cute snek tricks", he probably wants a mousie, but if I fed him every time he did that he would get VERY fat haha.
@mrvwbug4423 and you don't dare spike the snake's water because they can't hold their liquor too good without fatal results.
Just in time for my drive to work. Yay!
You got this!
I have 4 M.Imbricata and 1 M.S.Variegata... awesome species to keep . Very social
Great video as always
Appreciate that
Im from Australia and thank you ❤
Anytime
we've found through our experiences that childrens are sooooooo much nicer than spotted's, our spotted python maggie, despite constant handling, always bites everyone except my mother. whereas our children's are so social and love being handled. In my opinion the tamest carpet python species is Centralian's, mine have never bitten or struck or hissed at anyone and love being handled but all our other carpets are a bit more temperamental.
The Cay Boas are good to but I suppose similar to the Sonorans
I totally agree
It’s the perfect snake because it allows you to get more than one. ;)
SNEAKY😂
This is brilliant. I got to make this work. 😂
You are the best RUclips ever have a cool day have a great day have a nice day
Thanks! You too!
Ball pythons may be common, but that's because they're just that great. Either that or I got lucky because my two beeps are so nice children can hold them meanwhile my milk snake wants to zoom and bite. He's still new and in the process of taming.
oh wow!
Hey just a heads up, there's a snake mite on the head of that ultramel snake when you were talking about ball python morphs literally right before the husbandry pro ad. On my TV you can see it really well
It’s a banana but I think I know what clip you mean, it’s from 2021. Shot for a video about mites. Good eye
Can you do a video on blood pythons, if you haven’t already? One of the snakes I have is a mix between a ball python and a blood python.. he has the temperament of a ball python and the body and general shape of a blood python… which ive being told is pretty rare. People tell me blood pythons are typically a lot meaner, I would love to know your opinion, whether you believe in the hybridization of the two snakes or not.. please and thank you 🙏
super dwarf retics should have been your number one lol
a bit wild with the food drive IMO
There has been testing! Cali Kings are pound for pound the champs, they have that blackbelt level BJJ
Hahaha
Thanks 😊
Speaking of smaller boas. Think you could do a video on that? Top 5 boas that still look like "boas" that aren't the "red tails" you know the bcc's or Colombian bci's. I think you know what I mean.
I love that idea
#5 could also be a tarahumara mountain boa kinda like Sonoran boas
Agreeed
You mentioned some similar snakes but I’ll add the Nicaraguan Boa as well
very cool snakes
Please do a leopard boa care guide
good idea!
I don’t know why African house snakes are never mentioned. Particularly the brown house snake. It’s a hit here in Southern Africa
I just talked about them a couple weeks ago :)
Can you do a video like this for retics? I want a super dwarf so bad but they are still pretty pricey and run the risk of getting larger
I sure can
Rosy boas would probably be a solid option!
Absolutely!
The best ones for me are carpet python and spotted python because they are the only ones legal in my country
Nah, i absolutely love and want my ball python. Best pet I’ve ever had. ❤
same!
That is a boa for me. They are better in every aspect imo. More curious, Eat better, get a bit larger but not too large... You pretty much get the best of all worlds here.
Strongest snake I’ve ever experienced was an 8foot Cuban boa. Stupidly strong snakes.
Such an underrated species
I have a Kenyon sand boa and they require little attention really and he has allot of personality but the only con is he has trouble eating sometimes
Confirming that I am indeed watching this from Australia
Thank you!
Yep that’s what they use
Bolivian short-tailed boa. Puppy dog tame---and a joy to handle.
Amazing
The corn snake I have is a good substitute, but there's too many to choose from.
I agree!!
I'd like to learn more
Good luck!
Leopard boas I think you bean, they hold on and are not bitey :)
@WickensWickedReptiles - yes! Thanks so much!! I'm thinking either leopard boa or spotted python. Time for me to do some research! Thanks mister!
Blood Pythons are the coolest pythons in my opinion
Boa gang baby👏
Well, I checked. Domino doesn't want to go back to the pet store. I guess the Ball python stays. And of course she went into shed one day after arriving home and the new hide for the larger than expected snake hasn't been delivered yet. Of course, why wouldn't that be the case?
Yea I’ll stick to ball pythons lol. They’re just cooler lol.
no doubt!!
@@WickensWickedReptilesthanks for commenting dude. Your one of my favorite YTers
There's always the standard alternative of Boa Imperator
Sure but they are much bigger
I can’t say there is a replacement for a ball python as my ball pythons, Wayne and Garth are staring at me right now … judging me.
Judgy bois
I like heavy bodied snakes, but a bit smaller than a ball python
who doesn't? I love that size! No wonder :)
So i want to get a spotted python but don't know what kind of tank I should get do you have any suggestions?( I am a beginner and not really sure what to do)
Link in the description:)
My female dumie is over 9feet.. close to 10. Eats a fat rat every 12 days.. very "moody" shes old and cranky. Love her very much
I just left the comment about the snake mite. Im not talking about the black spots you can see the outline of the mite if you zoom in.
huh, interesting
I have kept all species antaresia and i would recommened all but the anthill/pygme (antaresia perenthis) to someone new to hobby unless the snake is 6 months or older so it gets some size
Edit
Not kept one from Indonesia antaresia papuensis as its kinda new or the banded wich is only described as Antaresia spp for the moment
