  • Book Nerd or not, I bet you've heard about Amazon's newest eReader, the 10 inch Kindle Scribe! Is it an eReader that you can write on? Or is it a note taking device you can read in?
I promised in the unboxing and introduction video last week that I'd give it a try for one week, and if I didn't find a place for it in my reading life I'd package it up and ship it back to Amazon. So...is it staying or going? Watch the video to find out!

This the most accurate, and simply the correct way to review the Kindle Scribe as an e-reader first, and note-taking device second. Finally, a review that didn’t compare it to an iPad (apples and oranges!)

Different people have different note taking requirements. Some only need to have something to write on like a real paper. For those Kindle Scribe is amazing.
However, iPad's note taking functionalites are beyond just like a paper. Since kindle scribe is also an electronic device, it's reasonable people expect more than just paper.

I've been viewing nearly a hundred review videos on Kindle Scribe over the past few months, trying to make up my mind between the Scribe and the Oasis. Your video, however, concluded my extensive review process. Your video was refreshingly straightforward, easy to comprehend, and addressed the points I was curious about. It convinced me to immediately purchase the Scribe right after viewing it. Thank you so much for creating this video!!

As you said, the note taking is definitely secondary but I've already found it useful for multiple reasons - notes in books because I read a lot of manuals and non-fiction, I've used to notepad to journal so I can actually write with a pen instead of typing. I love mine. My hubs gave it to me for our anniversary. I'm perplexed at all the griping people are doing about how basic it is compared to Remarkable, Onyx, etc. But the basic quality is why I love it too. The more bells and whistles, the more things to break down. When I saw videos of Onyx Boox broken after a few months, suddenly I wasn't so enthused about it anymore. I've had mine about a week also, and I already have about a dozen folders and 50-60 notebooks. I love this thing!

I'm loving my Scribe and I'm glad for a positive review for what it is! It's not trying to be an iPad or other device. I also agree that too many choices on layouts and pen options can be over-kill and really not necessary. Again. I own another device that I use for drawing, creating and smart-selecting images from a browser. This is an e-reader and that is what I love about it.

The only sane, levelheaded, rational review of this device on RUclips. You fully understand that the point of this device was never to be all things to all people. It’s a premium, large-format Kindle with notetaking capabilities, and nothing more. It was never intended to replace an iPad, nor to serve as a comprehensive Android-based e-ink tablet. People blithely cavil about what this device cannot do, while forgetting that it was never designed to be a productivity workhorse. The Scribe serves its niche reasonably well, and provides decent value for the money. If Amazon chooses to add functionality over time, it would be a welcome bonus. But if they don’t, it’s preposterous to declare that such features are blatantly missing. I have no interest in maximizing my productivity. I just want to enjoy reading a few good books on the ultimate platform.

there are some valid criticisms over the writing limitations. You really should be able to do more than it provides given the devices hardware capabilities and writing feel. It doesn't need to be a productivity workhorse but from what I've seen some very basic writing management tools are missing. I'm getting it anyway and I'm hoping they update the software.
Don't you think it's reasonable to want to organize the notes you take? move them around? copy paste some writing? add a page to a different notebook? be able to put a folder inside another folder? These aren't big productivity asks. From what I've seen you can't even jump to a file in your notebook, you have to flip one by one. C'mon. They can do better for what is otherwise an incredible device.

I think the writing part of the Scribe would be great for a certain set of people, say people in school or someone like you that takes notes for your job or other organizations. I don’t have anything like that , so the note part would be pointless for me. I do think reading on that bigger screen would be nice. Some improvement I would love is the organization of categories. When you import a lot of files, moving them to categories on the device is not convenient. I would like to go to the uncategorised category and then be able to select several of them and put them in a category.
also when you have finish read a bulk of book in a category, it would be nice to be able to delete them easier in bulk.

I‘m also a huge fan of felt sleeves/pouches instead of heavy cases. Have been using them for all my Kindles over the years, as well as my iPads. Your dilemma regarding the sleeve vs the Scribe‘s multifunctional case is easy to solve by adding a Moko folding stand (get the larger size for proper stability) made of plastic, in either black or grey or pink. The things are tiny, fold in a flash, and can easily be tossed into a backpack along with, say, a Microsoft folding keyboard. :-) I use my Moko stands to prop up all my devices, i.e. iPhone, iPad, Kindle and now also Boox Nova Air 2. If it can hold an iPad, it sure can hold the Scribe. The cool thing is that you can choose from multiple viewing angles, as well as easily transition (manually) from portrait to landscape and back again. For me, such a stand that is universally usable and weighs next to nothing is a great compromise. Sure, you can‘t use it to write with a stylus at a slight angle, but who really wants/needs to do that? Normally, writing flat on the table is more ergonomic, or else you can simply slide your felt case under the rear edge of the device to elevate it - and cushion it - a bit. It‘s crazy to get a case that weighs close to the weight of the device, itself, even if that case adds functionality and lots of protection. And I agree with you a lot that using devices in their intended form factors is much nicer. :-) Wouldn‘t want to read on any device with the added weight of a clunky case.

Since that is not happening this year & all I hear is a rumor of an Oasis 4 in the first half of 2023, I became interested in the Scribe. I appreciate your user-centric take on this. As a user (and lover) of Kindles since the 1st generation (now with a Voyage), I often longed for a bigger screen, and was also in the market for a more paper-like stylus-driven notetaking experience than is possible on my iPad. When I saw this product‘s name - Scribe, as in „writer/writing“ - my heart kept with joy. That joy dissipated rapidly upon seeing all the review that show the unit‘s (current) castrated approach to notetaking, including sharing and folder organization. They should have just called it Kindle Read & Write or something, so as not to promise too much in the product‘s name. Or perhaps future firmware will expand the „scribe“ functionality? Anyhow, I‘m not buying until they do, since the large form factor, although wanted and welcome, is - as you confirmed - a bit too cumbersome and fatiguing (and public) for on-the-go reading, and the unit just doesn‘t deliver as a powerful notetaking tool. Instead, I just got a Boox Nova Air 2 so as to read on a slightly bigger screen than my Kindle Voyage, plus take notes in style. And it weighs about 100g less than the Scribe, so is good for toting around. In a separate comment, I‘ll add my 2 cents on the felt sleeves…

To be touted as the most premium reading experience than Amazon failed by not including page turn buttons. Page turn buttons are crucial to me. I have both the Scribe and Oasis and while I do appreciate the larger screen of the Scribe, the quality of contrast, clarity and lighting is nowhere near as good as in the Oasis. The text doesn’t pop out. I understand this is probably because of the extra layer on the screen to allow for writing, but I didn’t expect it to be such a significant difference. For me, notetaking isn’t as important as having the best reading experience with the bigger screen; but this is where the Scribe failed me because the quality of the screen just isn’t there. Also the margins are too narrow. This is a definite return because my issues are with the hardware, not necessarily the software. I’ll wait the the second edition which will probably take 3-4 years.
