Why doesn’t the one in War Thunder sound like this instead of a fart?

Very late reply, I know. But they just changed that. The sound that the Challengers had for some time (which was in fact the actual Chieftain sound, no idea why they didn't have that in the first place...) was moved to every tank that used the Leyland L60, and the Challengers received a beefier engine sound instead. Massive improvement for British MBTs I'd say.

Longest ever recorded journey without a pack change by a Chieftain.

they always used to sound like they were running past their rev limit - and a recovery vehicle was never far behind one.. I didnt go to tankies never regretted it beside the sound of DMS boots on the ground are much quieter!

They sound like that because they're 2 stroke

On exercise in Germany one went past our trench ( REME attached to 1WFR ) on the edge of a wood. We heard it coming for about 10 minutes and it sounded like a whole troop - turned out to be only one - if I had been the enemy that noise would have scare the sh*t out of me!

Often they were, it was very easy to adjust the governor without leaving traces, you just had to prise a tin cover out without breaking the lockwire and lead seal. You could get a bit more horsepower out of the engine and actually make it more reliable, to get the most out of an L60 you always rev the arse out of it, never bog it down or things will go wrong pretty fast and you'll end up with a pack lift and a meeting with the guys with the yellow handbags ( cases of Herforder Pilsner ) in the dead of night in some godforsaken part of Saltau. They were far more reliable from the mid 80's than most people think as long as you looked after them well, you had to do the maintenance, I only had 1 pack lift in three years before moving to Challenger 1 and I did a hell of a lot of miles in Chieftain.

Flying a red flag on a turret is a bit of a no no.
On a range it usually means the gun is unsafe and can fire at anytime.

Wasn’t in Tanks but drove one on Salisbury plane for over a mile without breaking down.. Every tankie I spoke to said the engine was ZIFF...

some of the older models of the cheiftan used a pretty crap engine, so when they upgraded it kept the reputation despite the fact it got a brand new engine that was much better.

The L60 opposed piston engine is a two stroke. They don't sound like regular diesel engines. That's why it sounds like it's over revving all the time.

    • @CS_Blitzen
      @CS_Blitzen 3 года назад +2

Not only is it a 2 stroke, so twice the number of combustion cycles hence it sounds like it's revving it's tits off as soon as it goes past idle, but the tanks that get thrashed and are running all the time are more reliable than a pampered chieftain from what I've heard. Give it to her and make her scream, let all of Bovi know who's in charge

@@CS_Blitzen I was a DR attached to a Squadron of The Royals around 1967 when the Chieftains first arrived in Detmold. The sound of a Squadron starting up in the pitch black at 2am on exercise in a German forest was enough to frighten anyone never mind the enemy. I remember the REME all had their fingers crossed when these tanks were going 'full chat'. lol

Unbelievable, it didn’t break down! NATOks requirement for multi-fuel MBTs caused compromises with it’s engine design and it proved to be it’s Achilles Heel, now all NATO tanks run on diesel as standard, mush easier to make reliable engines using Gas Turbines.
The Chieftain had a revolutionary boxer 12 oilstone on opposed cylinders (often described as 6 cylinders with 12 pistons) as British experiments with turbines led to the conclusion that this method would be more fuel and space efficient.
The engine used is tiny for what was considered adequate power output (in reality it wasn’t enough) which enabled hull storage for ammo, (where others stored rounds in the turret which consumes space requiring large turrets=more target area and increases vulnerability when hit by armour piercing rounds as witnessed by turret explosions in tanks designed that way) a more sloped and reduced size turret which was able to be much more heavily armoured. No composite armour in those days only cast steel.

just gonna add that it was a vertically opposed

Gas turbines are not without their problems though. They burn lots of fuel, much more than a diesel. General Dynamics have been working on a drop in diesel engine to replace the M1 Abrams Honeywell ATG-1500 gas turbine

@@rbagel55 they will probably put it in the new M1A3 Abrams

Read from a book. As we can see from the footage , once the horizontally opposed two stroke engine had been optimized for diesel , there was adequate power. And breakdowns , whereas they were a sever problem in the early years ( Ok , the first two decades ) had largely ameliorated towards the end of the Chieftains service life.

Depends on the crew.....and in its day it WAS the best in the world...( Even the Leopard 1, that was the nearest comparison.......) nothing could outshoot a well trained gunner / loader combo and IFCS.....trust me....I speak from experience....
