    I can’t imagine people bringing cash into my community by the literal boat load and then treating them this way. Be very careful what you wish for.

    • @Ravencall
      @Ravencall 2 месяца назад

      The only "community" that benefits from these behemoth cruise ships is the little strip of tourist shops, restaurants , and tour outfits at the dock. (And since the cruises have meals included the benefit to local restaurants is not that great.). Most cruise tourists don't even walk two blocks up the hill to visit the museum or year-around shops. The only benefit to residents is the constant noise of little planes and helicopters flying out over the glacier during cruise ship season. We all have to deal with limits. Limiting the number of cruise ships coming into Juneau is perfectly reasonable.

    • @darylb5564
      @darylb5564 2 месяца назад

      @@Ravencall I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to limit the aircraft. If the tourist don’t come up the hill and stay in one small area it sounds like a real first world problem

    I cruise every year and often feel guilty getting dumped into little towns for the day with a couple hundred of my travels mates. I think limiting these ports to only one or two ships daily, and having a day off every week is a great idea. Also, limiting ship size to say 2000 passengers in smaller ports. I travel on a 750 passenger ship for this reason.

    Well, the problem with tourists isn't their money.
    - It's the meatheads on vacation who think they're by-God entitled to the best of everything just because they paid for a cruise.
    - It's the litter and garbage they leave behind. And that's not even getting into the extra burden on sewage system [ALWAYS an issue in Alaska] with each ship dumping multiple thousands of gallons of literal crap.
    - It's all the times they DON'T spend money. They just come in, take pictures, and are back on the bus /cruise ship in half a day.
    - It's the extra drunks roaming around town making asses of themselves.
    - It's rise in the crime rate because people on vacation don't think of the consequences of their actions.
    - And it's the not being able to go to the places you love in the town where you live because they're jam packed with a bunch of selfie-sticks with feet.
    Tour operators sell your town and bring in money, that's all very true. But the price you pay is some pretty annoying inconveniences and some serious outright problems. Tourism is nice for the city, but oftentimes it's lousy for the residents.

    It’s always interesting that the only locals the media speaks to is those who are against tourism. Please take the time to talk to the rest of us! I own a tour company in Juneau and our city works closely with the cruise industry to work together on managing the industry. Please do stories on the Tourism Best Management Practices, which is more than 20 years old and is a program created by the local tour companies to support the industry AND to support locals. There are processes in place and we keep making big changes. However, there will always be those few who no matter what we do won’t rest until more than half of us are out of business. It’s so disappointing and incredibly disheartening.

    If Alaska doesn’t want cruise ships they should quit going problem solved.
    Then wait 1 year maybe 2 and see what happens. They’ll be complaining about the cities not making money.
    Actually it’s the cruise industries fault with all these big ships there’s to many people on them for these places to handle.
    I can see why the locals are
    P!ssed, I went to Bar Harbor last year by car. The 1 day a cruise ship was there it was a nightmare you couldn’t walk the streets without shoving your way thru crowds of people.
    Maybe have 1 small ship a week there then everybody is happy.
    Maybe these cities should tell us if there’s problems, are the locals being treated like crap by the cruisers or is it the other way around or both?
    Something tells me that has a lot to do with this.

I live in New Zealand and our visitors are half of what they were before 2019, but it is far more expensive now to come here, therefore the value of our tourism has increased, less people paying more is far better then double that amount paying half, because it is easier to manage high end tourism compared to budget tourism, and a better experience for the tourists and the host nation

      I live on the SE coast in Alaska about 90 miles north of Juneau. It's the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Snow covered mountains in every direction. Our community of 1,500 people limits the large cruise ships to just one per week. We just don't have the capacity to handle 2,000 visitors off a ship that size. We don't have a hospital or pharmacy. Our health clinic has two beds in the ER. We have four Police officers but only two work the same shift.
      It's a magical place to live, rural and remote, very much removed from the outside world, that's why people want see it. That's why it's so important that residents protect and preserve what makes this place magical.

      @chilkat_river What does lack of health care matter, though? If they get hurt, they travel to a hospital, the same as you. If they need meds, you mark it up and plan for next year to have more. If there are no hotels, they load back up on the ship. I understand not wanting visitors, I'm an ogre at heart, but picketing and spraying tourists with water is just inhospitable and extremely rude. Places never stay the same forever, and sometimes you just have to move deeper in the woods, I suppose.
