I just saw it last week and I found it to be stunning experience. The final sequence was for me the most intense I have ever seen while virtually nothing was happening! Tilda Swinton is fantastic to watch. She has the capacity for so much power in her presence. Mysterious and intriguing cinema.
Memoria is absolutely knock out ! Nobody in contemporary cinema makes movies like that . Tilda Swinton gives the best performance in her career . Joe is director who developed his own unique film language and I can clearly see him as successor of one of the greatest movie director of all times Andrey Tarkovsky !
I didn't really liked that much, I actually wasn't prepared to be that slow because I didn't realize that I had already watched a movie from the same director. At the end, I found a little too meaningless, I managed to get some ideas, but it didn't feel like the film committed to anything, which I think it is almost a necessity (have a common theme when it is slow movie so you can follow along even when "nothing" is happening). I watched Cemetary of Splendor and I found it much more meaningful, I would recommend Cemetary over Memoria to anyone who likes slow movies.
@@onibabapapa2659 I don't know menss I think this director likes to explore these weird resolutions. I like to think that he doesn't care to give a explanation for the "movie experience" and that is a quick way to finish the plot.
I do too. I’m pretty sure I saw it last week. I just flipped back to see if it was a double upload, and last weeks upload was not there however Mark is wearing a black tie in this video whereas for his Belfast review he is wearing a blue tie so perhaps this is a second time uploading. How ironic that it’s happening for this particular movie!
I watched that one for a film class and hated it (NOT my preferred style so I won't begrudge anyone who does like it) That said, I am intensely intrigued by this film and its limited distribution.
Just saw this Film. Very well made. Very visual storytelling. The cinematography and sound design are great. Acting was well done. It all comes down to wether this ending works for you, but if t doesn't, it is still very much a must watch.
awesome summary of the movie. for the entire length i was trying to determine what exactly was going on. i even abandoned what little grasp of the tale being spun i had in favor of a romance tale. it seemed young Hernan was smitten but also rebuffed by Jessica; then i saw Jessica finding interest in Agnes but no significant connection, and finally with older Hernan who was spell-bounding in speech and behavior and Jessica being draw to his effects. i feel the movie tries to lull you right until the final scene at the window then completely shatters that glass. Its as if Tilda awakens and physically transforms into something so eerie and bizarre and alien and just unsettling all in that one slow moving tilt towards the window. i had no expectations going into the movie but somehow those non-existent expectations were subverted lol great finale and great performance by Tilda, she's wicked cool.
It seemed to be about how we are all operating on different frequencies. Therefore reality is subjective. We don't experience life in the same way. That's why we think everyone else is crazy
Definitely a movie about subjectivity and I daresay about introversion. That's why many found it so odd. Jessica gives importance to something most people would readily discard, because it's completely subjective and it comes from the inside. What's so important in a simple sound when the world is constant noise? Just tune into something lively and forget about it. Perhaps take some Xanax too. And yet the natural world fell silent, much in the same way we can't see the night sky. There's only the disturbance of our frantic interconnected world. Everyone makes a lot of experiences but something is inevitably lost and sacrificed along the way.
I saw this screened at a local theatre not realizing it was going to be 80% spanish and for some reason "it was intended to be viewed without subtitles". Made for a bit of a guessing game as a non-spanish speaker but I still enjoyed it
hah that was crazy, also nicely played off by Mark just goes to show that maybe it isnt as profound as people migth think, but more pointless and trite
I'm an American who will probably never get to see the film with the strange distribution method that's been selected for it, so I can only hope it gets a home video release abroad that I can import.
I'm hoping it comes close enough that I can, but I worry I'm in the same boat. I hope they at least start announcing where it will be playing ahead of time. I'm willing to go out of town, but have to be able to plan.
No you are not crazy. I’m pretty sure this was uploaded last week and then perhaps taken down. You are not the only one mentioning this so don’t worry. It’s just weird that it’s happening for this particular movie😹
@@kermodeandmayo Hello Mark! Huge fan from India. You don't plan to make a video upload of it? I thought all actors were so exceptional in it! Would have loved to know your thoughts...
I always enjoy the comments for something like this because nothing is quite so funny as the anger of a particular type of person who finds that a particular piece of art doesn't work for them. It's the weirdest thing to get your feathers ruffled over instead of just being like "I was clearly not the intended audience and predictably didn't get anything out of it."
Few times during the movie I felt like that man (Huan?) from the last part of the movie - I dozed off. Wish I did it at home because my sofa is much more comfortable than a chair in a cinema, it is free and I would have not contributed to the global warming by burning the gas in my car going to the cinema.
Watched it, intrigued by it but what the hell was it about? Aliens, time slips, soulmates, reincarnation, telepathic communication? I honestly had absolutely no idea what it was all about.
Everyone likes this movie talks about how stuff looks or sounds or how this movie is unique. Im glad it is unique because there is nothing with substance. It hits some people in the feelz I guess.
Argh - I would SO love to see this but the weird distribution thing is killing me. It is going to play one night in my city, but I will actually be out of town that night. Frustrating!
"with a commitment that it would never be available for home viewing" - dude, do you know what century you're living in? Anyone who wants to can watch it right this second.
I don’t a agree. A massive part of the film is the sound design and unless you have the right setup, and assuming the digital transfer even manages to preserve the quality you’re never going to experience the film properly.
@@kevycanavan Well obviously all movies are better in a theater. But I wasn't making a point about quality. The quote was 'It will never be available for home viewing'. But it is if you know where to look.
Just because a movie is packed with excrutiatingly long static and silent shots with good framing doesn't mean it's "contemplative". This snoozefest is utterly pretentious, with stiff acting and quasi-poetic dialogue. The talented Tilda Swinton is thrown in front of the camera with nothing to say or do beyond looking catatonic and occasionally murmuring some half-baked line. Do you wanna see a real contemplative film? Watch Bergman's The Silence, Kore-eda's Maborosi or DeBlois' Heima, but avoid this dull vanity project at all costs.
For me and I'm just going to be brutally honest, it was truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Yes, the director can do a decent job of capturing atmosphere and Tilda Swinton absolutely knocked it out of the park with what she had but the problem is, she didn't have much. The plot and story here are some of the worst I've ever seen. To put this in a little bit of perspective, it's as if amateur art school student tried to replicate a meta journey of finding one's self similar to Denis Villenueve's/Jose Saramago's Enemy just with a South American twist. I imagine a movie like that is hard to pull off to start with which is why Enemy is such a great movie. But this movie just gets crushed under the kind of weight it tried to lift. I haven't seen any of Apichatpong's other movies but after seeing this one, I'll definitely pass of the others. 2/10 movie for me. Have no idea why Neon let a movie like this see the light of day.
