Catbells in a SNOW STORM - BLIZZARD CONDITIONS - Fjällräven Anorak No 8 !

- Опубликовано: 27 авг 2024
- I faced a snow storm on Catbells today - blizzard conditions and a real test for the Fjallraven Anorak No 8 - which performed amazingly! All I had on under the anorak was a merino wool base layer - and that was all I needed!
Catbells is a great walk - one to consider for your first Lakeland fell and definitely suitable (albeit not in these conditions), for your little ones too!
Great fun - good for the body, good for the mind & good for the soul!
Check out the Anorak No 8 at the Mountain Factor, Ambleside (where I purchased mine) - great team, great product knowledge and advice !

Haha, like to mix it up a bit! Think you're the only person to have picked up on my old DiCaprio impression 😅
Evening chirs mad wind fun times. Well done mate. An thanks for the words.
Cheers Andy, glad you enjoyed mate - ATB - Chris
@@MCMOutdoors thank you
Great video, we really enjoyed the bit at the summit, no words were even needed. Beautiful!
It was certainly a good day out! Thanks for watching 👍
Brilliant experience Chris........first time I took our lass up there it was pissing down and windy and she said '' f***king Wainwright wants to drag his grandkids and granny up here'' lol. That coledale horseshoe is a cracking hike in summer mate(a must do).......cheers....Stu....👍
Haha! Yeah, maybe grannies is a bit far fetched but then again you can be fit at all ages! I've read about that Circular round mate and definitely will get it done this year! ATB - Chris
I was on the fence about getting one, but now I am convinced. Thanks!
It's a top garment mate! ATB
Wild places in wild weather are the best.
Agreed !
Chris; you gotta do audiobooks! 🧐😁 Wainwright's spiritual grandson👊🏼
Haha, maybe one day! He had more hair than me mate, even in his last days 👍
Great upload Chris. Brings back awesome memories of doing that walk with my Border Collies 1993 . I managed to actually burn them out that day ,which was no mean feat. Happy days.. Memories of Jake and Ben my old buddies ,now in heaven...
It's a great walk mate! Sounds like you have some brilliant memories there. ATB - Chris
Top video!! I’ve been thinking about the Anorak jacket for some time now and this video as well as your jacket review has made decide to pull the trigger. Well done buddy. Thank you
Thanks - I hope you enjoy your Anorak! Let us know how you get on with it 👍
Great video really enjoyed it, done cat bells a few years ago and loved it.
It's a great fell ! Many people dismiss it owing to it not being 'high' enough - I say - it's a fantastic walk - as per Mr Wainwright himself - ATB
Returned my Anorak 8, and bought a FjallRaven Keb Eco Shell jacket instead. Thanks for the hiking test!!!!=) I needed waterproof, windproof, breathable, and versatility for brutal hunting trips in the big bad mountains of Northern BC!:)
Glad it was of use ! - ATB, - Chris
Great vid mate. Even on a hill like Catbells, when the weather is bad it pays to have the right gear on. We've got our eyes on Causey Pike next time we're in Keswick.
Thanks mate - it was pretty rough at times. Nice to give the gear a decent test. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Chris, great intro with Wainrights description of Catbells. The reality looked somewhat different on your walk though. Thanks for demonstrating how, with the right gear, preparation and experience the hills can be enjoyed in all weathers.
Was up Catbells early Feb in storm Ciara - could hardly stand up and I loved every minute of it.
Cheers and I look forward to the next video.
Thanks Stephen. - was a great walk and I loved the weather. I did learn one lesson which is never have an unsecured map on your person in such winds - took a right crack to the face with it. I'm already looking forward to the next adventure. Thanks for taking the time out to comment. Chris
Fantastic video, I’ve only done catbells in the summer but that looked great fun. Keep them coming please
Thanks Jon - it's a great fell - proves it doesn't have to be mega high to be good fun. ATB - Chris
And I thought you would have gone on to Maiden Moor!! Great video, great googles and jacket. But I think you have to be daft, mad, brave, or a combination of all three to be up there on a day like that! Winter is here. Regards, Ashley
Thanks Ashley, I was ready for a pub with a log fire after the first summit and knew the conditions were only going to get worse. Thanks for watching ! I’m probably a bit mad but there were a few others up there too. Cheers - Chris
Great video 📹 👍 Well made and great sound track 👣 👍
Thanks Sam, had a top day on Catbells! ATB
Hoping to do this walk in the next couple of days so thanks for this x
It's a good one Dawn - enjoy 👍
Great video Chris 👍 a nice warm Irish Whiskey in order after those conditions i say 🌟 thanks for sharing 😉
Sadly I was driving so just had a quick half - but a whiskey would have been nice. Thanks for watching
I parked in the exact same layby last time I did Catbells, just before Christmas. Just where you started the assent, was the place I fell flat on my face, crossing the road, on back ice, canny start to the day lol. Solitude..... timed that right lol. Snow also came on time, made it look brilliant on the summit and that jacket really came into its own. Great watch, Like and full watch, cheers Alan
Thanks Alan - lovely winter walk - great conditions. Really enjoyed it - thanks for watching and commenting. Just a case of which fell to pick next now!
It was indeed causy pike, the steep bit on the end is called Rowling End. Looks epic
Yeah mate, it looked like the Matterhorn (a bit), in the snow! Will do that soon! Thanks for you comments mate 👍
Lovely stuff Chris, best time of year to go too. We went from Keswick on the boat last Fathers Day, sitting up there with my partner, three daughters and grand daughter was just something special.
Thanks Max, it's a lovely atmospheric walk isn't it. I will get the ferry across one day too. ATB mate
One amazing walk! 👍
Cheers Mike 👍
that was great, i was up there end of november similar to this but not as windy, the googles looked cool and i bet they made the world of difference
Goggles were a god send mate - was like being shot in the face with ball bearings! Lovely little mountain isn't it! ATB mate - Chris
Well that was a winter blast mate wasn’t it. A great climb in real nasty but enjoyable weather. Looks like you had a cracking day Chris 👍
Was a good one mate. You and Charlie would enjoy that one - ATB - Chris
MCM Outdoor Show yeah it didn’t look massive, that’s a bonus for me lol
Great video Chris really enjoyed it, its on my list for this year 👍👍
Thanks Steve - I'm sure you'll love Catbells 👍
A fantastic production 😃🇦🇺👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video Chris!
Thanks Tim, was a great walk ❄️👍
You had a bit of a ding dong with the weather, Nansen would have been proud of you.Ski goggles were an excellent idea but Huskies probably would have been a bit OTT so well done mate.Is that training for K2 or Annapurna masif ? Dog Bells just doesn't have the same ring to it really does it ? Hamster Bells ? No,let's leave it there - just purrfect ! Good job you didn't call out the Air Ambulance - due to austerity measures tea and biscuits have been slashed from the budget and i think you'll find museums will soon be a thing of the past ?
Haha, great trip that - brilliant fun.
great video chris. looked a bit chilly. Thats the first mountain that i ever climbed ( mind you , ive not done many ) It was a toss up, who was the least fittest between me and an indian bloke .lol. All in good fun though.
Alright Billy - it's a top walk mate - very enjoyable. Thank you for watching and your comments 👍
The Badger bar! Sounds like my kinda place😎
It's ace! The real rock walls are incorporated in the toilets!
MCM Outdoors my sleeping bags finally showed up.. just loaded my rucksack and put it on.. for a solo trip it doesn’t feel too heavy.. especially now I watched a few vids for how to fit them properly and found out the waist strap is supposed to handle the majority of the weight lol.. every day is a school day.. might get out tonight 🍻
Loved that Chris , 👍👍
Thanks Ed, was an epic day - very memorable weather. ATB
Great video fella, doing skiddaw on Sunday can't wait to get up there.
Thanks mate - hope the snow stays around for you - I'm sure it will! Enjoy & thanks for taking the time to comment 👍 Chris
@@MCMOutdoors a pleasure mate top channel, never done a climb in winter/snow conditions, looking forward to it, initially wanted to do great gable but think that might be a bit more difficulty in heavy winter conditions, looking forward to it either way been too long, keep up the good work 👍
@@rawdog314 the old Gable is a beast mate - proper grueller. The Wasdale Head Inn is the saving grace on that one.

Was up at red tarn Thursday and the weather was awsome. Was staying at sykeside bunkhouse
Nice! Helvellyn?
@@MCMOutdoors no not on this trip
Bet you had a great time mate
@@MCMOutdoors best day on the hills this year so far 😁
@@arranwalker good stuff 👍
I got the no 8 and it’s great in wind and snow but poor in sheeting rain.
Yep...... It's not waterproof and doesn't pretend to be 👍
Great video don’t no how you managed it with one hand on the camera 👍
Was a good one Stuart - great conditions!
Nice walk. great vid. There's been snow on the top of Pendle from about the start of the steps for 2 days this week, don't know if it's still there as I'm in London for a couple of days.
Hi Peter, cheers for the info re Pendle Hill! Let me know if it's still there when you get back? Can't beat Pendle Hill in the snow. ATB - Chris
@@MCMOutdoors Snow has all gone as of Monday afternoon 2/3/2020
@@petersmithm9 ah no! Thanks for letting me know!
Ello m8 i really enjoy watching your vids👍. Would that have been Friday morning/dinnertime just gone?? I attempted Helvellyn that morning but had to turn round because the snow up there was bad! And i had no goggles! I parked at kettlewell carpark afterwards looking over to catbells with my binoculars, i Only saw 1 or 2 people go up there that day 👍
It was indeed mate - some great fun conditions to walk in! Sounds like a sensible decision to turn back 👍👍
I've got to get that jacket looks the bomb, managed to find it online for £322 but I can imagine it will last for years.
Seems a good price - a lot is dependent upon size and colour. I wanted the tarmac colour mate which I couldn't get in my size. They're huge so go one down.
@@MCMOutdoors I will do, I've never had anything Fjallraven gear I normally get Montane, but I will get it in the Olive colour.
@@steveharrison1765 let us know how you get on with it - jacket for life
Love it mate, how do you find the aclima base layers
Thanks for watching James.
They're great - do the job - all I had on (genuinely), was the base layer + anorak - that was enough.
ATB - Chris
Superb video mate, really enjoyed it , fair play to you doing that in a blizzard takes some doing , Helvellyn on a sunny day kills me off, but once you get to the top, it all make sense, thanks for the vid , keep them coming, quick question , what type of gloves were they? what gloves would you recommend?
Alright mate - these were Hestra 'Njord' gloves - very warm and durable. Hope this helps.
I don't mean to nitpick but in the description you said the Anorak performed amazingly, but at the end of the video you said you were soaking wet and keen to get a place by the fire. Can see from the video that the anorak completely wet out.
I only say this because I have a no.8 and have had similar experiences. I've got an ME goretex proshell now for this kind of thing, which makes me question why I payed so much money for the anorak 8 (other than it looks awesome) so I was hoping to get your candid take on it.
Hi Sean, I do think it performed amazingly otherwise I wouldn't have said it. I bought the Anorak myself. It's not meant to be waterproof and doesn't pretend to be? As you know, it can be made more water resistant with the use of wax - but it will eventually wet through. I was warm throughout the walk and did a great job of keeping the wind at bay - hence why I said it performed amazingly because I think it did.
I never bought it thinking it is waterproof - as its not. I have many goretex jackets and can wear one of these to stay completely dry. I find the G1000 dries quickly.
My candid take is that its a solid, robust garment and great at keeping the wind and elements at bay. It's not waterproof - but it's not meant to be. I have a few pairs of their trousers and likewise, they eventually wet through.
All subjective I guess though as what works for me might not be what someone else likes.
Thanks for watching 👍
@@MCMOutdoors nice one, thanks for the quick reply.
I am enjoying your vids.
Cheers mate!
Great vid. Did you wax your jacket? I'm contemplating doing it to mine.
Hi Phil, I did - but it will still wet through in conditions such as this - doesn't bother me though as the wool base layer still keeps you warm even when wet. ATB - Chris
How did that anorak fair in the rain? And was it waxed? I live in bc. And the weather can be damp and wet alot of the year. But I'm also in the bush alot.
Hi, the Anorak was hardly waxed at all - it eventually wet through, as its not designed to be waterproof. I could wax it a lot more to extend the time it would take to wet through. It's a great garment and will last many years.
Hi, don't You wax Your anorak? It didn't seem to bead off any water. On a video at least it seemed like sucking moisture pretty quickly. I thought it has some more water resistance?
Hi, mine is only very lightly waxed - so it wets through reasonably quickly. I could extend this by applying more wax - but at the expense of breathability. Its not waterproof, just resistant - to a degree - dependent upon how much its waxed 👍
@@MCMOutdoors isn't it worth to wax more at least on a shoulders and upper back? Especially if You are in such a climate condition with lots of wind and rain?
Indeed it is - it's a matter of personal preference 👍
Hi Chris, is the hat you are wearing at 3:10 the Fjallraven Singi Balaclava Cap? If yes, what are your thoughts about, performance, fit and comfort (is it lined). Looking at getting one as Fjallraven have them on sale at the moment. Thank you.
Hi, yes it is - I don't wear it for actual fell walking etc - it's not lined, but is not uncomfortable. It's very warm and the balaclava feature is useful! It's versatile in that it also has a small peak to keep the sun from your eyes - usual Fjallraven good quality - I'd say go for it if it's on offer 👍
@@MCMOutdoors Thanks Chris. Just ordered one. Thanks for the feedback and help again. Appreciated.
Hi, can i ask, you said you were soaked after the walk, does this mean the jacket is not waterproof and if not, what is it’s main purpose. Slightly worried, as i have just bought one and now wondering if it is the right bit of kit for me.
Hi mate, it's not waterproof - it's water resistant and can be made more or less so by applying Greenland Wax - it's not designed as a waterproof jacket - it's is however very water resistant - the conditions I was in were brutal - it cut out the wind and kept me warm, despite eventually wetting though. It's a brilliant bit of kit - for cold, windy days and very versatile. It takes a lot of rain to wet through. A day of showers and biting wind - this is your jacket. I absolutely love mine.
I think because of the soak through, I might want to send mine back and go with a fjallraven Keb Eco Shell Jacket. Sometimes I hunt in brutal weather like that, and I can't risk being wet in the elements like that. Perhaps if you had synthetic base layer, might it all just dry super fast? My synthetic base layer and shell gets soaked often from 5 - 10 km hikes, dries within 15 - 20 minutes, is unbelievable so I just might keep my anorak, wax treat it, and use synthetic base layer, can still stay very warm when wet in synthetic, breathable gear is a must.
