Plot twist, as they mentioned that the sky of that world is possibly fake, so are the regions and they suddenly materialize into existence for the traveler's convenience, that's why Paimon's been stopping the traveler so he doesn't discover that the world is fake and there is only emptiness beyond, manipulating when they can leave or not and forcing them to do each nation's chores first, disctracting them from their main mission. (Don't mind me, I just felt like reaching a bit lmao)
@@octosquid48 not that wild actually, there's been a pretty solid theory going around that since the future of everyone in Teyvat is premeditated because of the Fates written in the constellations that Teyvat is, in a sense, just a story "written" by Celestia or whoever else is in charge that the Traveler is experiencing, and at the end of the story they'll have the chance to take over as the script writer of the play The basis for said theory is the last summer event, books saying aspects of Teyvat, like the sky, are fake, the Fatui harbingers being named after roles in stage plays That's not to say the world itself is an illusion or a literal storybook or a play though, my personal interpretation is that since fate is written out in the stars it means the Future is already set in stone, meaning Teyvat is a metaphorical stage play using the residents as characters that drive the plot forward, but everything is still very real to everyone involved
I loved it when it was just an endless path of sand, kinda adds to the mystery of Teyvat. And it's weird now because the Masoleum and hole is just kinda...there. From Natlan's perspective I mean.
For real, it was like ok this is the section of desert that is even remotely safe for humans to explore, and the rest was vast hills of sandy death. Like you could look out there and almost feel fear.
you have to remember that the open world is pretty scaled down. it won't make much sense to make a really large world for a game that's already breaking mobile game drives. not to mention people were already complaining about the "vastness" of the desert area before, and that was small. imagine a truly vast desert true to its name ala Dune.
@@indiomie I think most of the complaints are about the art direction and how before Natlan, there was the illusion of the mystery of Sumeru's desert that was kept up by the unexplorable parts where you could only see endless sand in the horizon. Pre-natlan it was like you were trying to gaze at a bottomless ocean that was obscured by darkness (or in Sumeru's case, a blinding sand storm). I kinda wish Natlan was located a bit to the north so that Sumeru's desert still had that mystery to it. It plays to the player's imagination and really emphasizes the lovecraftian theme with King Deshret's usage of forbidden knowledge where horrors and insanity-inducing knowledge are hiding right in your doorstep or hidden by the sands.
0:19 tbh i would perfer natlan to be a little further away so we can have a big sand dunes (without mountain or valley like sumeru desert) just one sand dunes and you can see teyvat's creature skeleton .
Should have made the rest of the desert to Natlan what the water between the main land and Inazuma is. Nothing actually there but obviously the story would find a reason to by pass all that desert to get you to Natlan. Trying to cross the desert early would warrant a insta kill state such as a massive sand storm where you "lose your way" and get sent back to the inhabitable part of the Sumeru desert. Mihoyo flopped with this tbh.
@@trongray664 inazuma then is having a civil war but natlan is different no civil war between their archon and people so the enviroment was chill so i wouldn't say they flopped... but it's just ... missing that sand dunes vibe but maybe we'll see this sand dunes in the future's story, maybe...

Even without the Civil War plot point Inazuma was inaccessible because of the water but it literally didn't matter because the story itself teleports you. Doesn't need a plot point. I'm talking solely about map design.
@@trongray664 they probably considered the mobile users which is a big chunk of users. keeping the sand area may take considerable amount of storage space and is probably not gonna be used/traveled much by most players. Just look at the Bayda Harbour area which was unlocked along with Petrichor, not only did they reduce some landscape and waterfalls, they also didn't put any monsters there and not much to explore.

@@hanselleivaI cannot tell you just how much you're missing out. Once you turn off the Sandstorm, you can go to the very top of the Mauseleum. It is g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s. You can see the entirety of Teyvat by climbing the pillars on each side, allowing an stunning view of this world not even the Dragonspine Celestial Nail or the Jade Chamber can provide, in my opinion.
Damn, I get it from a video game perspective this used some otherwise un-utilized space on the map, but it makes the desert feel tiny and underwhelming whereas before it was vast and oppressive. Now it’s like “oh yeah from the capital of Sumeru to Natlan it’s like a 15 minute boat ride” and that’s really sad to see the desert scaled down so much. It really was the only “vast” space in the game and to see it cannibalized for video game reasons kinda sucks.
They should have begun Natlan as a desert expansion and then worked in the rest of the landscape gradually imo. I guess we're meant to interpret the previous vast desert dunes to still "exist" however due to that area not occupying any location it's gutted and Natlan is meant to be considered farther away than what we see it as. With that being said who the hell's idea was it to replace some of the previous desert dunes with fricking water and LOT's of it? I wonder if they will consider adding back some sand back drop to the south cuz that looks terrible and cramped.

I pray you've got comparisons of all areas before and after. I was not playing this game during all the additional regions and recently i was viewing the sumeru desert (where natlan would soon come to be) and was wishing people had made videos on areas
Definitely didn't expect natlan to look like this after seeing that there is just another desert. I was really hoping that the natlan isn't going be like another shitty desert.
I also set up pictures of all the placeholders to see how they changed after the update and set up my characters facing natlan on the pyramid and the vorushuka oasis area it was cool to see the difference when I logged into them
It was so interesting to see how it was a desert one day, and the next it's a peninsula. So interesting to see these changes and be able to reflect on them via videos.
Ngl, the desert seems way too small and just improbable now. With Natlan's water bodies that much closer to the hypostyle pyramid, one thinks that the desert should get enough precipitation to just become a rather tropical paradise climate but no. They should've put Natlan way more westwards. With more deserts, possibly even some dormant volcanoes and more mountain and ridges in between the Natlan waterly bodies and the desert in sumeru. That way, the desert would be probable. Now the desert just seems like forced smh
Additionally if you actually read Genshin Lore the desert was once like the rainforest but due to the abyss ravaging the land Celestia had to drop the nail and contain it by burying it in sand hence, the desert.
The positioning is also just very awkward for the journey. Like, we on our way to Fontaine we just... walked passed Natlan... Why? Why did we cross further north instead of just going a bit further west?
The Sumeru desert doesn't feel like a big, endless, desolate land like before, it feels like everything is clumped out. You can see Natlan's landscape even from the Akademiya. Something doesn't feel right :/
hoyo might have changed the scaling of their game map between sumeru and natlan, they gutted LOTS of stuff thats supposed to be on the inner sea region (like Layla's home village and bada harbour being literally 2 buildings) ... it is what it is since its at heart a mobile game.
@@trongray664 because the constraint is not rendering its storage space. even if the model is not rendered the thing still occupies storage, and genshin is nearly 100 GB on pc alone. and streching the walkable area would strain even more storage, the old place holder for the desert was just a untouchable texture wich takes way less storage space. also in 5.0 hoyo did change the render distance for genshin.
@@sch3ffel Even more map expansions are coming tho including another nation and it's own expansions. At some point it seems like diminishing returns. Edit: Are you sure the render distance is shorter? I can still see the Narukami Island from Mondstadt as I'm typing this.
@@trongray664 before 5.0 i could see the jade chamber from the desert now its mostly able to view it. also yes there are more map expansions coming... expect the culling of empty areas to be even more aggragious like snezhnaya being righ up on dorman port with tons of verticality. and even the port itself getting the petrichor/port bada treatment edit: you can see how they purge things off just by noticing that somehow genshin is still under 100 GB of storage. some projections have the full map with all nations genshing will take 105~110GB, 120~125 if they get polygon happy shoving things everywhere and streching out the map.
Very cool, i love the way you do this. I have a question, is it possible to use this method to lower the water levels of Fontaine? In-game, they said the water levels have been rising over time, I'm curious how the map would look if we lowered the water levels.
I know more areas will get added in future patches but wow, Natlan is a lot smaller than I thought, even including the inaccessible areas of the other 3 tribes I wonder where Mare Jivari would be placed at, unless that's the underground area of Natlan, which would make sense there should be little to no wind underground
I can already see all the tribes locations, the purply area inbewteen the floaty silver rock area is most likely the collective of plenty, the volcano will probably house a pyro tribe, and the floaty peak area will either house cryo or anemo
That would make sense lore wise when they said the roots of irmensul doest reach that far into natlan. It's going to be much smaller than i was looking forward to. I was hoping a bit that it would spread out to the whole west side of the map and connecting to fontain and sumeru.

I can already see all the tribes locations, the purply area inbewteen the floaty silver rock area is most likely the collective of plenty, the volcano will probably house a pyro tribe, and the floaty peak area will either house cryo or anemo

That would make sense lore wise when they said the roots of irmensul doest reach that far into natlan. It's going to be much smaller than i was looking forward to. I was hoping a bit that it would spread out to the whole west side of the map and connecting to fontain and sumeru.
I dont like how close it ended up to king deshret's mausoleum... It takes away some of that grandeur
