Imagine my joy of after watching your performance, and recognizing my discovery of the benchmark of how this song could and should be played on a mandolin. Genuinely lovely! As a late in life new to instrument mandolin student, who is still beginning the climb up mandolin mountain, it is satisfying to know in time I may approximate what you demonstrated so well. At least I hope. Thanks very much.
This was my grandfathers favourite fiddle song. I played it for him when he took his last breathes and this brings back all the memories of him, well done.
What a beautiful sounding Mandolin. I'm learning this piece at the moment and listening to many different versions, but this is the purest sounding I've found; it truly touches my soul. Now I have found you, I can listen and watch all your videos. Thank you for sharing your beautiful music.
I have been contemplating learning an instrument for the first time in my life (33yo), I had earmarked the Mandolin as my instrument of choice and now having heard one of my favourite songs of all time played so beautifully on the Mandolin this was dthe push I needed to kick-start my musical journey. Thanks for a beautiful rendition of this iconic song.
I started my musical journey (at 30 yrs) after putting away my trumpet in 9th grade... I called my dad to inquire about swnding it to me in the Army... "sold it for $40 at the yard sale"...came the reply. I was disheartened, but went down to the local music store anyway...i walked out with a $10 pennywhistle- which led to bodhran drum, then Native Flutes, then Irish Flute, congas, strumstick, Appalachian dulcimer, bones/spoons, fiddle, then guitar- my latest of 6 years. Now its time for Mandolin! Got an F style Ibanez 722 arriving tomorrow! Then, for my Christmas present, Octave Mandolin! So for the past 25 years Ive been a performer. Bottom line? Its NEVER too late...until its too late. 😢 So good luck to you on your journey! Its opened up a lot of doors and friendships...And remember! Its not a race, there ARE asshole musicians, and plenty of them are far left hippie dippies too! So take them with a grain of salt...and be helpful to the newbies...dont cop an attitude. 😂
Wow! I am stunned! This is now my favorite version of this song. Absolutely beautiful. I can play two beginner songs on mando, this inspires me to keep at it and someday be a fraction of how good you are! Thanks for sharing!
Feels like saying farewell and coming home all at the same time. That great chord change and the melody over top it has always made this song memorable, but your playing, phrasing and arrangement really does it justice. Excellent work and nice mando :)
Several years ago I received the box set of the series and this song came on and I completely lost it and balled for an hour. You completely do it Justice.
Your playing is soulful. The arrangement is beautiful and inspiring to me. I first heard this song a few days ago and was taken back by its calmness and emotion. Been working on transcribing the song since then. Your arrangement will keep me busy for days. Thank you for sharing.
Nice job. It was the song that inspired me to take on the violin and brought a tear or two to my eye the first time I put it together. Been playing it ever since. I have seen many others play Ashokan Farewell. This was the first Mandolin version I have heard. Love it.
This is probably my favorite version of Ashokan Farewell. Huge fan of your channel and you give me that little kick in the butt to keep practicing on my mando. Thanks a mill!
I'm working on this song with a friend. He's doing it for his kids as a Xmas gift. I like you're version the very BEST! Nova Scotia will do you proud with a two guitar version. Thanks Frank for your help!!!
Bravo! Nice rendition. I play an A model and I'm learning the melody to Ashoken Farwell. I'll next incorporate tremolo and chords to give it that fullness like you do. Ps I'm 67yo. Greeting from StL by way of Pinellas county.
I had to break out my mandolin and play the harmony line on this one. Just like I thought, it sounds as beautiful on two mandolins as it does on two violins.

@@nancyanneberg403 Thanks Nancy!
Wonderful. It's really a fiddle tune, but you make it come alive on the mandolin.
Thanks!!!
Of course fiddle tunes weren’t written for just fiddles, they were written on fiddles because they were handy.
What a beautiful sounding Mandolin. I'm learning this piece at the moment and listening to many different versions, but this is the purest sounding I've found; it truly touches my soul.
