6:02 riff is SO bitchen. Yeah I could write to that. Cheers! ps: I have 2 old Peaveys, too. Though I played a Kustom dfx 35 w/Celestion for most of my guitar gigs and jams. like 300. Took out the Kustom like 125 times. (I play a 90's Fender acoustic sometimes too). 2005-2019. Till just before covid. A drummer buddy died of Covid in early 2020. The dude I was gonna use for my next gig. Boy. That's hard, ey? Gotta start it up again, I suppose.
We actually had some good gear back in the day. Peavey solid state didn’t sound as bad as we all made it out to be. It wasn’t no world class tube amps. But their combos were like tanks and did the job.
My favourite practice tube amp kicked the bucket, and so I pulled my Rage 158 out of the storage shed where it had been for years, and it's still kickin'
Brings back memories that’s for sure! I used to have one of these back in middle school. It came in a beginner pack with a Peavey raptor which was a strat knock off. I used to run a boss metal zone in front of it with the knobs set to the metal setting that came with the boss user manual *cringe*. I’m sure my neighbors still hear all that single coil hum LOL.
Tonight (June/07/21) while taking an after dark stroll through my neighborhood...I spotted what looked like a small suitcase. Its one of these .It appears to be brand new. It has 2 cables with it. One is curly. There is a blue stripe across the front, it says PEAVY RAGE 158. On the back, it says, made in the USA. I took it home. It is in pristine, spotless condition and works perfectly.
There are 2 different Red Stripe Peavey Rages out there, 1 made in US and 1 made in China. I have the US model and got my son the Chinese one. They are slightly different sounding side by side to my ears the US one sounds a bit more defined but both are great practice amps especially for under $50 used. Keep in mind these are not $2000 Mesa Boogies so as long as you don't expect them to sound like one you won't be disappointed .
The video I just watched about the Peavey rage 158 where was showing post reverb post delay was that done with foot pedals or is that built into the amp

No. However, they DO have a CD/TAPE line in, that bypasses the preamp. You'll have only the volume and tone controls on your instrument and effects chain. But, it works pretty well as an improvised loop. I like it with a tube screamer into a MI CrunchBox clone and a 7 band EQ, into the CD port.
@@springbloom5940 how do you make that work? Does it require much modification? May I have a pic or a diagram of the way you utilise the CD in as effect loop, please?
@@davidlalremruata sorry to be late but it's just an input. So it would probably be better to just use the front of the amp. However It should be hard to wire one in if you know circuits and have a good drill bit.
Just so I 'get the picture clearly' I would like to hear what your description of 'post' processing is (ie after mic,? in/out of effects loop on mixer?Within a pc mixing program like cakewalk?) better yet, what was used here and how?
Within a PC mixing program. I used the DAW Reaper. The "post processing" simply refers to the stock plugins I used in Reaper after the fact the guitars were recorded. The order of the effects chain is from left to right.
@@mattlinnemann1 Hi Matt.. so does the guitar record straight to the DAW and then on to the 158 or are they plugged into the 158 then sent to the DAW for recording (where 'post' is added)?
@@mattlinnemann1 Thanks Matt.. that is very clear now. My setup is guitar through a Boss GT-3 to 158 then mic'ed to a mixer to Interface and then to Sony Natural sound receiver. I have a second channel I can choose which is the same Boss GT-3 direct to the mixer and same to Natural sound rec . If I plug directly into 158 and mic to the mixer, I get a superior 'Transtube' tone from the 158 which I really like playing Blues (mostly clean on the Strat Neck PU) No doubt the 158 dig a little dirt when using more pick attack.
Yes you can; I have used it before with a laptop and mp3 player. I think you have to control the volume only via your device though, not the amp. So, use caution when you plug it in.
You didn't have reviews of amps like this in Guitar World, or Guitar Player magazines. They only reviewed pro stuff, like the average reader could afford a 5150, or was even on that level to use one.
There are 2 up/down switches on the front side of the amp. The one on the left adjusts the channel from Clean/Lead. If you are on the Clean channel (up position), you can adjust the Clean volume by adjusting the Clean Volume knob, located just to the left of the Clean/Lead channel selector up/down switch. The Equalization section of the amp(contains the other up/down switch and 3 knobs) is located on the right side of the amp. This will control the Equalization for both the Clean and Lead Channels. If you switch the Lead/Clean channel switch to the down position, you will be on the Lead channel. To adjust the volume for the Lead channel, check out the Pre-Gain and Post-Gain knobs. Pre-gain will essentially adjust how much distortion you want, while the Post-gain will control the overall volume for the Lead channel. And again, to adjust the Equalization for the lead channel, that's going to be on the right hand side of the amp(1 up/down switch which sets the overall EQ tone to Modern or Vintage, and 3 knobs-low, mid, high).
Matt Linnemann hey dude that helped heaps but I can’t find the right equalization for clean and lead I have a Ibanez electric guitar and honestly it sounds so trash but apparently good amp settings will help so what would you suggest with the low mid and high for lead and clean and the modern and vintage sorry to waste ur time I’m still learning thank you and also ur guitar sounds epic
For the clean channel, I prefer to have the EQ set to Modern, and the low, mid, and high knobs basically set right in the middle(12 o clock). Start with that. 9 times out of 10 it will sound decent. You can tweak each knob one at a time to sort of hear what it does if you feel like changing it. For the lead channel, I would start with the EQ knobs in that same position-12 o clock, but I prefer the Vintage setting. I like the pre-gain set at about half way up(12 o clock) for rock tones and almost all the way up for solos and stuff like that. Post-gain will adjust your volume for the lead channel.
One of these going for about £20 in my area. I don't get money till next week. After seeing this I hope its still there. Seems an OK little starter amp for that price
Thats an unreal price for a working one. It might be noisy. The capacitors go bad and cause buzz and hum. If you are competent at soldering, its neither difficult, nor expensive to refurbish these.
@@kramalerav yes I mean this amp. The lead channel sounds much better with the pre-gain dialled back between 4-7. Clean or light distortion (blues) is best for this amp. Full pre-gain this amp sounds like a box of wasps.
I have this amp. The clean channel is much quieter than the lead channel, and sounds pretty weak, ok for quiet practice if you just want to hear your guitar and don't care about the poor tone but its pretty useless. The lead channel sounds really harsh full gain but it does sound nice clean or low gain, when the transtube seems to work nicely and has lots of depth to the sound.
I have one. Its the transtube version. Not enough gain and has no effects at all just 3 band eq. Really boring amp with no reverb or delay or anything.
This one is Transtube Series as well. I prefer it for recording where I can double track rhythms, add delay/reverb in post to leads, etc. Useful for jamming in a small room with another guitarist as well, the distorted tones are very decent. I tried miking it up to a P.A. system at band practice once with full band- kinda goofy idea, but it held up pretty nicely from what I remember. Could add some effects pedals for spice.
