    Everything you said is true. Hip-Hop used to be about expressing yourself through the art. Being unique and creative. Standing out from the crowd. Now, everybody wants everything to sound the same. It's largely due to the Internet and having access to so many different options. You're not forced to sit with a new idea and really digest it. Before, you had to go out and spend your hard-earned money on a new album. It had to be different from the last album you bought to justify the purchase. Record labels understood that and wouldn't sign artists unless they were unique. Now, with RUclips and streaming services, your options are limitless, and it doesn't cost any extra to hear something. You don't need to get your money's worth from the new album. You just listen, one time, and if it doesn't sound like what you already like, you just throw it away and move on to what you're familiar with. No risk. So, what happens? Artists are forced to try to sound like other artists, who are already successful, in order to get people to take interest. Record labels start signing carbon copies of the last successful artist, because that's what people are streaming. As soon as the artist tries to do something different with their art, it's considered trash, and they fell off. Different is corny, so everyone has to think and act the same, or they won't be accepted.
    To put it into perspective, Eminem's first album "Infinite" flopped, because it sounded too much like AZ, Nas and a lot of what was out at the time. If Eminem put that album out today, it would probably get praised for the same reason. We're killing creativity and originality

    • @banksofchaos93
      @banksofchaos93 Месяц назад +2

      I am about to out myself as being old as hell 😂 but you are really getting at something central with this lack of investment now because of streaming and the internet and all this.
      I'm 51. The amount of money I spend on my youtube subscription every month today for more music than I can even listen to? That used to buy me one record if I was lucky. And I had to take my time to decide what record I was going to choose to invest in. I had to get a ride or take a bus to go buy it - sometimes i had to go to a different city to buy it. By the time I got it home, I'd read the liner notes multiple times. Within a day I'd have listened to it in its entirety multiple times. Not while I was doing something else - I was listening. That's what I was doing.
      It was an investment. As a listener, I bought in to the record, in a sense. I got on board. That concept seems totally alien now. It seems like a lot of people think it's too uncool to just *like* something. If you aren't critiquing it out the gate, you're implicit in its corniness or whatever these people are thinking.
      When friends came over, we'd put on a record. Not tracks, the record. The whole general idea was kind of like, ok, let's figure out what this record is about. It was meeting the artist in the world they made and getting familiar with it. And that took time and careful listening and repeat exposure.
      We went in trusting the artist, basically. Because we were making a choice when we went to buy that record. Idk if i'm succeeding in conveying what i mean 😅 but i say it all to say that 100%, I think what you're saying is a huge part of what's going on.
      And music has gotten kinda dumber as a result. These young artists sometimes have never even listened to the artists that paved the way for them. They don't know where they come from. And audiences don't know how to be patient and let something cook or energe - they don't know how to listen because music is throwaway to them, or at least ephemeral. There is no sense of investment or ownership, no feeling like they really have dived deep and gotten lost in the experience an artist created. And honestly, not many artists that are super popular *are* creating these complex worlds or experiences - because they don't know how.
      it's genuinely sad because it's almost like they are missing the... musicality of music. They're missing what music is really capable of. Ok, I def sound like an old fart yelling at clouds now, so i'll show myself out 😅
      But I'm happy the algorithm showed me where the grown folks are hanging out on RUclips this morning! You got my sub with this real talk here, nice to encounter it.

      This right here is a great synopsis of what I was going for. We don’t have to pay $16.99 to hear these albums so we don’t need to invest anytime into digesting them

    • @kinglui3422
      @kinglui3422 Месяц назад +3

      @@banksofchaos93 you're absolutely right. Everything was important. From the title of the album to the song names and artwork. It all played a role in convincing us that it was worth the investment. It had to be, because we were going to have to sit with it for a while. The artist understood that, and we valued the ones who worked hard to show us that they understood. I remember looking at every detail of an album, and on the way home, thinking about each song and wondering what it was gonna be about. Increasing the excitement. Listening to an album was like a journey through the artist's mind. It was so much more than just sounds in your ears.
      Artists used to work hard for that $16.99. We often blame current artists for not making quality music like back in the day but it's largely the consumer's fault too. Why should they work so hard for a fraction of a dollar? We listen once, they might get a few cents, and we throw it away. They might as well make throwaway music that sounds like something already successful. It takes less time and effort, and they're most likely gonna get people to listen at least once. If they aim towards what's already successful and catchy, they have a better chance of getting people to keep listening. It makes more sense to work less for more pay, than to work hard for less. It really sucks because it's taking away what makes music special

      Its crazy, so many of these reviewers give scores withiut breaking down tracks, discussing lyrics, or even knowing the rapper's track record. They just give it a vibe score that spits in the face of the artistsl's hard work. Common is a whole legend and has been consistent since he started and Pete Rock, a top five producer in my opinion.

    This album was definetly fan service, and he showed that hes still capable of tapping into the old flow he used to do sprinkled across the album.
    Personally i prefer that renaissance flow or the flows he was doing with the ai vocals on antichrist. They sound buttery smooth. But i know he doesnt want to be put in a box and limit his creativity by sticking to flows he perfected. Unfortunately in experimenting with some of the flows he does now, theres more chance for flows im not too fond of, like the sharp starting / stopping flows that can sound stiff and robotic, (i.e the flow on bad one where he says "when ye forget.. to take his meds")

      first 30 or so seconds of renaissance were recorded way back. and it sounds great. then you can hear the voice change as he tries to keep the same flow with his current voice plus bit of AI, and it's still good but not prime em ofc which is to be expected. still, i love the album, i think he shines the brightest in lucifer

    @ThisTimeLady Месяц назад

    This was so very good! Spot on!
    I remember listening to some vocal coaches reacting to LiSA (a Japanese singer) and her song Homura (First Take version)and she is emotional throughout the song but it truly adds to the song...she has ONE slightly flat note but otherwise still had perfect pitch and air control etc They pointed out the slightly flat note and quickly added they were pointing it out just because it's OKAY for something not to be 100% technically "correct" or "perfect" especially if OVERALL that bit of "imperfection" actually ADDS to the connection between artist, song and audience. They then added that if people expect perfection from an artist (ESPECIALLY on a first take and on a song that's not all that musically easy) then people need to scale back expectations and also, realise that music exists outside the realm of autotune.
    I think a lot of people today have gotten too accustomed to just creating a Playlist...Taylor EVERYTHING to what one wants...have everything catered to their own preferences. It's fine to do that but realise it's a YOU thing. As you stated, an artist's album is made with their own ideas behind it...their own intent.
    So, younger and older people, all ages, really... have gotten too used to this sort of echo chamber. And again, as you mentioned I think, putting out opinions as if they are full on objective truths.

    When I was a kid and was getting new cd’s. My friends and I would listen to them entirely, and throughout my life I have come to the conclusion that concept albums are the best albums overall. You look outside of hip hop at a band that was revolutionary for the time such as “The Beatles” and you look at their discography, and “Sgt. Pepper” such a diverse, and completely different sound for the album that is universally loved and influential is a concept album. A lot of artists throughout the 60’s throughout the 2000’s made concept albums that were meant to be listened to entirely from beginning to end. Many greater songs come out of a line up overtime that are not necessarily the hit single or top three hit singles of the album. Sometimes there’s songs in there that should have been the hit single rather then the ones released or promoted. The whole point of a concept album is to go over various concepts, subjects, emotions, story, imagery that overall by the end of the album feels conclusive, all encompassing,and right.
    If I could put it in battle rap terms. It’s essentially ending your third with a haymaker that shakes the room ( when you’re listening to the last song of the album ), rather then ending on a mediocre bar that could be applied to anyone (ending your album on something light, random, or not meaningful).

    I have my issues with the album, i gave the album a 7.5 after my first few listens, and nearly a month later my score hasnt changed. I always wanted a concept album from eminem since listening to gkmc. So i was excited for this album when i realized it was conceptual.
    On to my issues (not a review):
    One is an issue ive had with em since recovery, sound quality/ mixing. Its just unacceptable that eminem, with his industry status, having connections he has, (like dre, who is undeniably the best sound engineer in the industry,) doesnt make sure the music sounds flawless before shipping it.
    No issue with the use of ai to bring out his older voice, but one reason, to me, the use of ai was so apparent and sort of takes me out of the immersion experience, is due to its poor mixing. At times the "2000s shady" ai filter on certain songs sound distorted, or robotic as if hes speaking through a phone. For example, like on guilty conscience 2, the shady ai vocals sound digitized for lack of a better word. At one point towards the end when theyre in a tussle, theres even a voice crack on the ai vocals.
    The song road rage was perfect; the skit in the middle of the song even had the same sound quality as the mid skit in criminal (as opposed to the mid skit on favorite b***** off mtbmb side b which wasnt mixed by dre), then come to find out, dre mixed it.
    Dre doesnt even have to produce a single beat, eminem should just send his albums to him for mix and mastering after recording.
    Speaking of ai vocals, theres skits on the album where idea is supposed to be shady harassing marshall, and in those skits, the "shady" vocalc lack the ai appropriate filter to portray that persona. Like on trouble, where shady takes over and you hear eminem in the background trying to stop him, or the "all you got" skit, its all eminems current voice. So although you know whos speaking just by content of the lyrics, it lacks attentuon to detail in the context of the album. That also take me out of the immersion of the concept experience.
    Its the equivalent as if the recent complex "shady vs eminem face off" interview lacked ai facial filter, itll just appear as eminem 2024 facing off with eminem 2024.
    Another issue is that eminem doesnt really expand on the freedom of speech aspect much, repeating things like Caitlyn Jenner or little people multiple times. After a while im like "okay we get it" There was a level of wit and humor that old shady had, where you mightve lol'ed and felt bad afterwards. So for eminem to make a track like trouble, where hes in character as his old self, its disappointing that the lyrics which are meant to be old shady fashioned - humorously offensive, are as dull as simply saying "f blind people." It becomes obvious rage bait where people who'd normally get offended at lyrics would just brush it off, as opposed to a song like criminal where the lyrics have more of a chance at offending.
    Another issue is certain songs doesnt fit in with the concept virtually in any way... even if theyre great songs, such as fuel (in the midst of the main storyline between Habits and GC2), bad one, and tobey. Tobey shouldve honestly been a bonus track.
    Im aware alot of these issues may seem like nitpicks, but they add up, and unfortunately hinders my experience. I can enjoy this album for what it is, but i really want to love it the way i see people raving about it, i just cant bring myself to that point.

    • @challzbrown
      @challzbrown  Месяц назад +3

      I’m so glad you took the time to explain your issues and most of them had nothing to with personal beat choice and specific lyrical content. You actually spoke on continuity and serious mix down issues. That means you clearly listened to it in full and didn’t just pick the ‘best beats’. I respect this opinion to the fullest. It’s okay not to like it but dont just hate it because it doesn’t sound like everything you already want to hear. Go post

People like what they like and they reserve the right to crown someone or something the best based off their taste. With that being said I think it’s unfair to accuse someone of being confined to a box when you yourself is projecting your opinion from the top of your own Box 📦 just because your box may be large enough to hold more vinyl records then his CDs and cassettes doesn’t take away from the fact you too are in a box Good brother 💯

I remember when Tool dropped Lateralus... and people couldn't STAND it. Now, it's one of their most beloved albums. And I'll say this... it might be a bad take, but it's what I've seen in the past decade ,in my opinion*. The majority of artists don't create albums with the effort focusing on the art. I feel like most artists focus on the money. And when REAL artists come out with something truly special... it goes by unappreciated. Mainly because of the bubble you spoke about. Many artists only release singles now. They don't even TRY to create a full body of work. I don't know if it's a good thing or not. I just know I appreciate an artist who puts the time and effort into a full body of work. I'm not a 'singles only' fan.

    I’m glad artists like Common and Em are showing the importance of having albums that are full bodies of work. I enjoy listening to an artist’s whole album each time too so I can’t relate to folks who pick thru songs on albums either. I feel for the past 10 years or so most rap artists pretend to have a “concept” but their albums are just a collection of singles to boost streams. It’s only been a few who produce real albums. 90s Hip Hop really spoiled us on greatness because a lot of the albums from that era are like cinematic masterpieces.

      Yeah man I hate those fake ‘concept’ albums where they just picked their best or favorite 13-14 tracks and throw it out under some bs title or contrived theory LP. You can tell it had no concept whatsoever

    As a fan of Eminem, this album is fan service. He goes back and forth between his old self and new self and brings back his old flow which fans will love. The only problem is that the edgy stuff he used to say were exaggerated events from his life whereas now it's just some controversial stuff about blind people and other groups. Imo this is his 6th best album and his best album since 2013. A lot of people hating on it think that Trouble is a 5 minute song and haven't listened to it so idrc about their opinions.

    Big fan of eminem here...
    The album is bad, listened to it multiple times now, the concept is good, the execution is bad. the only way I found to defend this album is that it was supposed to suck. The lyrics are bad, no matter how technical it was, how well structured it was, I understand he's mocking his old self and shi like that, but the execution was terrible, there are way better ways to convey the message he was going for, but he decide to be the grumpy 51 year old that's howling at the sky and making unfunny ass jokes about cancel culture and things like that, tried to come off as witty, sounded like the most corny shit on the planet.]

    The death of slim shady doesn't feel impactful for me because 1. I don't like slim shadys gimmick very much anymore, I'm not 12 years old, and 2. Slim shady always felt like a mask em would wear to say the shit he really thought, "but it's a joke character so you can't get mad at me for saying all the gamer words." Idk it doesn't feel like slim shady actually dies here, or at least, I think a lot of Eminem's beliefs and values are just kinda trash, which I also don't wanna believe.
    The music was like 8/10, mostly bangers with a couple songs I didn't much care for, but the content was about 50/50 for me. Still a good album, but I think there are valid critiques of his music that aren't "the beat and the flow," which were fine, idk where people are coming from with that.

    Dont disagree, enjoyed the video, but any thoughts on maybe this isnt the era where people want to laugh much and THATs why funny hip hop isnt hitting or seems corny? Fun music is for fun times. The election cycle is crazy, the enviornment is screwed, record heatwaves killing people, nobody is getting paid enough, shootings, Ukraine, Palestinian genocide, etc.
    And btw, Em is cool, extremely talented but its hard to listen to a whole album with his voice IMO meanwhile Black Thought can stay on repeat in my book. 👍

      Excellent synopsis, you are correct but also I think people have removed the option to make comedic rap from the artist. They want this overly serious and ‘real’ music to reflect the artist entire life at all times or they write it off. These are definitely treacherous times and people want music to reflect it there also should be an outlet. People still watch stand up comedy religiously so comedic rap should have a market.

    That's why i dont understand. From the outside perspective of a not purist hip hop fan. I enjoyed all music. From rock, metal, future, metro, von, eminem. I dont understand the hate or pure nit picking.. The hip hop fans kinda not opened up to experimentation in terms of sound or lyrics or topics... Other artists from different genre try to push their sound by experimenting with the sound, concept or theme in certain album, but rap kinda get boxed in. If you dont rap about guns, hoe and killing opps it's corny, or the beat not the typical trendy beat. It's automatic labelled as trash. I'll listen to death of slim shady anyday of the week rather than the new ice spice album.

I love Ems music, you quoting old school lyrics Kool Moe Dee popped in my head 3 days later go see the doctor 😂 a rap about STDs! 3:21, I’ve been saying the same thing for 30 YEARS !!!! When BIG, Nas and other alike started spittin’ and it was hot….thats all HIP HOP wanted. Anything else was wack or just “Aight” to the ear of the fans. No more diversity with it. You were fans of so and so for years until they didn’t sound like what’s new. This is an old argument but I’m gonna continue to listen and let you cook. So far….I agree.

      @@challzbrown I remember someone reviewed all of Ems album but hated the later ones including this one because it’s not “fun” for him. It’s why i say it’s subjective, being technical is also subjective to the individual. Reactors, like you said happen to be all about the technicals too but some can admit that even tho it’s not fun for them, it being technical is a plus and can’t trash the work either. I don’t agree with this comment for many reasons, for one many black hip hoppers DO like Eminem not to mention many white hip hoppers DO NOT like this album so your out of bounds on bth fronts. This video has nothing to do with race even though some black rap fans won’t except Eminem as the greatest ever . Let’s just start with the fact Eminem is NOT the greatest ever although his is very good at the craft and respects the culture way more than most. Let’s be clear this album doesn’t ‘cement’ Em as the greatest, I honestly believe he has better material not to mention the work does have its short comings but the purpose of the video was to explain to some hip hop fans that they have lost their open ears for different styles and it’s getting to be a closed circumference in regards to what the deem ‘good’. That’s it. Nothing racial
