    here is a better method to obtain a clean face of the fibre.
    1. get a steel tube with slightly larger id than the fibre od (like a medical syringe needle).
    2 apply some epoxy adhesive on the fibre and insert it into the steel tube
    3. allow the epoxy to cure. the end of the fibre is now well supported and rigid.
    4 use fine polish paper and polish off the face square.
    finer the polish paper grade (2000 grit or better), cleaner, more square (face at a right angle to the axis) the face of the fibre giving a narrower and sharper beam
    and you won't accidentally damage the end in use. you can clamp it without worring of breakage

    I mistakenly called the buffer the cladding. The buffer is the plastic protective layer around the glass fiber which I strip off. Here is more info on fiber optics: www.thefoa.org/tech/ref/basic/fiber.html

    I can see no sign of light through my fiber
