  • My HugelKultur raised garden beds have just been a rat haven for many many rats. Time to get rid of all the timbers in the base and see how many rats I can upset. Chickens were very helpful as usual.

It was really something to see your relationship with the chickens, that was such a great episode! It’s too bad the rats moved in, you unknowingly created a very nice, upscale neighborhood for them. I know that you will solve the problem as soon as possible, again, thanks so much for your wonderful episode, it was fantastic!

Any time I pick up a shovel, digging tool or anything that looks like it may have seed in it, Trouble is always at my side. The others turn up when Trouble looks excited by the action. They do keep me entertained while working.

I have a similar system of beds... I heard some noices from within one of the beds last summer (first year of use for the beds) thoght obout rats, but found a skin from a snake later amongst the cabbage, so i thougt maybe it had been a snake living there. We have 4 cats, so I have not been si worried about rats really. Thanks for charing even the things that don't work out the way you planned. 💚🐔

Always a learning experience. Just glad I am not depending on it to survive. Next year everything will be rat proof. Well fingers crossed. At least the snake will eat the mice an rats so that is good.

Don't get me started on bloody rats Simon, I've got the things here from the bloke down the back who has racing pigeons, just unbelievable, they're never ending mate. Unfortunately I've had SO MANY RATS here I've had to bait the place and they're so many rats I'm replacing them on a daily basis. I'm using the red Tom Cat 2 baits and they are excellent. I have been for months and I've gone through at least $150 worth of baits and I just bought an 8kg bucket the other day. Good luck mate. Seeya Rob

I am trying to avoid that but I fear it might be the only option if I ever want vegetables.

Definately a job for the pups! With moral support from chickens of course 😊

My pups have a blind attack instinct regardless of the potential wounds they may receive. I like my pups and am a bit soft where they are concerned. Lots of wire and other items that might injure them so I am on my own.

Your hens sure do love to help don't they? It was good to see you in the garden. The cucumber or squash in the background looks like it's going well. What else do you have growing? I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt again. Unfortunately, we still have about 2 1/2 months to go. Come the end of next month I will start my seedlings. Getting excited to have some fresh produce. Blessings to you and your family, hug them tight! g.

Pumpkins, Cucumbers and Zucchini in the background. Nearly finished unfortunately. Has not been a great year with a very cold spring. That and the rats have eaten all my tomatoes which is why the early demolition of this garden bed. Planted some Golden Nugget Pumpkin this year that did really well and quite tasty. Also have in Corn, beans and peas, unfortunately another rat favorite. Mixed in amongst it all I have some Petunias, Poppies and Pansies for a bit of colour and invite for the Bees. Beetroot have done well and some Chili that is still yet to grow fruit. Hope the rats try out the chili for sure.

I never realised that making a hugenkultur bed might also make an attractive home for rats! Good to see man and chicken working in harmony though

Hmm yes! I was intending to go this route at my new property, but I have a major rat problem here at the old one and I sure don't want to create that situation AGAIN!!

Might be ok if you put fine wire on the bottom of the beds but I am not risking it.
