First CUT Into Our New Shipping Container!

  • There’s no going back after making the first cut in the shipping container! This part of any project is always the most nerve-wracking but also the most exciting. With each milestone, we’re getting closer and closer to turning these three shipping containers into the perfect container home for our family.
Lou has learned so many different skills over the past few years from electrical wiring to plumbing to carpentry, but welding is a whole new arena! Luckily for me, he’s really good at picking up new things and he hit the ground running installing this 200-pound door.
By the way, what do you think of our choice of a steel door? I think it makes the container look like a human-sized safe! We might do a glass door in the kitchen container to let more light in, but Lou thought it would be a nice feeling to fall asleep knowing that our container was secure. We plan on putting in pretty thick insulation, so that’s why the door placement is so high off the ground. And the next time things warm up a little, we'll get it all sealed and waterproof! Hopefully, once it’s all done it will be effortless to heat in the winter and stay cooler in the hot summer days.
Thanks so much for joining us on this shipping container build series.
    Big hugs,
    Dana (Lou, Max & Freja)

A shipping container in the middle of a forest? Have you thought this through? You are surrounded by WOOD. The vernacular construction material in rural areas in the USA is WOOD. The ecological option is to build from local WOOD. Wood bends and breathes with the climate. Wood is cool in summer and warm in winter. Wood doesn't create condensation and mold. Wood structures can easily be constructed, modified, enlarged or repaired. Wood is an easily renewable resource, especially when you are living on land in the middle of a forest. You can use the offcuts to heat your home and never worry about your back yard turning into a rusting heap of metal. Yes, the welding hat and giant gloves look dramatic, but is this really a pragmatic way to create a home?

Love watching all your projects! ☺ But I do wonder - what are your thoughts on insulation?? I have now seen several north american/canadian couples (I'm from Sweden) building or just living pretty far north with little to no insulation in their homes. Whats up with that!?!? Single glass windows with condensation building up, which then freezes. Unisulated tents heated with a wood stove in the middle of the freezing winter (the heat loss is enormous!). In my house we have triple glass windows and 12" thick walls, which is pretty much is the norm here. Can't compare that to a "home made" shipping container home, of course, but it gets me wondering!

I'm often amazed at how interesting many of your videos are. I sometimes expect to be bored with things that are so far removed from what I feel would be most useful to me -- then somehow, your challenges and projects pique my attention and usually hold it, even during the more mundane moments. Congrats, on great story-telling, I guess?
    My only suggestions would be:
    a) that you flip the door to open inwards, so that the hinges are on the inside? Might solve the freezing issue as well as allow you to open the door wider.
    b) at the open end you could eventually build a slightly recessed full wall with a bay window or nook (and a door beside it) to allow some natural light in as well as make it feel more "homey" -- in front of that you could also add a small deck.
Just my suggestions for what it's worth -- I look forward to seeing what amazing plans you have. Also maybe see what Ladi&Margaret are doing with their shipping container(s) guest house.
    Cheers!....from North Vancouver.
