    me an a friend swapped a 2.0 into a 2.5 nissan altima in the rain at midnight on dirt with a borrowed engine hoist and only hand tools. enjoy the little things eric. youve got it better than us

    I watched all three videos. This is fantastic. My 04 Cavalier has developed a very bad knock due to oil starvation. My wife never told me the light had come on. It sounds like a popcorn machine. I just got a new Ecotec 2.2 motor and am starting the swap tomorrow. Though this Honda and my chevy are very different, your videos really show this can be done at home and I can save a bunch of money. Thank

    I did the same job in my dirt driveway with a civic lx bought from a lady w/blown engine for 500. (well used a sheet of plywood to set engine on). Took my time & a couple days. Got a japan import low mileage D16A - runs super! The first time installing i did like you - engine & trans. After first test drive i find the lady didn't mention trans was slipping - probably reason motor blown - reving beyond red-line at highway speeds. Anyway, when i got the replacement trans from junkyard i did the remove trans only through bottom of engine bay with car on jackstands. When re-installing i used a crowbar like you are in this vid. It wasn't until I took car to quick-lube for a/c charge they discovered massive trans fluid leak. Yeah I put a hole inside of trans case with my crowbar! Thought long and hard and decided on QUICKSTEEL (a j.b. weld alternative). It's been running fine - now 15K miles later still no leak. BTW, I'm a total diy-er, actually a guitarist not a mechanic so i take my time and watch my fingers. I still watch your vids cause there's always something to learn from the other guy, thanks!

    I really liked the 4 cylinder FWD video for those of us who have this type of engine. I also liked that you went over transfering parts from one engine to the other in such details. Gives me a good understanding of what I'm facing if the engine ever goes in my cavalier.

    Eric - on complicated jobs like engine swaps, I think the narrated clips are really useful. You are actually showing more than you can in a more produced clip. Stay dirty.

    @chillincruisin Depends on what you mean by 'rebuilt', if you didn't check the cylinders for straightness and bore consistency then you probably put good parts in a bad hole, the cylinder walls are just as important as the rings. Break in is also important in a situation like yours, if not done properly you can damage the engine.

    Black and White makes you look slimmer (FYI) LOL . This is one thing I learned from my Dad (RIP) who was an old black and white professional photographer for over 30yrs before he moved into color. Thanks for another great video Eric...I'm learning car stuff that we do not have or do on the Airplanes..

    Great video Eric. I really like the voice over, lets you work and then explain what your doing instead of stopping all the time to explain. Can cover more info in my opinion and lets you focus on what you are doing. Not sure about the black and white but I can live with that! Keep the great videos coming. I've never really thought about fluids in bolt holes before, will start making sure they are cleaned out from now on. Thanks, Scott

    @mrjost55 O2 sensors need to be hot to work correctly, the heater is there to heat them up quickly so that they operate faster and bring the system into what is called 'closed loop' operation. If the heater is bad the O2 will still work but it will take longer to get to temperature.

    @ponch37300 I threw in the B&W at the last moment to mix things up as an experiment as with many experiments they sometimes work and they sometimes don't but it's fun for me to try. The most critical holes to clean out are head bolt holes in a block cause that can cause some nasty problems. Thanks for the comment.

    @jdmfreak92 If you replaced the clutch you will need to use a clutch alignment tool to set the location of the clutch disc, many times clutch kits come with one of these but if you don't have one then I would find the one for your clutch disc and center it up, if not the transmission will never go in.     @TRcustomengineering Heater codes on Honda's almost always mean the sensor is bad, I did check the connections and looked for something else that might have caused the code but couldn't find anything. Thanks for the comment.

    hey eric, neat trick with the fender covers, go buy a handful of neodymium magnets, then put your fender covers where you want em and throw those magnets on top! they are super strong so they'll keep em from sliding all over the place plus, the fabric is underneath it so it protects the paint from scratches, just dont put those magnets straight on any nice paint, they are hard to get off without sliding. PLUS, now you got a nice magnet to put all your loose random fasteners! good times! goodwork

    Thanks Eric for the 3 part video on a 1998 Honda Civic engine replacement. I have been learning about the unique situations that a person comes across with Japanese engineered cars. The end results in wear physics is the difference between North American cars and Japanese. As an example, I started out doing replacing the clutch in the 1998 Civic I bought last fall. The problems I had was over a rusted left side hub bearing spline. Boy, what a problem to get it separated. I made a puller from an outside spare tire bracket that threaded onto the lug nuts and managed to press it the axle spline out. Then afterwards, there was a problem with the hub bearing itself wearing out. (I had to replaced it twice.) In addition, the lower front engine mount was gone. I suppose, If the engine lifts up too many times, it binds the CV axle and tangent forces the hub bearings. I figure, unlike the most of the American FWD's, when it comes to this bit of engineering, there is no graces with the Honda Civics; .In the older American made FWD's you could run the CV bearings out until the axle dropped out on the road, and it more than likely would take out the hub bearings. I really enjoy watching and like your video's. Keep up the good work, Cheers, Leon

    Move master cyl to one side
    By removing 2nuts.
    Move power steer line by removing 2 bolts .
    Unplug 2 wire harness connectors and remove brackets .
    Lift altinator through opening near master cylinder.
    Thats it.
    You dont need to screw with the powertrain .
    I just figured this out and finished it .

    @000030stephen Yes, in fact I would, the key is not to have the engine running when you prime it, the use of pre-lubricant's during assembly helps too.

    About the wiring harness a little tip is to count how many you unplug when removing an engine or trans and then you can count down how many have to be pluged back in. ( 20 unpluged 20 have to be pluged back in!)

    @DYLAN102001 Those engines are famous for leaking at the intake gaskets, I would change those out, drain the oil, put new in and see what you've got.

    On civics. I lift the front of the car with the cherry picker. Then slide the engine underneath with a furniture dolly or a piece of carpet then lower the car until you able to bolt the engine mounts.
    And also I swapped my ej2 d15b7 to a b18b1 under the rain and over mud. Yes the one on my videos. Red ej2.

    @DYLAN102001 Possibly, the thing is when water gets into the oil it doesn't lubricate all that well, perhaps if you got the junk oil out and replaced it with new the noise would go away, if not to be honest I would recommend a replacement engine, it's actually less expensive when you consider the time invested.

    Awesome video series, Eric! You can do voiceovers all you want. I personally find them just as entertaining and informative. I really enjoyed learning what my engine looks like down to the knitty gritty aspects (I have a 98 civic too). It was almost kind weird, though. It was almost like you were working on my car, minus the automatic transmission (stick driver and lovin it!) and weird jury rigging of the exaust.

    @KillerZero259 The sensor isn't bad just the heater in this case but a bad O2 will compromise gas mileage.

    @Bushougoma Yea I think they did around that time, they didn't use them much on the 4 cylinders and not for long really, they are expensive to make after all.

    @alphared11 Good point, when I do a timing belt on these cars I normally put my magnetic tray on the strut tower to hold it is just the way you describe. Thanks for the input and for your comment.

    @Bushougoma Honda uses graphite spherical gaskets instead of a flex pipe on these engines and to be honest I think it's a better system, what you see is what the owner did and there's not much nice I can say about it really. Thanks for the comment.

    Nice work.
    I had the same code come up when i did a topend job on a 96 geo metro, I replaced the o2 sensor and still had the code, i removed some fueses and relays to check them found no bad ones so i put them all back in and reset the code and it was fine don't know how it fixed it self but it was fine and still is to this day.

    @Hondatech26 Thanks for your input. When I do the pay videos I do more detail because it's a pay video, those take a great deal of time to produce however and many people complain that it's a pay video till they buy it of course. I do try to keep a balance and give the audience what they want but within limits I suppose. Thanks for the comment.

    @chillincruisin Honing and boring are 2 different things. If you hone a surface you prepare it for the new rings, if you bore it you are truing it up to eliminate imperfections in the cylinder wall caused by normal wear. You only did half the job by the sound of it. Thrashing it is BS, you don't want to go WOT till at least 500 miles have passed, the normal break in consists of varying engine speed as much as possible, meaning you don't hold at a steady cruse for an extended period.

    hey eric i got one for you i had a 1970 gmc sprint with an 350 lt1 vette engine i started hearing noise from the bottom end it was the main bearings i knew it had new heads but they didn't bother too do the bottom end. i had to have the car to get to work so i pulled the engine out drained the fluids pulled the oil pan off and they were fucked so i removed the timing chain lifted the crank just high enough to push out the old bearings with the new bearings plastigage the 4 main caps came within 1 1/2 thousens put it back together had it ready to go by monday morning i put 40.000 miles on that engine then like an idiot sold it biggest mistake of my life oh well live and learn. love your videos keep em coming.

    Great job Eric.Thanks for taking us along. As usual great video. I think the owner of this particular car should save up some money an get that exhaust fixed properly. You've done a superior job as usual.You are probably right bout the o2 sensor it was bad originally. Take care and hope to see more videos soon.

    @306cabrio16V Hello Germany! Believe me I know the shape of the vehicles here in the states particularly in the state where I live and it's a real hazard not to mention our roads these days. I hate to say it but in many ways as far as the automotive service and repair world goes Germany has a LOT going for it over other places including the US. Thanks for your comment.

    @soadrules366 That car sounds very sick indeed, you might want to address the oil leak first, watch the spark plug well video that I did as it also applies to Civics but before that you might want to check for a head gasket failure, use the Diagnosing an Overheat video for that procedure.     @sean69benny If it's an automatic change it 3 times with a drive in between each time. The trans takes 3 quarts at each change.

    Nice video as always eric. You might wanna put some annotations in to the bleeding cooling system and timing videos. They were a bit hard to find for some reason, and I found them very informative. Thought i had watched all your vids, but it was a treat to see two more new ones in addition to the monday edition!

    thanks eric this was helpful. i just took out a d16y8 out of a 1997 honda kuz the drive plate broke from the crank shaft. but i just left the transmission in and had hard time until i took off the alt. and just a lil wiggle and she droped in good. so thanks for the video you had on here and stay dirty hahaha.

    @writerofwriters69 This video was originally going to be a full length pay video and if I did do the step by step it would have been more of what you would have wanted but it also would have taken me a lot longer to do and you would have had to purchase it from the ETCG site. I decided to shoot it this way instead and I have not regretted that decision. Thanks for the comment.

    @thaik56 Compression can be good but bearings can be worn out causing a loss of oil pressure that can also cause other parts of the engine to fail.

    @aeligos Anything is possible with enough money and time but keep in mind that some things are more trouble than they are worth, it's up to you to decide that however.

    @jdmfreak92 If you aligned the clutch disc properly then it may be a matter of 'wiggling' to get it to go back on IF it's the correct clutch disc, I've gotten the wrong one in the past and as a result I often check to see if it slides onto the input shaft before I install it on the flywheel.

    @lrossi888 My thoughts are don't buy a new car, the deprecation is killer. Instead look for a certified used car as the depreciation is not as bad and most times you get the same warranty as you would if you bought it new.

    @Jx1x3 I would suggest watching the Diagnosing A Cooling System Overheat video that I did as that has some suggestions in it that you might benefit from. To me it sounds like you have air in the cooling system the trick is to find out what is causing that.

    Some people here would rather accessorize/personalize their car than maintain it. People will spend $1000's on chrome spinning rims... and leave the same oil in for 20k miles, or same brakes on until the pads are worn down to the metal.
    Or people buy a car whose purchase price (or monthly payment) maxes out their budget, with no overhead to account for upkeep. Buying a 540i when they should buy a Civic, etc.

    @jeepcherokee40 I should do a video on this but all you have to do is look for the API rating on the label of the bottle, companies cannot legally put that symbol on there unless it's sanctioned by API.

    @hobieslug45 Lastly keep in mind that I drove that van in the day I took the trans apart and had to drive it home which was 30min away, not sure what I was thinking really.

    @maybenextsundAY I'm thinking you had it 180º out, if it's lined up correctly it should slide right in and seat flush with the head. Just take it back out, turn the drive 180º and try again.
