  • As someone who has tendencies of self-isolation, this anime hit close to home. So here's my take on it.
    If you like Haibane Renmei then I have a song suggestion for you:

    Renmei is such a hidden gem, one of the best use of simbolism in a narrative that I've ever seen.

    I have a weird hobby, when I'm sad recently I watch Haibane renmmei reviews bc a lot of them flagrantly miss key details or are comically surface level. I don't know why I enjoy them but I do. With your review I was surprised how insightful you were. I've maybe watched 7 or 8 reviews thus far and I think yours does the best job of really engaging with the material and offering insight, some things that I hadn't thought of myself. What I'm trying to say is, you made a good video!

    This is such a beautiful series. It is very emotionally depressing because every one of these kids died young. It is so sad to think that a girl as young as Reki would commit suicide. What would drive young children to do that?

    • @neetzsche9324
      @neetzsche9324  3 года назад +14

      It's even sadder to consider that suicide among the young has increased drastically over the past decade :_:

      I always assumed Reki was a young adult, maybe University student cuz she was more mature than the rest and also smoked

    The moment I heard Reki say "sin-bound" I knew what she meant. If Reki had made peace with the fact that the other haibane leaving her didn't mean that she was being abandoned, I believe she would have "taken flight" sooner. But of course that's not realistic - this wouldn't be Reki. A person who has been abandoned in the past would be scared of letting go and they would be very harsh towards themselves. So it makes sense for Reki to feel bad whenever a haibane's Day of Flight comes, and for her to feel shame that she can't do it. She can't forgive herself. And that's also connected to the fact that she presumably committed suicide before she became a haibane. She didn't mean any of the things she told Rakka when she was mad in episode 13. People like her choose to live the way they do because they don't know what comfort and happiness feel like. She loved Rakka and the rest of the children she took care of but she didn't want to admit that because she believed she was cursed. In the end she accepted herself and disappeared as a haibane. Haibane Renmei tells a simple story but the way it's told is unconventional and that's great.

    I think rakka may have also committed suicide. She has the sin bound black wings... they explicitly detail this. And she managed to forgive herself , and had the sisterly love of reki and others ...and become clean again, spiritually, during the well/ rebirth/ riddle episode.

    • @neetzsche9324
      @neetzsche9324  3 года назад +2

      There is an implication to this but it's never explicitly detailed. I also think so as well.

      I don't think that Rakka is born with black wings. They are grey, dirty, bloody, but no black stains. What would lead me to that conclusion is her dream, falling, like jumping of some building or a rock. (But as I try to remember, other than those of Reki and Rakka, we don't know much about dreams of other Haibane.. we are not sure about self-infliction of their death). Maybe, just my theory, Rakka ran away from her home, to a top floor of a skyscraper or a high rock somewhere in a forest. But her fall/ death was just an accident, she didn't mean to jump, she just wanted to be alone, or just "stared into the abyss". Someone came to help her, but discovered her too late. That would be the raven trying to save her.

    • @neetzsche9324
      @neetzsche9324  3 года назад +1

      @@michalschongut1186 I think so too, as I stated in the video she is likely to have accidently died.

    reki was the main character of the show, she also symbolizes a rebellious girl who became pregnant and can now choose to live a good life. I think it's pretty obvious that the egg in the beginning represents pregnancy, and reki being the one who takes responsibility for rakka shows the mother and daughter parallel. And I think that boy that reki ran off with when she was younger supports this thesis.

    The idea that rekki didn't help or be kind to rakka for the sake of being altruistic but instead because she wanted to help herself is something I feel is that everybody does in a way.
    Yeah some people do things because they feel that it's the right thing to do or kind and others do it for a reward or some "selfish" reason but I feel that at the center of it we all do it for ourselves.
    Humans are selfish creatures and everything we do is to further out own agendas whether that be good or bad subconsciously there's always something we seek to gain whether instantly or just to feel good.
    Doing nice things or helping people most of the times feels nice and when I do it I feel like a better person.
    In a way we are all doing it for something even when we say we aren't and not just because it was the right thing to do. However, rekki after being around rakka probably started to just be kind to her as her nature instead of the reason she did it in the first place which was to no longer be sin bound.
    What started off as a selfish thing became a genuine care for her yet rekki probably still thought of the endgame of her goal which was to help herself but while trying to do that helped rakka and is what led to rakka helping her.
    Just like a child is taught that by doing good on their grades or helping out with something could gain them a reward and possibly help them start doing it because doing good things feels good rather than for material gain rekki helping rakka which started for her own selfish gain became something that helped her despite it.
    She helped her help herself.
    Haibane renmei is one of my favorite animes for that reason as despite the wings and the halos the haibane are like humans.
    In my personal opinion they are in a sort of purgatory and what allows them to go on their day of flight is by learning something they didn't when they were alive.
    Rekki after what happened to her almost never opened up about her pain and just coped with the pain until she thought she'd be able to find a way to make it go away.
    She thinks by doing good that good would come to her by removing that "curse".
    In a way that's exactly what happened but only after she opened up about her intentions for doing so and learnt the lesson she had been avoiding possibly for years.
    By helping rakka, rakka helped her.
    Rekki possibly could have gotten help way earlier or learnt the lesson sooner but just as we humans do decided to suffer in silence.
    Out of all of yoshitoshi abe's works and even serial experiments lain this is the one that stuck with me the most as I personally could relate to rekki's entire thought process as I myself have done the same where I could have gotten help but instead just sat with the problem until it ate me up inside and I was basically pushed into a situation that became bigger than it would have been had I just been more open.
    Often doing the right thing is harder than doing what will benefit you the most and rekki basically did the right thing to help herself and because of it actually got the help she needed once she was honest about it.
