    Back around 2001, I was fortunate enough to get stuck behind two old-and-busted Chevy S10s doing 55MPH, right next to each other, blocking traffic on I-20. Nobody in front of them, hundreds of cars stuck behind them. I put on my asshole hat, took an exit, passed them on the access road and got back on in front of them. (I miss that car.) I slowed way down (not a brake check, just slowing down to create an opening) and, magically, cars started flowing through the newly created opening and the situation resolved itself.
    I'm not particularly proud of that, but: intentionally creating a traffic jam because one finds it entertaining is selfish and dangerous. In retrospect, now in my 40s, I'm a little surprised that I didn't get shot. #Texas.

One of my primary goals as a safe driver is to stay out of the way as much as possible while trying to get where I want to go. I believe that, in general, if you're obstructing traffic, you're part of the problem.
    I learned to drive from my father, who was a trucker and a member of the Teamsters Union. If you didn't benefit from that kind of influence in your life, please trust professional drivers when they say it's not OK to hog the left lane. If you don't trust them, please refer to the government-posted signs on the side of the highway saying "Slow Traffic Keep Right." And always assume that YOU are slow traffic unless you're actively passing somebody.

    The left lane is a passing lane, at least in NC, it's actually stated in the drivers ed handbook. Unfortunately you do have to look for it, but it is there. It's this way for flow of traffic but most importantly so that emergency vehicles can have ease of access to the left lane, in the event of an emergency.

      NC drivers are so used to their interstates being terrible, especially in the right lane, that I find there to be more left lane bandits there than anywhere other than the Florida Turnpike. They've fixed the roads, mostly, including that hellscape that was I-40 from Asheville to Hickory, but people still have "right lane bumpy" stuck in their heads apparently.

If they survived that, they would have a greater awareness and appreciation of of how to drive safely. The left lane is for passing unless there's 3+ lanes, then the right lane is the slow lane and the left lanes are for contested passing. Keep it safe as long as you are within legal permitted speeds. Always check your state's drivers manual. Some allow more passing speed than others. I don't encourage road rage and I don't encourage driving on the shoulder over the white line and I'm too scared to do it even if it's a lane wide.

    I drive like everybody is aiming for me. No, I don't really think like that. But it sure helps with the situational awareness. Most people didn't learn to drive in an area that has a very large retirement community. Who do not give a rip what lane their in or how fast they are going. Best thing to do is pass them in whatever lane is clear. Because that Cadillac(in the old days) would win the gross tonnage war. Waiting for that boat to get out of your way, well when one is speeding. The heck with the rules, the speed limit was 55 MPH. Grandpa is doing at least 10 below that.
    Trains are great for cargo, not for people. That day has come and gone. If I wanted to get on Amtrak, well. the nearest stop is about an hour south(Casa Grande), or 2.5 hours to the north(Flagstaff). I live in a major metropolitan city(Phoenix), they closed the stop somewhere back in the 1990's(yes, a government supported entity closed something). When you live in a very large state/city, rail coverage isn't practical. Maintaining thousands of miles track was pretty expensive. Especially when the old streamline steamers would be cruising over 100 MPH.

    • @soul-heart
      @soul-heart Год назад +2

      I got to be honest with you, trains can be just as good for people as for cargo. I think you really should ask yourself why over 100yrs ago the US used to be the leader in passenger rail, having not just some sort of metro in most cities, but also street cars, and rail between cities, all along with rail for cargo and now we're not?
      There really is no difference between rail for cargo and people because people are essentially cargo. And no ones shocked the government shut down that station, which likely was sparsely used, in a low population area (comparatively), making prices go up causing lower ridership and a negative feedback loop to it's own demise. Amtrak also shares with freight so it makes an already out of date, inefficient system, even more unattractive.
      The problem isn't rail itself. Often in large cities like Boston, NYC, Chicago, etc. it is more efficient to take the city metro than a car. The problem is how, especially after WWII, the US was designed to make society to sprawl out because people were convinced that having a plot of land far from everyone will be great, and for the time it might have been, but it didn't account for population growth, or many of the problems we face now. US zoning laws don't exactly play nice if you want to design a city that is densely populated, mostly walkable, and has easy access to rail lines. Our whole society is set up dependent on the car that even our attempts to have rail outside of the city metro requires a car and a massive parking lot that isn't close or safe to walk to.
      And your point about maintaining rail is expensive is kind of moot when the US has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the interstate system alone, not accounting the hundreds of thousands of roads in all of our cities. If people are ok with spending that kind of money on our roads why can't the US create a national rail system that actually does a good job. I live in the northeast and rarely do I ever see rail needing to be repair, but every year I see hundreds of roads needing to be repaved. I'd rather have another option for transportation than to hope Houston will expand it's highways again only for it to be backed up because of induced demand, see hundreds of miles of land be used in efficiently, displacing even more people and businesses, and our tax dollars be put to waste for our car dependent society. As I said rail isn't inefficient it's how US society was made that made rail be inefficient. Don't get me wrong I love cars, but I really hate how my ability to travel in the US is mostly dependent on a car, especially when I was in HS and didn't have a license.

Hell, if I didn’t have to drive to work I wouldn’t, and I would just drive for fun.

    I am very curious what the logic and mentality is of the people that camp in the left lane. HEY CAREER LEFTIES, It is not a speed limit thing at all. The roads are designed to work and function a certain way, period! It is by definition and design designated the “PASSING LANE” by the Department of Transportation(s), not the “fast lane”, not the “I don’t like to change lanes” lane, not the “I can relax and do not have to pay attention lane”, not the “I have a lefthand exit 387 miles ahead so I will just stay over here” lane, or the worst… “I can scroll through my phone, keep tabs on my social media and take pictures of myself while I am driving” lane! Changing lanes is a foundational part of proper driving. I personally think that bad habits & bad logic comes from improper driver training. We have an epidemic of drivers with bad logic that think they are correct and right. These bad drivers then recycle their very bad and incorrect taught logic & reasoning onto the next generation, and so on and so on…
    I realize that not everyone thinks and processes information the same but, I am very curious why this twisted leftie logic makes sense to people. When I ask this question to people that I personally know, I get some very oblivious, lazy and absurd answers as to why they camp in the left lane. Most of them are just clueless and don’t know any better. From my own research I would say that this bad left lane discipline is a result of incorrect training, laziness and a fear of driving, which probably stems from improper driving skills being taught. In my own observations I would say that the most habitual offenders are females (young ones especially) driving imports. I am always blown away when I see a female in an import that passes and gets back over, AWESOME!!! I can only assume that the male drivers that I see with this bad habit were taught to drive by their mother, sister or grandmother.

      The mentality is easy to understand. It's moral superiority, which spawns self-entitlement. Despite there being laws, their narcissism tells them they don't have to move over and let somebody else speed. Pass them on the right, they get pissed anyway. And, they'll get pissed at somebody who is left-lane blocking them. This is why Casey has referred to them as SJWs, because the mentality is the same: Elitism, self-righteousness, self-entitlement, and their desire that everybody is aware of their moral superiority (which is why virtue-signaling is so prevalent among them). There is some sort of psychological need for them to stick their nose in other people's business. For instance, if they don't like a certain TV show, they do everything they can to get it canceled. Same with music, books, radio shows, and speeding (hogging the left lane). When normal people don't like a TV show, book, or whatever, they simply don't watch or read it. When normal people don't like speeding, they don't speed. But unlike the SJW/Left-lane-hogs, they don't try to stop others from speeding.
      Also being elitists and narcissists, they can't ever admit to being wrong. They get sore when you tell them they are wrong, they reject the logic of "keep right except to pass", and simple refuse to acknowledge the laws they are breaking, even when you show them the law number and text. Basically, they are like flat-earthers in their mentality, where facts and logic are irrelevant.
