Really cool and looks simple! I on my hand have been looking for a solution like this for my MXQ with an S805 cpu. Hoped it would come something but it looks like I have to stick with the standard firmware.
question for a noob like myself, is it possible to completely scrub out old software within the device to install linux only software? I seen horror stories of rooted malware in some of these. thanks.

Is it possible to share that img file ? , mecool M8S pro only work with kernel 3.14 and they remove all of those from the website

well in for a penny in for a pound,. I started this when I got hooked to Kodi. I had a raspberry pie 3 that I loaded libre electric with the Kodi installed. Loved it. then I got this M8s+ first I couldn't get exodus to load but I got Yoda on it. But I missed the libre electric. I thought that someone would put it on my android box and after a little searching I decided I was going to try things your way but right now my brain swimming so I will thank you in advance
Great video. Do you know of a image to install Open Media Vault or Xpenonolgy for these boxes? Or a way it could be accomplished? Possibly make a video for it?

i have a little different situation, hope you can help.
I have S905x3 xair96, its stuck in a boot loop mode. ive tried most possible ways to unbrick it, but its a NO GO.
Since your method has option to boot from SD card, can i do that on my device with your method and then booting it with the hard reset method and then choose boot from SD card. (Will this work?)
Also if the above works, will i have to choose the boot from SD card manually every time if i reboot the device? or is there a permanent solution to set up to boot from SD card since i don't have access to the BOX UI.

Im currently working on a beelink m18. I followed the directions of this video and a bunch of others but I keep getting the same error. When it reboots it gets stuck on the google tv screen? any thoughts?
danke für das Video. diese Idee hatte ich auch schon mal Linux auf eine TV Box zu machen um als iobroker Server laufen zu lassen aber es stört mich das ganze über SD-Karte laufen zu lassen weil dann kann ich gleich den Raspberry nehmen und der frisst nämlich die SD Karten daheim muss das ganze auf den internen Speicher der langlebiger ist als eine SD-Karte nur so macht es Sinn. Im Moment läuft der iobroker auf einem normalen Desktop-PC bei mir.

I am thinking of add Linux on an SD-card, as you describe here, on a MECOOL M8S, PO L, which uses S912 instead of the 905.
Would this same method work on mine?
I managed to get Armbian start on my Mecool M8S Pro LB - A bit of problems with the display (I don't know how to shrink it) and wifi (I cannot make it work) - I will take a look at the forums.

The information on here is very outdated, and no longer works because the package images are different now on how they install. There was many images for different boxes, but now there is one, and you have to edit the image you put on the SD card to work with your specific chipset. Look for a video on here titled "Linux on Android TV Box (2021)"

You can run desktop apps, even emulators or heck video editing
trying to turn this into a pi-hole from an android box s812 model with latest Armbian_21.02.0-trunk_Aml-s812_focal_current_5.10.0_.img...was able to load the AML_xxx.zip file but i get no HDMI following the reboot, anything to be done for that?
What If I follow the all instruction, but when I insert the SD card, TV Box is do not start booting from it, just start normally.... :/

i might do a quick write up for that on my website, but to compile the wallet you just need make -f makefile.unix in the src dir

if it has speakers, then you can get the audio out using the speakers, if it has a Jack port, you can connect external speakers to that.

Check the technical specs of your device first. It says in the fucking title already its specifically compatible only to Amlogic S905X SoC

I tried installa ARMBIAN Ubuntu Mate following the forum for the past week but it alway failed at the end. I manage to change the root password, set new user, and than after this the boot get stuck doing "a start job is running for daily apt download" or sometimes even before on "reached target bluetooth". Can you help? Thank you
I got stuck in the part where says "reached target bluetooth" then I pressed Ctrl + Alt + F1 then I was prompted to a login terminal. I logged in then typed "startx" and then the Desktop Environment apeared
