My favorite !!!
I love the 1930 style!!
Thank you for your beautiful videos!
So many layers and nowadays. Some people walk almost naked. Modesty was what represented elegance. In today's modern world showing skin is the best. I wish clothing like this would make a comeback.
Do it! We can all make it happen
People were still slutty and in some ways even worse than today. wallis simpson comes to mind... can dress modest but still lure a king to abandon his people and party with nazis so its not all butterflies and roses.
My word OMG OMG that gets my heart racing SO BEAUTIFUL
very interesting videos it's nice to see who things were in the past
these videos make me want to go back in time and wear all of this...
I love your videos! I hope you do a 1920's one soon
There will be one very soon!

Beautiful upload! And very informative as always ❤️
I love 1930s clothes they were so gorgeous
Cuando yo era niño , vi a mi madre vestirse así ... en esa época las señoras eran unas Damas!
Very Downton Abbey💙
That was lovely. Thank you.
you guys could do a 1940s one
Love these videos! Thank you~
Wow what a lady!
Девушка выглядит очень мило и симпатично. Но сколько одежды!
Its sooo elegant and classy! omg and look at how girls wearing colourful leggings and random baggy sweatpants... ugh its gone,Im teenager but really wish i was born in the 20s or 30s... maybe Im just too old now
In the 30s you could get dressed without a maid, no corset and few layers, and less clothes washing. If you had a figure, the style was still sexy but practical. Clothes shopping was becoming less expensive due to the reduced complexity of garments. A girl could flaunt a bit of stocking.
Imagine women having to use the lavatory with all those layers on. Geez. lol
Suspender clips haven't changed at all.
why did i read the title like getting depressed in the 1930s
Sort of related. But I've been on a lifelong journey to dress 1950s /: Is it just me or is it really that difficult? Especially if you want authentic and not this cherry and polka dot stuff and if it isn't it's expensive.
I feel you. Everything either looks like a halloween costume or is very expensive :(
Still a bit expensive, but I’d definitely check out unique vintage
to look for the "50s" fashion have a look at the "Bomb Site Boudica's" then you'll see how it really was.(In the UK)
My fave era for style. Fashion, furniture, architecture, automobiles, everything.
@
Hope Goodwin - and struggles between communists and nazis >_>
But seriously - if you would send your typical teenager back to 30s, either way he would die or people around would collapse of shock xD
And the Great Depression? Lol
I have two dining room pieces from the 30s. The small china closet is shaped like a jukebox.
I love it. The furniture is so practical....large enough to store what you need, but small enough to fit in a modest house.
Mine too! Beautiful decade for style. Streamlined, elegant, timeless.
EVERY era has its good and bad sides.
People generally are either too positive or too negative about our past.
My love for the era also started with the "superficial", the art, music, films, design, architecture, fashion etc.
But like most people I also thought that besides looking pretty it was an era that was mostly poverty, depression, political tensions, etc.
And all that is of course true but still it wasn't always as bad as most people think.
The great depression was horrific but more people had jobs than had not.
And for those with a job life was better than it had ever been.
Struggles between communists and nazis were also quite regional and not something everyone actually experienced.
What people also often seem to forget that for every bad part of the 1930s we can name a bad part of today.
I'm the last to say the 1930s were better or that 2019 is worse, as I said, both eras have their good and bad sides.
The model wore this outfit very well. I'm sure the foundation pieces helped, but she seemed to have the right figure for the outfit. I liked the blouse and skirt and think it could be worn today if the skirt was a little shorter. The lapels on the jacket are so nice. Too bad we don't wear hats regularly. I wonder if we could make it fashionable again.
you absolutely can wear them now.. some like the longer skirt (its surprisingly flattering) or make it shorter- as for hats if you love them Wear Them - absolutely no reason not to wear such cute accessories. :) you make your OWN fashions now days.. what makes it even better is you dont have to hunt up antique patterns to make these. there are pattern designers all over the place that have this kind of outfit in their stock designs -- Decades of Styles for the 20s to 50s - Wearing History for the 40s and SO many more :) have fun
There is a huge community of people who dress in this decade and others. If you like it, go for it!
I don't see why. We just have to find a way to integrate them again, I too wish we could bring back style. In fact I myself wait until Winter or Autumn to wear my "flapper" hat .
I wouldn’t wear shorter to me that looks amazing.
Besides long skirts are back in style again.
I remember one time I went to Wal-Mart and asked if they had any garder belts or stocking clips and the lady gave me a dirty look and said "sorry ma'am, we arnt that kind of store". It's kind of sad how that's been sexualized to the point of we don't even remember it's original use.
Yeah
we remember, its just not in fashion anymore... so im not surprised by the reaction you got lol
Dita Von Teese is bringing back the Garter Belt. I love her collections. Comfortable and stylish.
you went to walmart and asked for a specialty item and were...surprised they didn't carry them?
Well, to be fair, Wal-Mart isn't the kind of place where one would typically find sophisticated, or at the very least cultured, workers.
whats the cats name? credit him for his hard work lmao
We all stan the cat

I will call him Roussot
I swear, Liv Free has the greatest voice ever. She's such an awesome narrator for this channel.
The blouse and suit in this video is so beautiful. The hat makes my heart happy. Just so elegant and beautiful.
I *love* the blouse!
Me too ! I love the whole outfit as well !
It's wonderful.
600 people agree
According to my grandmother, born in 1917, first girdle and stockings, then knickers. That way you didn't have to undo the lot to use the loo...
that's right! You have to get completely undressed otherwise!
I was wondering about that.
That is something I always notice on models showing these items. Can always tell they do not wear them in everyday life when they put them on incorrectly.
If you are into it today it is the same Garter, Stocking, then Underwear - companies that display lingerie for every day use will showcase it this way look at Journelle
Mmmm...my kinda lady!
That hat is everything! I so wish hats suchs as this one were more in style or easily available
Try etsy.
Etsy, thrift stores, vintage shops, learning to make your own, etc
hats are awesome and this basic style fairly easy to obtain and or make yourself. if you love hats WEAR them.. enjoy them show those around you the classy feel you have with them.. nothing stopping you but you :)
I love vintage hats- I inherited my great grandfather's hat collection and wore one out today- sadly it was taken by a gust of wind into traffic where it rolled for several blocks before being flattened by a big rig. But I did get it back and was able to reshape it with only minimal effort. Surprisingly, it doesn't look like anything happened on the outside the felt reshaped easily- but inside the leather lining band cracked a lot- it was old and therefore kinda brittle.
@@blackphoenix63o46 wow!! hopefully you can get that lining band replaced - am so glad you could reshape it. what an adventure for the poor hat!!!!
Mom was born in 1935. She would have enjoyed this video.
Melissa Roscher my grandpa was born around 35 if not in 35 I’m not 100% sure but he’s still doing well. Weird to know people who were born that long ago and even longer still exist and thrive even today
My MIL was born in 1935, too. Of course she doesn't remember much of the 30's - 50's was more her thing, as then she became adult.
calihartley2010 I’ll have to ask and let you know! I wanna say 1937.....he’s gonna be turning 83 in November so at worst I’m off a year
Melissa Roscher k
My grandmother was born in 1929.
She dressed like this until around 2012. She doesn't dress as much in this style as she used to as she doesn't wear skirts any more but she still wears similar blouses
such elegance.......lovely, beginning to end.
I always loved the style of that era. They always looked very feminine & put together.
I always dreamed of getting married in a 1930s style suit at a town hall. It just looks so flattering!
My parents were married in a city hall in NJ in 1933. My mother told me that she had worn a brown suit.
@@miriambucholtz9315 that's amazing! I too am a NJ native.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. We lived in Westfield, Matawan, N. Arlington and Rutherford. We moved to CT just before I started second grade, but I always missed NJ.
My parents went down to South Carolina for a civil wedding soon after WWII. My mother wore a purple dress.
I'm 15 year old and i love this era some people don't understand why i like this era but it's the most classy era.
My Grandmother dressed like this even into the 1970s. She was so lovely and well dressed.
I remember my grandmother wearing clothes like this. Your glamorous model portrays these elegant styles very well.
1930s-40s are the best fashion wise. If war did not happen or my country nit under colony. I would have love to live in those times.
love the 30's and 40's everyone was so elegant and smart
Or at war.
Or being forced into a Concentration Camp where they ripped out your golden teeth, and stole your every belonging.
Not smart enough to not create the worst war, genocide, tragedy, sheer scope of destruction, refugee crisis, etc in the entirety of human history though.
Small,mishaps
@@sergeantbigmac Er... So that invalidates our appreciation of the aesthetic? Our era is over-populating and poisoning the planet to the extent where our own species is probably on its way out. Does that mean we can't enjoy Spike Lee's movies or Banksy's art ...
I'm getting major Tina Goldstein vibes.
Allavae Atherton she’s a little bit earlier, late 1920’s but tbh same!
Same here
So I was reading the first Nancy Drew book (Secret of the Old Clock) and in the book there were years of copyrights. The oldest one was 1930 so I actually came here to check out how Nancy would have worn stuff. 😅✌️
My grandma wore those “permanent waves” made with hair clips into the mid 1980s.
I would love to recreate the blouse it is really stunning ! can we find a copy of this pattern?
The blouse is Simplicity 1465, which has been reproduced from the original and is available on eBay under number 1452.
there are also original patterns often found on Etsy as well as the big 3 are coming back with retro classics as well as some pattern designers who are bringing back styles as well
@@calicocloth THANK!!!! YOU!!!;
Pauline Loven wow
Is this a simple pencil skirt?
I’m just trying to get references for my historical fiction novel, but the amount of misogynists in the comments is terrifying
Do 1940s please😍
while the 1780s stil holds the title for my favorite fashion period, this video makes the 1930s a close second!
I say let’s bring this back
Beautiful video! If I remember painted nails came into fashion in the '30s. The automotive industry had brought new fast drying paints and Hollywood actresses popularized the new nail varnishes.
Yes! And the trend was to paint just the moons of the fingernails and leave the rest natural.
painted nails were popular in the 20s... in the 30s half moon manicures were popular and my favorite, red nails with silver tips- made popular by princess de faucigny-lucigne
Nylon stockings would have been a great rarity in the 1930s, especially in the UK. Nylon was invented in 1935 and the first nylon stockings around 1939. with some commentators dating their general introduction to the early 1940s. Otherwise this is a genuinely interesting clip.
Ahhhh I want to live in this video!!
me too… as long as i don't then have to live through the great depression… or world war 2…
I’m depressed anyway🙃 I’ll be fine...
You’ll cringe at yourself when your adult. You’re basically making fun of depressed people and the ones who ACTUALLY lived in the 1930’s. You don’t want to live there, do your research. Also you’re not really depressed just faking since you do it just for attention. Otherwise you wouldn’t have commented ”omg i’m so depressed!!”
Jenifer Räikkönen I’m thirteen and my parents haven’t let me leave the house since I was six.... and all they do is fight and hit each other and last night my mum said she wished my dad was dead and hopes he crash’s the car...and she jokes about killing herself all the time.....
Z crew uk omgg it’s worse than I thought 😂😂 just stop. You’re clearly just seeking pity from internet. What about the children that ACTUALLY have abusive parents. I understand you’re 13, it’s nice to think you’re unique, not like other girls, but spoiler alert, you’re not any different from other people. Just stop lying and think about the people who actually have it hard. Your parents haven’t let you leave the house since you were six, what about school how did you learn to write or read huh? Busted from your own lie.
What an elegant and extraordinary video (as always)!! Though no elastic or silk garters in sight!!
Hi, are you going to make a video about men's clothes from the thirties?
regards
I doubt it, considering that it hasn't really changed much. A modern man in a suit and a 1930's man in a suit are dressed the same.
@@lady_sir_knight3713 I do believe that cuts for suits have changed over time. I'd be interested to see that.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. True, it's just that the layers are the same and the overall change is far less dramatic than in women's fashion.
@@lady_sir_knight3713 The trousers were cut straight with pleats and worn high with braces, the jackets were roomy but slimmer at the waist. The waistcoats were tight and they also wore colourful neckties and pocketsquares.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. My favorite era is the 40s.
Love 1930s fashion.
What a lovely video again and I love the outfit of this woman.. I love wearing my bias cut skirt with a blouse, bias cut is also back in fashion by the way I hope that will remain because it's so classic and beautiful.
I don't know why we women have somehow gotten away from wearing slips. It's a shame because they do so much for allowing clothes to lay properly. Not to mention, it makes moving in some fabrics and cuts much more comfortable. Dresses and skirts have become more trendy again, I wonder if slips will also make a comeback.
kateri17 in the 70's women started to skip wearing slips. All their dresses and skirts didn't drape well or were see through. Remember that photo of Princess Di when she first became engaged? Gasp! The scandal! She didn't wear a slip under her skirt and you could see through it! Then singers and models started wearing their underwear on display, and now they wear neither clothes nor underwear at times and call it red carpet fashion. 🤣😂😅
I finally bought a pattern for a full length slip so I can make it of silk without costing the earth. Bra and knickers/tap pants sets too. :)
Aww this video made me so happy, it makes me want to dress like this, all grace and elegance 😍
Beautiful! I wish we still dressed like that.
It’s pretty, but doesn’t look comfortable. And how is it on a really hot day?
Crow's Eye...
Use more commonly size women and plus size ladies in these videos! ALL the patterns used to make these historical outfits come in sizes from 2 - 24, and several up to a plus size of 26 - 28 (U.S. sizes)! Women of all shapes, sizes, and colors are beautiful and deserve to be seen!
She was normal sized...
@@natk4275 if u say so...
I was saying use more of average size women by today's standards.
@@natk4275 Women were generally smaller in size than today, too. :)
Beautiful and absolutely stunning.
My wife and eldest daughter collects and wears vintage dresses, shoes and stockings from the 30s to 60s. I love seeing stockings and garter on my wife 🥰
Squee!!! I'm longing to do some 30s sewing. This is lovely! My two favorite Singers are from 1936 and I would love to sew period pieces with them. 😍
Even the undergarment and petticoat looks elegant to me
And after centuries of consistency, stockings are no longer held up by a ribbon tied above/below the knee
Absolutely wonderful, as always!
Holy cow I love this whole outfit!!
I want that shirt and skirt so badly.
I love the vintage underwear. It give such clean lines to the outfit. Fab video! Xx
the clothes would seem to flatter most figures. Nothing flatters figures today.
Oh I wish women would dress this feminine and cassy today ❤️🍒
I believe the girdle would have been worn with the knickers over it for bathroom convenience. As she is demonstrating she would need to take off her girdle to get to her knickers in the toilet. I remember this fro wearing one as a teen in the early 60’s.
I dress like this every day and you're right, knickers go over the girdle, most of the time anyway.
It really depends on the type of knickers and some people preferred to wear them under because it was more hygienic.
But it is just a lot of hassle and in my experience and that of the women I spoke to most wore the knickers over.
It's just easier.
I always wore my knickers under. Because that would do a weird number with a garter belt if you had your panties over those long garters and with the girdle just pull the whole bit down at once. I do remember it being fashionable for a bit when I was in junior high to wear pantaloons over the whole mess. It was great when they invented those pantyhose!
Yes, where do you do your research to get those old patterns?
I have been reproducing period clothing for 40 years and have gathered resources over time. However, eBay and Etsy are good online resources for finding vintage patterns.
@@calicocloth Pauline , what is the name of the woman doing the narration in this piece ? Her voice is heavenly .
@@clementjohnson2666 Liv Free. She narrates and stars in several videos on this channel.
the best part of this video is the cat in the beginning.
She looks elegant and totally wearable. That is missing in a lot of "fashion" that I see when I see pictures of fashion shows. I wouldn't wear any of that stuff I see on catwalk models. Rarely does anyone design clothes for size 16 and age 50.
To be fair, fashion shows back then weren't all that different. They still featured tiny models and extravagant clothes. However, I agree with you on this outfit, it's gorgeous!
Links to the patterns please! 👏👏 Does anyone know the pattern numbers of the simplicity and Butterick patterns?
The suit is Butterick Retro 6330 (1936) and the blouse is Simplicity pattern 1465 which is reproduced from the original and available on eBay under the new number 1452.
Pauline Loven thank you so much!!! I’m definitely going to check for those patterns when I get around to sewing some more vintage stuff!
Ironically this look is considered sophisticated today, witch is true.
This is so CLASSIC & ELEGANT! Truly fall in love with this timeless style.
You just look like Alba from Las Chicas del Cable ! ❤️😱
Women took pride in themselves back then. For the most part it has blown through the window. Etiquette, manners, etc., also gone. I wish my bedroom was that neat.
I love it!!!
My favorite era 💕
Sorry im late! I just got back from holiday! Anyway, i love the 30/40 fashion so this is very interesting, i love it when you post videos, im taking history for GCSE and all this is veru useful😋 thx so much
With all the clothing this model is wearing the full-length slip is unnecessary.
Absolutely beautiful
Loved it! That era was my favourite
But what if the woman lived somewhere where it wasn't freezing during the day? They'd suffocate.
do you think you could do a 1930s one but for men? don't have to if you don't want to, but just suggesting
I'd love to know what brand the stockings are. They are so elegant and I want them!
1930s and 40s are my favorite for men and women's fashion. I try to buy clothes with these silhouettes in mind. The local thrift store always has slips and I can't stop myself! lol
I remember trying on my grandmother's pantygirdle and slips when I was a child and being so glad I wasn't going to have to wear it. All that elasticated stuff was so hot and non breathable. Give me some Reed boned linen stays any day!
Such a lovely and informative historical education.
Mi abuela usó el viso hasta que murió a los 92 años, era nacida en 1916.
What a lovely suit that is... If only women could dress that nicely and look so trim these days!! (I'd have to lose a few pounds to fit into that skirt!)
Katherine Spencer-Howard Ha! Me too, Katherine! Didn’t she look elegant though?
Precisely Ladies!! I personally agree with all of you! We can all bring these back again! Remember all! It all starts with ourselves!! Wearing and acting respectfully and elegantly is a necessity!! All the best to each and everyone of you! God's bless! 😊
That model is so attractive, especially at the end sequence with that hat!
My favorite decade by far!
Women were so elegant before, too bad we are getting further and further away from it...

Yes, but very few had enough money to buy fancy clothes like what was in the video. But yes, some did have enough money to buy fancy clothes.
I live in 30s hairstyles and I am SO HAPPY to watch this video
Modest, elegant, and beautiful!!! Love it
ok but the opening shot with the cat on the bed? love it.
Lol, this is kind of how I dress. I wear a slip for an under garment along with control top panties, but I prefer long cotton spandex socks in neutral tones. Also I like blouses, and I wear skirts most of the time. Along with a cardigan and my black colored flats. I find dressing like this most comfortable. I don't like most designs of modern waistband or waistlines. They're uncomfortable to me.
