Just Stop seems to be approaching everything he makes videos on from a generally cynical perspective, which I think a screenname like Just Stop would make pretty clear, essentially saying that to those who make entertainment that he finds frustrating. Implicitly Pretentious is more even-handed, not shying away from saying something negative if he feels something warrants it, but not centering his channel around cynicism or negativity. I definitely wish that the former type of critic was more willing to engage with the latter type, and maybe they can, but it often seems like the former kind would rather just stay in their bubble.

Diabolical is a very special spinoff that doesn't really feel like it shares the same vibe as its main series as it has its own unique charm but still managed to sell this pessimistic nature that pertains in the financially corrupt dehumanizing world of the Boys. Still, I hope if there is a 2nd season for this then they further build on these stories with a more cohesive tone across the episodes.
My favourite is the one with the Numidians and the divorce where I think you missed the focus of the episode. I think the episode was focused on toxic relationships and how "the spark" isn't enough to make up for deeper underlying issues and lack of communication, compromise and one's willingness to deal with past traumas and personal troubles. The kid was trying to rekindle the spark between her parents. And she succeeded. However, contrary to what romantic movies make us believe, that isn't enough to give them a happy ending as they were simply incompatible. This also serves, in my opinion, as a small coming-of-age story for the girl, as she becomes disillusioned with the happyly ever after story. Where at the start she thought "love" was enough to keep to people together, in the end, she learns and accepts that a relationship requires work and maturity, two things her parents don't have. This way, instead of leaving the episode on a "oh no, what about the true victims of the divorce, the children?" note, it leaves us on a hopeful one as we're shown that the girl is smart and mature so we can rest assure that she won't repeat their mistakes and will have, when the time comes, a good marriage.

The show The Boys is one of those few examples where the adaptation is arguably better than the source materual. Maybe that's just me, but I much prefer people being dicks and absolute bastards to each other for an actual purpose of attempting meaningful social commentary instead of people being terrible as a punchline in and of itself like in the comics. The world needs less cynicism and nihilism, not more of it, and if it does exist, it should at least be used for some other constructive purpose.
I disagree a lot. The changes that they've done was stupid and while some aspects were better, others were far worse like making Soldier Boy the father of Homelander. I think the adaptation we should've gotten was similar to that of I'm Your Pusher.

Mostly because they have really well animated action sequences and they both feel like they use more interesting plot elements then the other episodes.

I genuinely hated the akwafina episode. I cringed the whole way through, hoping for something cool to happen at the end or something. it didn't. 1/10 episode (I know it was supposed to be stupid but I dont care)
it was supposed to be stupid, but they somehow even screwed that up. You can't just make a cringy thing and then say "no we did it on purpose, you have to laugh", you still have to make it funny. Making something purposefully bad yet still enjoyable to watch is difficult, and ig Awkwafina didn't have the skills required to pull it off
This might be what you mean anyway, but i really feel that (although i had my issues with the finale) the finale confirmed his investment in noir, that's why he felt *so* betrayed. Although it felt like a waste of noirs story, it made sense character wise.
@@bigvidboi4909 I enjoyed all the seasons as a good animation showcase (technical) though the narrative on a lot of them is incomplete or ends just as it begins.
The Awkwafina episode was unbearable to watch, and I legit regret sitting through it. The whole joke in this episode is that a turd came to life... Listen, I appreciate some mindless toilet humor every once in a while, but this was an absolute overkill. The poop is alive, WE GET IT! Also, the anime style was making me cringe the entire time, but that's personal.

Hate is a strong word. I like them a lot. I understand if people prefer the show because their sensitivities or preferences aren't the same as other people in terms of morally cynical content, but hating it just because it challenges the mainstream appeal and takes a different approach to its values and storytelling that most media companies wouldn't dare to produce is kinda dumb.
Ennis works best with somebody to hold him back. On the boys comic, he had little, if any, editorial oversight, and because of that, it ended up unnecessary and unpleasant. I’m sure there was some oversight from somebody at Amazon (or at least consideration for Amazon’s standards). This episode was the best thing to come out of the comic, probably ever.
@@vivimos_en_una_sociedad7758 I don't hate it cuz it challenges the mainstream appeal. It's cuz they are inferior to the show in every way. They entirely rely on shock value. But I have heard that the boys comic gets better as it goes on. I only read the first volume

I’d rather just watch an entire animated series of The Boys by Garth Ennis. Awkwafina needs to not be around any more creative projects in general, in person or otherwise. She is garbage. Why was she allowed to ruin The Boys Diabolical AND Shang Chi?
garth ennis is a good writer but the show is leagues better than the comic. the comic is full of needless edgniness while it all serves a purpose in the show with way better character development. also awkwafina is hardly that bad. what did she do to be considered garbage? make some stuff u dont like? i didnt like her episode here but she hardly ruined shang chi

But making us sit throught a full 20 minutes of those powers, with an unlikeable character attached to them, just a horrible idea I don't understand how anyone signed off on

I agree on Ep 2 being the worst! I liked the beginning but ultimately couldn't even finish it. I'm usually on board with all the gore of The Boys-verse but that one... I have to admit was just a little too disturbing. 😣
I'm actually glad The series took a different direction than the comics but all the same, it was enjoyable to see an unfiltered/unchanged version of the comics written by the creator. It even does some fun things like having Simon Pegg voice Hugie (almost as if it was always intended this way). And yes, I believe Jason Isaacs could have definitely played Butcher just as well as Karl Urban could have (both are brilliant actors). Though my favorite episode has to be Nubian Prince and Nubia's episode. That one is just really funny and cynical, backed up my masterful voice acting from John DiMaggio, Aiesha Keys, and Don Cheedle. There is charm to most episodes except the one by Awkafina. Not even hilarious D-Bag loser "The Deep" could save that one.
I really like how the show has animation from Invincible and Rick and Morty and even animation that looks like you’d see from a kids show for this show. Shows that animation doesn’t always have to be for children

You just managed to help me enjoy this series. I tried watching it when it released and hated it, but your "an serious review" actually brought life into the show in a capacity that I couldn't have found on my own
Am I the only one who thinks it's ironic that the creators of the show hired a bunch of high-up celebrities to work on the show? It's like they missed the point of the whole series
The beautiful one is one of my favorite pieces of animated anything ever. It hurts every time I watch it. I wished my dad had fought at all against his cancer and didn't just give up and die.
Awkwafina's episode was just painful the whole way through. There was nothing about it that I enjoyed. Everything was gross, the plot was shit (literally), and all the characters sucked.
it really needed a twist ending, that's the only thing that could have made the episode bearable. Like take the ending from the cream episode and put it in that, where just as stuff is going good for the character have them die some horrible way, wouldn't have completely redeemed the episode, but at least it would give the episode a single funny moment
I'll be honest, when I watched Diabolical, I just saw it as what people *think* The Boys is about rather than what the show is *actually* about. However, your video has made me tempted to re-watch the show and has given me a new angle to look at the show - I haven't read the original comics, particularly after hearing the show was actually an improvement to it's source material, but I might pick one up (at some point) to see for myself, now. Surprising video but very interesting nonetheless and thank you for highlighting some themes/readings I didn't pick up upon, prior.
I liked the one Ennis wrote and I liked the one about the little girl who gets a villian killed in order to get her parents to screw again, I thought that was funny. Also the first episode was fun because of the animation.
If the guy didn't say that ironcast used to drink that blood to "Feel their despair", i would think of that as a good or at least decent act. I mean, i doubt that blood coming from terminal patients could be reused for transfusions (Unless there's any way to "purify" it) so it would be a waste of space to keep that much uselessly gathered in a blood bank.
Amazing review. As someone who has never watched the comics and this show in digital form, this was amazing take on a very differnt way of looking at the boys and analyzing its meaning
every time i watch something written by andy samberg it’s either the most beautiful, heartwarming, wholesome thing ever made or so funny i piss my pants
I didn’t care for this, as I was waiting for Season 3 and only enjoyed the third episode and LOVED Jason Isaacs as Butcher as well as seeing Simon Pegg voice Hughie.
The only ones I really liked were I'm Your Pusher and One Plus One Equals Two. It was cool to see an episode based off of the comics (and is even canon to it!) and another showing how Homelander failed to be a hero. We should've gotten more like those two, but the one I disliked the most was Boyd In 3D and BFFs. Boyd In 3D was a cheesy and dumb love story that doesn't fit the story of the show or comic and BFFs was just poop jokes galore. The others were alright or boring to me, I liked how In Nubian Vs Nubian we got to see characters from the comics that haven't been in the show yet, AKA the G-Men members (Nubia and Groundhawk)
For real, I remember sitting on the couch with my friends, sobbing through the end of episode 7, only to scream when I saw "Written by Andy Samberg". Never in my life would I have guessed he could do something like that...
I think the ending of episode 7 is her death. More or less, the whole episode is her trying to lessen the weight of grief on her husband. Show him how brave she is, basically. Now, to be fair, I haven't watched diabolical, but still.
It’s interesting how each episode resembles a completely different show. Some styles I recognized, some I didn’t. Does this mean that these are all self contained stories? Marvel like alternate scenarios? It’s giving me a lot of questions…
I agree that everyone has different opinions, and what I like certainly wouldn't be what everyone else would like, but I have to say that the Awkwafina one was my least favourite out of the bunch. I mean, yeah the living poop part was weird, but I had many more issues as well. 1)The humour was sometimes good, sometimes bland, not quite to the same standard as the other episodes. 2) Unlike the other episodes of Diabolical (and The Boys franchise in general) this one had almost NO violence at all. That in itself isn't too bad, but even the one single scene that had gore (the shark eating the man) felt needless and forced, as it it was added not because it served as a logical part of the story, but just so that the audience wouldn't complain about the lack of violence. 3) The Deep's character in this episode was almost nothing at all like the character in the live action series. Here, the Deep was shown as a generic 'good guy superhero with minor issues' instead of the complicated personal mess that the Deep is in the series (Yes having a shark eat a man alive isn't normal by any means, but like I said earlier, that moment felt forced and in the rest of the episode it doesn't seem like the deep has any personal issues or coml. To me, it felt as if the two shared almost nothing with each other. I'll describe the Awkwafina episode as something that was written by a person who has never seen a single episode of The Boys and only seen a couple stills and heard about the characters from some random dude on the street.
Everyone saying that nothing happened in episode 4. In pretty sure it did. The last scene was just a cut to the future (probably a couple days later) where the side affects finally catch up with him. I guess it was supposed to be funny? That he and the girl has a whole arc but, like the beginning of the episode stated, it’ll have side affects. Which were reminded of at the end, cuz he did take a fuck ton. I’m assuming it happened to the girl too💀
I thought it was cool that the Ennis episode was written as if it were in the comic universe, so in that way it was cool to see and hear the characters from the comics on screen.
Shouldn't the last parts of the title be "a serious review" since the word "serious" starts with a consonant sound? Genuine question, just curious. (Or perhaps the joke is that it's not a serious reveiw, hence the grammatical error.)
Honestly what pissed me off the most about the Awk one wasn't the shit jokes, or her voice, it was that god damn style. Like it was attempting to be anime by exaggerating facial expressions every 3 seconds and making everything all "cutesy". It felt forced to me, idk.
It’s kinda ironic the episode that had the least substance was the episode written by Garth Ennis, hell even the poop episode had a moral. A bit of a shame since I’ve seen Ennis’ work on ‘The Boys : Dear Becky’ which shows he’s clearly grown slightly as creator but as cool looking as that episode was, it’s pretty shallow in comparison and unfortunately reverts to Ennis’ need of using shock violence and crass humour to actually make his stories interesting. And that is saying a lot because this was paired up WITH THE AWKAFINA POOP EPISODE.
I'm glad *someone* on this planet is willing to defend BFF's. I thought it was funny, definitely weird and gross, but the live-action show pulls that stuff all the time (crushing someone's skull by sitting on their face, snapping their penis off by freezing it, MM getting choked by a penis taller than himself, etc). People get very hateful and toxic over this episode, and I think it's completely unwarranted. It's fine if it's someone's least favorite, but there's no reason to get hateful over it.
yes, but here's the difference. The popclaw skull crush lasted about 30 seconds, the penis freezing off bit was mentioned in 2 lines, the penis choke was one scene. This shit power was AN ENTIRE EPISODE. That shit power could have worked if it was the length of the other stuff you mentioned, trying to make it work for an entire episode however just makes it cringy instead of funny. Take any one of those things you mentioned and try to make an entire episode out of them, it loses the humour. I wouldn't watch an episode based on the guy who gets his dick frozen off, I will laugh at the guy mentioning it though. I'm not gunna watch a full 20 minute long episode of popclaw sitting on a guys face until his head explodes, but I'll laugh at the short scene it happens in. See the difference?
It's a decent show and I think another season is still worth investing in. They got an idea of what people like/don't like, and can bring even better stories than before. More of Episode 7 would be nice, but I imagine it took up most of the shows budget. It'd also be nice to get short stories right from the comic.

Indeed.
Even if you do understand, the episode is just unfunny and boring as hell

The show The Boys is one of those few examples where the adaptation is arguably better than the source materual. Maybe that's just me, but I much prefer people being dicks and absolute bastards to each other for an actual purpose of attempting meaningful social commentary instead of people being terrible as a punchline in and of itself like in the comics. The world needs less cynicism and nihilism, not more of it, and if it does exist, it should at least be used for some other constructive purpose.
arguably? nah the show is way fucking better and it’s not even close

I'm really surprised the Aquafina episode is your favorite, no offence but I think it's easily the worst episode.
Personally I didn't like the humour that much, I don't care much for having 'learn to love yourself' as the main plotpoint because I think it's boring and perdictable once the premise is set-up, plus I find Aquafina kind of annoying.
I think the homelander episode is the best, then probably episode 7 or something. Mostly because they have really well animated action sequences and they both feel like they use more interesting plot elements then the other episodes.

Idk if this is a hot take or not but i think that the Aquafina episode was the worst one compared to the other ones. It felt very lazily written probably because it's written by Aquafina. Although I do have my bias cuz I don't like Aquafina in general, didn't like her in Rya and I don't like her music.
Making something purposefully bad yet still enjoyable to watch is difficult, and ig Awkwafina didn't have the skills required to pull it off
Episode 7 genuinely made me cry, which was one of the things I expected the least when going into this show.
Damn, rewatched this video a year later not knowing I watched it already and seeing a few clips of the episode made me cry again. Such a good episode.
The commentary after that last finale regarding the Homelander and Noir short hits different
This might be what you mean anyway, but i really feel that (although i had my issues with the finale) the finale confirmed his investment in noir, that's why he felt *so* betrayed. Although it felt like a waste of noirs story, it made sense character wise.

I definitely prefer the emotional, explicitly political show
Hate is a strong word.
@@vivimos_en_una_sociedad7758 nah it’s the fact that the comic at times was needlessly edgy
@@vivimos_en_una_sociedad7758 The comic may as well have been written over razors, because of how edgy it is.

But making us sit throught a full 20 minutes of those powers, with an unlikeable character attached to them, just a horrible idea I don't understand how anyone signed off on
From best to worst, in my opinion:

-Episode 8, One Plus One Equals Two (8.5/10)
-Episode 3, I'm Your Pusher (7.5/10)
-Episode 6, Nubian vs Nubian (7/10)
-Episode 4, Boyd in 3D (7/10)
-Episode 1, Laser Baby's Day Out (6.5/10)
-Episode 5, BFFs (3/10)
-Episode 2, An Animated Short Where Pissed Off Supes Kill Their Parents (2/10)
Episode 2 over Episode 1 and 5
I agree on Ep 2 being the worst! I liked the beginning but ultimately couldn't even finish it. I'm usually on board with all the gore of The Boys-verse but that one... I have to admit was just a little too disturbing. 😣
An serious review

Awkwafina's episode was just painful the whole way through. There was nothing about it that I enjoyed. Everything was gross, the plot was shit (literally), and all the characters sucked.
I strongly agree!!! It was disgusting. The only part i enjoyed was when she fought the Deep but that was because i loved seeing this happen to him
Agree
it really needed a twist ending, that's the only thing that could have made the episode bearable. Like take the ending from the cream episode and put it in that, where just as stuff is going good for the character have them die some horrible way, wouldn't have completely redeemed the episode, but at least it would give the episode a single funny moment
"Episode 3 was good because it was close to the comic but bad because it didn't have much depth" you just said the same reason that it was bad twice
I’d love more shorts exactly like episode 3
I'll be honest, when I watched Diabolical, I just saw it as what people *think* The Boys is about rather than what the show is *actually* about. However, your video has made me tempted to re-watch the show and has given me a new angle to look at the show - I haven't read the original comics, particularly after hearing the show was actually an improvement to it's source material, but I might pick one up (at some point) to see for myself, now. Surprising video but very interesting nonetheless and thank you for highlighting some themes/readings I didn't pick up upon, prior.

The aquafina one was the worst episode and almost made me drop the whole show.
It’s interesting how each episode resembles a completely different show. Some styles I recognized, some I didn’t. Does this mean that these are all self contained stories? Marvel like alternate scenarios? It’s giving me a lot of questions…
The only one that’s cannon is the last one
@@mayonnaise3959 the one with butcher and hughie is also canon for the comics
Terminal Velocity looks like it had Invincible animation
Everyone saying that nothing happened in episode 4. In pretty sure it did.
The last scene was just a cut to the future (probably a couple days later) where the side affects finally catch up with him.
I guess it was supposed to be funny? That he and the girl has a whole arc but, like the beginning of the episode stated, it’ll have side affects. Which were reminded of at the end, cuz he did take a fuck ton.
I’m assuming it happened to the girl too💀
I thought the final episode was so good because I don’t think we’ve ever seen a scene where a super hero trying to save people goes wrong.
Episode 6 was so bitter and mean-spirited, I hated it. But I can't say that it isn't a realistic depiction of Black relationships.
I thought it was cool that the Ennis episode was written as if it were in the comic universe, so in that way it was cool to see and hear the characters from the comics on screen.
I skipped to the homelander episode but after watching this I'm gonna start from the beginning after work
Shouldn't the last parts of the title be "a serious review" since the word "serious" starts with a consonant sound? Genuine question, just curious.
(Or perhaps the joke is that it's not a serious reveiw, hence the grammatical error.)
Thank you for saying something, that shit triggered me🤣
Honestly what pissed me off the most about the Awk one wasn't the shit jokes, or her voice, it was that god damn style. Like it was attempting to be anime by exaggerating facial expressions every 3 seconds and making everything all "cutesy". It felt forced to me, idk.
Its more like Steven universe than...'anime'
I love the mistype in the title
Ep 7 I found super sad due to my recent discovery of attachment
Can we talk about how Deep just barged into her room? Hilarious
Man i wish we had a whole show made like episode 3
i'm glad garth enis got to write an episode, i really like the boys comics
I'm glad *someone* on this planet is willing to defend BFF's. I thought it was funny, definitely weird and gross, but the live-action show pulls that stuff all the time (crushing someone's skull by sitting on their face, snapping their penis off by freezing it, MM getting choked by a penis taller than himself, etc). People get very hateful and toxic over this episode, and I think it's completely unwarranted. It's fine if it's someone's least favorite, but there's no reason to get hateful over it.
The problem is that it’s not funny
yes, but here's the difference.

I don't know what made me cry the most, Episode 7 for the amazing story or Episode 5 for the shit jokes.
