Among my favorites: "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962) from director John Frankenheimer. Having killed his evil mother and step-father, we *think* POW veteran turned brain-washed assassin Raymond Shaw has finally found redemption. But he's terrified he hasn't. He instead commits suicide, stunning hero Frank Sinatra and the audience. The 2004 "remake" doesn't even rate as a shadow.

The second to last scene where the students give tribute to Sir with a ballot sung by the singer Lulu and then him tearing up his job offer to be an engineer was heartwarming. Your last miss was last seen in the film An Officer And A Gentleman. The very last scene where Zach comes into Paula’s factory to pick her up and carry her out as Joe Cocker sings Up Where We Belong.

The Mist. Great ending because you don't see it coming because you expect the happy ending in just about any movie.

Excellent List, so glad Eternal Sunshine included here. Shawshank is one of the biggest heartwarming ends of all time. Most people, by now, have heard it was a box office and critical flop when released. Now its one of the most beloved films of all time. Fight Club end was fantastic and the choice of song was pure perfection. I love the end of Lost In Translation with the mysterious hug and whisper

    2001 A Space Odyssey
    Citizen Kane
    Dr. Strangelove
    Silence of the Lambs
Friday the 13th. (Not a big fan, but I do know what a good final scene it has).

The final scene from the film, The Quiet Earth(1985). Zac Hobson awakens on a beach somewhere, as the credits start to roll. You hear the sound of the waves on the shore. He looks over the water, towards the horizon. You see it. He sees it. He is a small dark silhouette, overwhelmed by what he see before him. The orchestral music comes up. The final scene shows the wonder and shock on his face.(No spoilers. Check out the New Zealand sci-fi film!)

Have you or could you do 'opening' scenes? Such a scene, for me, Once Upon a Time in The West, Henry Fonda as a cold blooded killer. First movie I saw in a theater, as a kid, 'Planet of the Apes'. That ending really got me.

Spartacus, when Kirk Douglas looks down and sees his son, who was born a free man. That scene makes me cry every time I see it.

Andy and Red both made the ending of Shawshank Redemption satisfying in their own individual and unique ways
The way Andy outsmarted the warden and escaped while exposing the corruption of the prison
And Red’s truthful and just speech about rehabilitation
All lead to the two friends’ eventual reunion in the outside world

The ending of Romeo Must Die when Han and Trish meet up after Han killed Kai and Mack is arrested for attempting to kill Isaac which fails
E.T.’s ending where he goes Home. What a tear jerker . Also the end of Big Dady when while Sonny doesen’t adopt Julian but becomes a really good friend of his . The part that hit me was when Julian was upset about Sonny not adopting him

the one thing that irks me so much in the usual suspects is the shot of the skyline over the boat on fire that was supposed to be burning for MANY hours, but is clearly only a few minutes from the small size of the smoke plume. then again, maybe keyser soze was that good of a liar
