Hi JT!!! Well done and nice to see all those power pop additions to the collection.... The band i know and heard before are the Lemonheads, but not very familiar with their entire catalogue. The Posies sounds and looks like a cool band worth checking out. cheers and be well
This was great, JT! A combination of bands I was listening to at the time, and others that I have read about for years and their discography has passed me by (Teenage Fanclub, Guided by Voices). 'Fun and Games' is what got me into The Connells. Sidebar: good friends of mine here in CT who are also musicians are close friends with Jon Auer, and he played at their wedding a number of years ago. I caught him live a few months ago in a very small intimate setting, playing songs and telling tales of the Posies and Big Star. Watching this video made me think of American Music Club: another band from the early 90's I like that falls into this genre.
Right .. Mark Eitzel from San Francisco.. American Music Club ! I remember you mentioning Jon Auer.. Check out the best Guided By Voices songs, 2 that I recommend " The Best Of Jill Hives" and " Game Of Pricks".. these songs alone will hook you !
Nice picks, the 90's were great for power pop. Teenage Fanclub and The Connells especially are household favorites here. Both still kicking around making great music. Cheers!
I really dig all these selections. Except I must admit I have never listened to Archers of Loaf or Guided By Voices. But I will definitely be looking for them after watching this. Unfortunately I don't think that I have any of these on vinyl either. "Taillights Fade " has got to be one of my favorite songs. Did that Michael McDermott do anything for you? He has other good records too. Been listening to him alot lately. Thanks for posting.
Absolutely.. I like my Michael McDermott Cd. I listened to other tunes from different Albums, thanks for the recommendation, Dave ! With GBV stream "The Best Of Jill Hives" and "Game Of Pricks" and I'm sure you will like some of Archers Of Loaf.. very underrated band !
Hi JT, an era I really liked. I saw the Lemonheads live a couple of times; absolutely classic songwriting ... I would rate Teenage Fanclub's 'Bandwagonesque' as their masterpiece. There is a new band from Hartlepool, England called Mt. Misery. They remind me a lot of 90s Teenage Fanclub ... I also saw Guided By Voices and Archers Of Loaf live back in the day ... Do you know Tsunami from Arlington, Virginia? They have a 5LP box set out on the Numero Group label ... I love the Posies. I saw them when they toured 'Frosting On The Beater', and also when they backed Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens as Big Star.
You really have seen some key shows.. In the 90's Kai and I were to busy playing out.. In San Diego, 2000 ) I wanted to go and see GBV at a perfect smaller venue.. We had a gig that night.. Oh well. I don't know Tsunami.. I will listen, also to Mt. Misery
What a bunch of great albums you have there, excellent power pop of bands that I've heard of but only from listening to some various artist collections and also from the alt-radio station I used to listen to when I lived in SLC. I never see any Buffalo Tom, Teenage Fanclub or Guided By Voices out there in the wild. I listened to your recommendations from GBV and it's just great power pop, tons of hooks in well developed songs that are short and sweet. Love it. I do have an EP of Archers of Loaf on my hard drive, but have nothing in a physical format. And I really like their music too, I just haven't explored them as much as I should, even though they are on my list of things to listen to. Great video and great pick ups!
Hey there, Mike ! I don't think these records will be around, except in some record shops. I bought them online, and Buffalo Tom took me months to receive ! You will like the rest of Archers Of Loaf, I'm sure.. And i'm big on Superchunk ( Chapel Hill NC ) as well ! Thirteen is also a terrific record by Teenage Fanclub. Since we have so many records, you and me, I'm at the point where I will pass on some vinyl and just enjoy streaming and or my Cd copies. Cheers, Mike ! ( I watched the great doc on The Tragically Hip on Netflix this past week.. I cried like a baby ! )
@jtsrecordroom3963 I am not a huge Tragically Hip fan and that probably keeps me from getting my Canadian citizenship. I don't think they'll let me get that until I swear allegiance to their pride and joy, but I just haven't been hugely impressed by their music yet. But that could change.
I’ve seen archers dozens of times starting after their song “South Carolina” started getting airplay on college radio. So grateful to have grown up in Raleigh. Have you discovered metal flake mother or Picasso trigger or small or zen frisbee or greensect? Other local bands I enjoy.
First off, thanks for checking this out, and no, I don't know Picasso Trigger, Small, or Zen Frisbee.. And have only heard of Metal Flake Mother. I will have a listen later on my drive into Reno for work. Superchunk is a favorite as well !
The Posies get my vote 🗳. Two members joined the reformed Big Star 🌟 in the 90's. Being on Geffen met they took a backseat to Nirvana , Guns & Roses , Sonic Youth & Hole.
Let's put it this way.. The Posies RULE !! Haha😉I remember hearing that about Big Star, and that makes sense about them not getting turned out much by being stuck on Geffen at the time.. Thanks, Dave
I need to get that Lemonheads 30th. I have the "Come on Feel..." 30th and absolutely love the bonus tracks. Its like enjoying these songs in a new and different way. Take care.
Absolutely, and I was just streaming " Come On" this morning driving around town. Car Button Cloth" will be a good one as well ( I think they reissued it w/ bonus tracks ). Have a good one, Maria , and thanks !
Jt, if you see my Steve Albini tribute vid we're dressed like twins 😂 Buffalo Tom...Yes!! My dream is to find a copy of Sleepy Eyed on vinyl. I have everything else and love the stuff since they reformed too. I even seen them live a few times. Great band. Another killer Jt with A Shame About Ray. I also love Come On Fell The Lemon Heads & Car Button Cloth. I think the Outdoor Type was written about me 😂 The earlier punk stuff is great too. The hits keep coming with Teenage Fanclub 👍Oh the jangly goodness. The first 3 Frank Black records are brilliant & the fist FB & The Catholics is great too. Bob Pollard & GBV!!! You are smashing it out of the park Jt. I saw GBV once. I called it the 40 songs, 40 beers & 40 cigarettes show because I reckon that's how many Bob played & consumed that night 😂I love the everything from the first era of GBV, but I only have one since they reformed. I just can't keep up!! They're worse than the Gizz with the amount of stuff they put out. A new one for me to check out. I missed the Connells, but like the sound of your description. Archers are like all those bands you mention, but to me they have a lot more edge and gnarly guitar sounds. Eric Bachman is a great lyricist too. Posies OMG Jt, you have just done a video on my youth. Cheers...Ben
Yeah.. All of Lemonheads stuff is excellent, including their early punk albums ! Frank Mills is another favorite cover as well on "It's A Shame About Ray".. better than the song from "Hair" soundtrack ! Have you ever met the bass player from Australia that played on Mrs. Robinson ? I love all of these bands and a whole slew more from the era ! Teenager of The Year is good, and all of the Black Francis solo records are great ! I'm a Superchunk fan as well, and The Posies are King ! "Let Me Come Over" must have been sold out, because it took me 3 months to get.. Bill Janovitz is awesome and Teenage Fanclub is incredible.. I like the songs "Gene Clark" and "Neil Jung' from Thirteen and Grand Prix. I was listening to The Archers on my drive home... Vee Vee ! .. And Icky Mettle is so so good ! Listen to "Slackjawed" and "74-75" ( they wrote a song for me and my friends😊 ) The Connells, your gonna like it !
@ I just saw Superchunk for the first time since the 90’s. They still rock! The dude who played bass with LH was in a great Sydney band called Smudge I think. I have never met him, but I have seen Smudge back in the day.
That bass line on The Lemonheads cover of Mrs. Robinson is so good.. I can hear it now ! Cool, that he was able to make it from Australia for the session. Evan asked him to play bass on the entire album, but he couldn't make it to the studio quickly enough.
I've got a few early Lemonheads records, including the one you featured. Teenager of the Year is my favorite Frank Black solo release. It's as tight as it is wild. It's like it was all written and recorded in one crazy session. My mind went right to Atari Teenage Riot when you featured Fan Club. A lot of that music has fallen off of my radar. I need to reconnect with it. Have a wonderful holiday Jt
Overwhelming Colorfast dropped a s/t album in 1993. Butch Vig produced it. I call their sound alt power pop with a sprinkle of grunge. One of my very favorite releases of the ‘90s.
I listened, and their debut is excellent.. Seattle grunge meets Matthew Sweet in some places, either way, a killer band, for sure ! I will be in Amsterdam this coming spring, I'll see if I can find the re issue on vinyl over there, or in Paris. Thanks for the recommendation.. Good band !
I have never heard of the Connells before JT. I will check it out. I always felt Shame About Ray was the best album by the Lemonheads I am a fan of the 90s , just wish the albums were easier to get
I was a teenager in the 70s and 90s rock/pop music was completely oblivious to me. I’ve not seen one of those records before. How does that happen? JT I hope Santa has been digging records and brings you some great stuff. May you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.
Same here.. I'm the class of '75.. When the 90's bands started happening and sounding like 60's 70's with a harder edge.. I love all of it ! Thanks for the Christmas wishes.. Elfie has been here every day, making sure Sean is a good boy ! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well ! Thanks 🎀
Hi Jt, I had a Buffalo Tom CD, I don't remember the title, but the cover had a little girl with a big head praying. Was it Red Letter Day? They also did a fantastic cover of Velvet Underground's All Tomorrow's Parties on a tribute to the VU comp. It's A Shame About Ray is a great album, love that title song and their version of Mrs. Robinson is just great. On the CD version, they also do a cover of Frank Mills, a song from the musical Hair. I have Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque, and love it, but I need to get Grand Prix. Guided by Voices is another great 90s band, got to see them in 2002, and it was a great show, I have most of their stuff on CD, but I have Bee Thousand and some live bootlegs on vinyl. The Archers of Loaf is a name I've heard for years, but never listened to them, maybe it's time I do. The Posies are fantastic, I have Frosting on the Beater on vinyl, love the song Dream All Day, great power pop! Thanks for another look into your awesome collection Jt, hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!
@nearwildheaven4840 Thanks for your note, Michael. I really enjoy Evan Dando's take on Frank Mills. Car Button Cloth and Come On Feel The Lemonheads have been reissued as well, with a 2nd record included. I'm sure that you will appreciate Archers Of Loaf, and I'm a Superchunck fan, too ! Thirteen is my other favorite Teenage Fanclub album. Merry Christmas !
Hi JT. Have you heard anything from Frank Black and the Catholics? I've requested a box set from them for Christmas from my daughter. I basically was impressed with a solo album from him on CD called " fast man raider man ".
Yes, I like all of the Frank Black & The Catholics as much as his first 3 solo LP's ! "Dog In The Sand" is the one I'm most familiar with. I hope Santa brings you that cool box set under the tree !
My vote goes to The Posies. Dear 23 is my favorite album from them. The song Any Other Way is amazing in every way possible. Apparently there was some disdain between The Pixies and The Posies. Lemonheads is a great one too!
Steve !! Definitely a favorite era for me, and Dear 23 is a smidge better I feel than Frosting On The Beater". These are beautiful records ( The 7 ) and they sound great. See you on yours..🎄
I'm a huge fan of It's A Shame About Ray, and of course just about everything Juliana Hatfield was involved with is great. Other great choices as well.
Never heard of Buffalo Tom I heard of Jesus Mary Jones? I might have heard of the Lemon heads , Never heard of Teenage fan club do you have any Oasis, Off spring? besides Jesus Mary Jones and not including the main 90's bands like perl jam , sound garden do you have any bands I heard of?
Yes.. I like all of those bands, Mark. Oasis, I have, Offspring, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden is killer ! This video is all 90's power pop, for the most part.
Hi JT!!! Well done and nice to see all those power pop additions to the collection.... The band i know and heard before are the Lemonheads, but not very familiar with their entire catalogue. The Posies sounds and looks like a cool band worth checking out. cheers and be well
The Posies have a harder edge to them, as do The Lemonheads on "It's A Shame About Ray" I think you will like both of these Cristian

@jtsrecordroom3963 Ah yes...sorry for repeating myself a bit 😆. I'm looking forward to seeing what the New Year brings on the vinyl front.
No worries, I would have loved to have seen Jon Auer perform. And yes.. records in our future.. I think it's gonna happen ! LoL !! 😚
Nice picks, the 90's were great for power pop. Teenage Fanclub and The Connells especially are household favorites here. Both still kicking around making great music. Cheers!
Thanks for looking in on this one. See you on yours ! Have a good holiday 🎄
You can't go wrong with a Mesa amp! Thanks for a fantastic video! 🙏
When I bought my Mesa in '96, it was the loudest 50watt made ! ( DC5 ) LoL !! To play on "3" would blow your hair back horizontally ! Haha 😝

That’s a selection of bands I’ve either only heard of but not heard or never heard of. I’d like to check out a few of them.
Please do, and the songs I mentioned are pretty key for power pop with a 90s edge ! Thanks
Definitely there's plenty for me to check out. Thanks for sharing JT.
And these are the somewhat mainstream bands between 1990-1995. Songs like "Slackjawed" and "Flavor Of The Month" I think you might like !

Buffalo Tom was not easy to get a copy.. sold out, I guess ?
@@jtsrecordroom3963 I've just never seen anything out there except a CD or two but that was a while ago. What I've heard I've really liked though.
You might already have on Cd "Big Red Letter day" and "Sleepy Eyed" are both excellent.. although "Let Me Come Over" is the one IMHO 🙂

I'm not familiar with Atari Teenage Riot.. I looked it up. Your right, Teenager Of The Year is an excellent album ( Cd ) for me !
Love The Connells…..very underrated band. Great episode and will check out some of these bands.
I listened to The Connells a lot all the way through the early 2000's.. I love that band ! Great singing, songwriting and guitar tone !
Thanks for the recommendations! I'll definitely listen to teenage fanclub
Jean.. I think you will like "Don't Look Back" "Mellow Doubt" and the long sweet jam of "Gene Clark" off of the LP Thirteen. Thanks so much
Awesome
Thanks Bro

Hi JT. Have you heard anything from Frank Black and the Catholics? I've requested a box set from them for Christmas from my daughter. I basically was impressed with a solo album from him on CD called " fast man raider man ".
