  • G'day, mate! In today's video, I put 50+ Anthurium seeds into perlite prop boxes in order to germinate them and grow them out. They're all Anthurium hybrids including:
    - Anthurium luxurians x crystallinum x papillilaminum
    - Anthurium forgetii x
    - Anthurium hoffmannii x
    - Anthurium Dark Knight
Connect with me on Instagram - / petevsplants
I'm still a total noob when it comes to growing out Anthuriums, so please leave any advice in the comments below. I'm hoping to get a few mother plants out of this batch that I can then use to make hybrids in the future. Hopefully these guys grow fast and push out inflorescences quickly!

I can't wait to get into anthurium. I have to wait. It's a post-relocation project. I just don't have the room. I'd like a dedicated cabinet for them ideally.
I have recently made space to start some seeds I already have and will be getting those going once I've restocked my media supplies.
I've got some cactus, ponytail palm, and coffee seeds I've been hanging to start since September. I can't wait!
I'm actually getting the cactus sorted today. Only 20 seeds of mammillaria boscana, but still exciting. My first attempt at cactus seed germing. 😁
I love germinating and growing things from seed. There's not just the feeling of "I did that" but I love watching plants develop and go through all their stages of development.
At a guess, with my little bit of experience with plant breeders) the 3 way cross is a lux x (chry x pap). The more experienced breeders I've met tend to use parenthesis. There needs to be an "industry standard" as it were.
I like to know, just out of general curiosity, which plant was the pollen donor and which one bore the seeds. I don't know if that matters in plant breeding, I'm just curious about everything really.
When you stop learning, you start dying.
I've a strong love hate relationship with perlite. Love it for the plants but it can be a mongrel to clean up, and I can't stand the touch of it. My brain balks at the sensation.
Macaulay Culkin is 42 fwiw. Same age as me, gods I feel old! He was definely looking a lot older at one stage. I think he's got his shit together again now. Not an uncommon tragectary for child actors. Linsay Lohan is another example.
Oh. Nostolgia. It is pobably why we have Disney and Harry Potter adults. It's why I still love the Labyrinth and The Princess Bride. Memories of good times.
Love the random tangents. My brain is the same. It just meanders when I'm doing plant or house chores and some of the most random things come to mind.
You character and way of being makes me chuckle and adds value to my day. Thank you.
I can't forget. Hello Peaches and kitty passing through in the background. She looks like a calico. Love them. Moodiest moggies tho I reckon. My neighbour's in a calico and she is a very moody girl. She does not like my boy and lets the whole neighbourhood know! 😂 My favourite cat in the semi-feral resident clowder when I lived off-grid was a calico. She hated everyone and would cut you with you touched her. When I left, she'd gotten to the stage of coming and seeking attention. I wanted to bring her with me but couldn't for many reasons. I miss her.

I usually just use pure vermiculite in take away container. Sometimes I dust some peat moss for more surface area. I’ve only been growing velvet anthuriums for a year now but its pretty much all I grow besides Hoyas. Here’s some tips that I’ve learned from my experiences with seeds- moss is definitely easier in my opinion. I have tried perlite and pon… you will absolutely destroy the roots if you allow the substrate to dry out. My favorite is putting them in a pot with chunky mix and putting them in a clear box. They’ll stay in the pot for months and you don’t run the risk of transplant shock. Also, unlike other aroids anthuriums need cool temperatures. I don’t recommend anything over 80F. They definitely will not tolerate tons of light, basically give it as much light as you would a gloriosum but never as much as you would a Thai con. Start feeding early and cal-mag is a must. Lastly, do not let them dry out!

Oh yeah, I've been sucked in by the anthurium seeds obsession! I have quite a few little boxes with little salad leaves in them 🤣 I find they propagate super easily, but getting them to grow on and size up is the tricky bit. Some are doing super well, but my precious precious little variegated ones of course are still just one tiny leaf! Gah!
January 9th is on the calander because the Pallidoflorum seeds I bought will be on their way!!!
The knowledgeable woman who does Shoots Galore (she's an incredible grower!) advised me to start them in seed starting mix - so I do that and I add in a heap of perlite and actually add some compost to the mix. I suspect they need feeding quite soon and that's why they slow down...hm...
But that works super well. Always on heat mats or in boxes on heat mats.
I've also had luck with a layer of composty aroid mix with a thin layer of moss. so they germinate in the moss then grow down into the aroid mix for nutrients.
So is actually use a pair of tweezers to get them off the paper towel, and just rip a bit off with the root attached to it, all good, it'll just compost away lol!

I would say you can germinate the seeds by putting them on a paper towel and then you can put the paper towel directly on the perlite in a prop box, I think that way you don't have to transfer them and just let them be there to do their thing. and if you're afraid that paper towel might be too rough for their roots once they grow out a bit then thin tissue paper would be great too. I did the tissue paper and perlite thing with mung beans in science class back in primary school and it worked beautifully.

      @petevsplants7516  Год назад

Yeah, I had been using them in winter with good results, but once we got to spring, the moss in the prop boxes was drying out because of the warmth and the roots weren't growing into those areas and weren't doing as well as unheated boxes. So, I think there must be a nice goldie locks zone there temp wise.

I know this is an older video but… I’m assuming you live in Australia? I’ve just bought some seedling anthuriums in nz that were forgetii x x unknown and the picture of the mother plant was that exact same picture.. 😮 so either my dude is lying and stole the picture from your person.. or both our sellers or lying 🤔 I reverse image searched the photo before I purchased and it didn’t come up with anything so I thought I was safe but you can imagine my shock to see the image pop up on a RUclips video I’m watching!!

Wow, weird one... No idea... But yeah, I'm in Australia. I think it's pretty common that dodgy people will just google images and use those for plants their selling and not actually show the real thing, so you just have to be careful.

Haha I wish I could. Exporting from Aus is nearly as difficult as importing.
