She never set him up or anything like that. He viewed Julia not coming as the betrayal. He felt abandoned. But she didn't betray him really. On the contrary, she didn't come to protect him (and as a consequence endangered herself and gave up her chance at freedom). However, the irony is that her absence from Spike's life is also what broke Spike. He couldn't ever be free without her. So he lived in a sort of purgatory, longing for the day when he would see her again.

spike was heartbroken. that’s it, the way he acted was how we dealt with that heartbreak. his situation with julia had hurt him far enough that nothing else could like that anymore. leaving him to be this cold, soft spoken and sad yet determined and almost invincible cowboy. everyone deals with it in different ways and that’s just how spike did
U, know the coolest thing about that is rewatching it again when you're older! It's like seeing it again for the first time since you understand so much more about what's going on. I did that with Ghost in the shell. 12 yrs, 17yrs, and 24yrs. Each time understanding more of it.

I had to find out that he had a very tragic case today. It was a very shocking moment in my life. I needed something to calm down. I love storytelling. So I turned on Netflix. no tiene nada que ver con el vídeo pero debo desahogarme, una morra que me gustaba, pues en ese entonces no superaba a su ex y pues un día salimos unos amigos incluidos ella y su ex, y todo bien hasta que ya todos se iban yo me fui con un compa y ella se fue con su ex, pos yo estaba jodiendo con el sobre que se iban a besar y mas webadas, luego de eso cuando llego a mi casa veo un mensaje de ella diciendo si estaba bien y que no les haga caso (yo en ningún momento mostré cosas que demuestren estar triste o algo) ahí fue cuando supe que algo paso, decidí ver un rato esta serie de nuevo y pues al salir esta escena ver a spike sostener el ramo y ver como este se cae describía un poco como me sentía nunca, llore por amor ya desde antes varias chicas me gustaron y supe que tuvieron pareja cuando me gustaban y nunca llore o solo me ponía a ver series para olvidar, pero ese día ver esa escena lo única que hice fue ponerme a llorar y nada mas solo hice eso llore un vergo no sabia que me pasaba solo estaba llorando por una chica , tiempo después pues de la perra nada comenze a gustarle y pues quería pasar de largo de esa wea, me estaba yendo super bien cuando me dejo de gustar y pues unos weones me convencieron de que le diga que seamos pareja, no sentía atracción y pues como ahora estoy con ella, mis amigos me dicen que es mala persona o que me separe, puedo darles la razón ellos si me vieron cuando estaba deprimido mientras que los weones que me obligaron a confesarme solo endiosaban al weon por besarse con su ex teniendo novia, y pues actualmente sigo con ella solo que sigo sin hacer caso a mis amigos de que ella no es buena para mi y todo lo que sufrí por ella, hoy su ex me dijo que lamentablemente no me termina porque se ve que no me quiere, los weones que me obligaron a confesarse siguen diciendo cosas como que el le dedica poemas o que me va a engañar con el en una fiesta (no soy de que me inviten a fiestas) pues finjo que no me importa pero en realidad siempre sobre pienso y no se que hacer.
I believe the shootout was Spike faking his own death so he and Julia could then meet in the graveyard and leave together some time after. But since Vicious threatened her, she didn't come and so we see Spike leaving with the bouquet, since he figured she wasn't coming after all.
Julia's "betrayal" was breaking Spike's heart/no coming. But she did it to protect him. She was supposed to buy her own life/freedom with Spike's life or they could both be killed. Those were the choices Vicious gave her. Instead of picking either she disappeared. So really, she never betrayed him. She chose him over herself and was then hunted as a consequence. She wanted to save Spike by giving him up, so that he could live and be free. But ironically, this killed Spike in a sense. The worst thing Julia ever did to him, was not be with him. Because he needed her so much. Loved her so much.
@@KomodoRAD I think its the reverse, Spike was waiting for Julia near the graveyard, but since she would be forced to kill him when they met she couldn't come, after hours of waiting and smoking 11 cigarettes he leaves, not knowing whether she's even alive anymore. He knowingly walks in on an ambush, but is clearly not concerned even as he gets shot, he reaches for the C4 detonator and makes a wry smile, he's already dead after all.
There will never be another anime like this again. Sorry, boys and gals. Enjoy your 500+ episode horseshit. Stakes? Meaning? Impactful deaths? Nahhhhh. Just insert forced, redundant chracaters and slap some double D's on them. Evangelion? FLCL? Hellsing? Berserk? Cowboy Bebop? Aw geeze, what did they all have in common....
