Look at what he accomplishes in three minutes and 22 seconds. He has brought his audience to the point of laughing while choking. But just as he is at the peak of this laughter, he begins to play the harp. And with very little exception, he does this completely seriously. The audience is totally mesmerized by the beauty of his playing. In three minutes and 22 seconds, Harpo has given you every single emotion from the laughter to tears. And that is exactly what comedy is. This scene always makes me cry.
As a child I suffered with asthma and not being able to breathe without a struggle was a battle back in the 60's and 70's. Thank the maker of Ventolin and all the Asthma drugs. However, to watch a Marxs Brother Film help me to forget about the pain when it was on TV. My was always Harpo and now I'm in my 60's, I have tears in my eyes watch this marvellous musician/comedian. I wish they Rest In Peace. Thank You.
Harpo loved children and even though he and his wife were not able to conceive they adopted 4 children and gave them a warm, loving home. The rapport he shows with the children in this scene is genuine and I’m sure that the children could feel it. God bless him always.
There will never again be seen the talents of the Marx Brothers... Chico's whimsical piano playing, Groucho's whit and by god Harpo is the greatest Harpist the world ever saw.
Music and talent in the spotlight nowadays isn't, and will never be, the same as from the golden era. There was a certain kind of mesmerizing magic that has died over the years, but we are fortunate to remember from these recordings. Those with finely attuned musical ears will attest to this. RIP Harpo, as a 27 year old in 2020, you stunned me with this performance as a young child and continue to this day. Listening to this recording is like being held by a soothing mother and gently petted on the head as you go to sleep. Bravo bravo bellissimo 👏
What's amazing is that Victor Borge was supposed to be a piano-playing clown--Harpo is much better. The part where he pretends to slam the piano key cover on his fingers is exquisite.
I’m reading “Harpo Speaks!” Just now and it’s so interesting/ironic to read that although Chico was taught how to play piano, he resented it while Harpo wanted to learn to play (he only learned by playing about with the keys and through Chico from time to time) and loved it - before he started playing the harp that is. Such a talented man 💗
IS MY MEMORY FAILING ME (IT OFTEN DOES NOW). BUT, IF I'M RECALLING CORRECTLY TO THE DELIGHT OF THE CHILDREN HE DEMOLISHED THE WOODEN ENCLOSURE OF THE PIANO TO GET TO THE INTERNAL APARATUS WHICH HE THEN PLAYED AS IF IT WERE A HARP. IF I'M CORRECT, THEN WHY WAS THIS HILARIOUS 'SHTICK'CUT OUT IN THIS POSTING? IF SIMILAR 'BUSINESS' OCCURRED IN SOME OTHER FILM (OR FILMS), THEN PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN WHICH ONES. BTW I GIVE 4 HONKS TO HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY (WAS IT GHOSTED?) "HARPO SPEAKS'
The film you're thinking of is "A Day at the Races (1937)" In the scene The Marx Brothers characters are hiding from the cops, so trying to keep his cover, Harpo plays the piano after Chico and Groucho make a break for it. The piano falls apart while Harpo is playing it but, as Harpo knows, the show must go on so he picks up the the middle (which is the only part left) and plays a beautiful song on his "improvised" harp".

Sometimes you get lucky and have one transcendent talent in a family. If you get really lucky, you have two. When you have three transcendent talents in the same family, that is magic. Bless you, Groucho, Harpo & Chico Marx🙏
At 1:23 Harpo looks to heaven, thanks God for the gift of music, his ability to play it and dedicates the next piece to him. The BEST moment in all the Marx Brothers movies. Genius.
What a talented family The Marx Brothers were, so unique, a one-off. Love all their films, A Night at The Opera is my favourite. Harpo playing the Harp is so magical There will never be such a talented family like The Marx Brothers
When Harpo died, he was cremated, and his ashes spread into a sand trap on his favorite golf course. The course is at 38-500 Bob Hope Drive Rancho Mirage, CA. The 7th hole, but I'm not sure what trap though
Right before this, Chico does his own bit of piano wizardry. Interesting though, in that section, the hand of the little girl at the side of the piano is all bandaged up. I've always wondered whether it might've got caught beneath the piano flap as Harpo was rehearsing/shooting a take of this. It would've then been shot AFTER this clip, despite this appearing after Chico's scene. Anyhoo... random info. Ha!
The forced laughter of the cued (aaaand action! laugh laugh laugh aaaaand cut ok more boisterous aaaaand laugh cut a little more enthusiastic spastic laughter aaaaand action! blablabla) kids spoils the genuine physical comedy... Oh play on , play on his music!

he was an angel. such a sweet, innocent, irreverent soul. I LOVE this man. whenever I am down, he makes me happy
Harpo 'plays' the piano and everyone is in hysterics. He then switches to harp and you can literally hear a pin drop.
This should be played whenever the world gets out of hand.
Which is constantly unfortunately
@@joeyoconnor3039 Which is almost always I have found.
Talent beyond compare. Sending children from hysterical hieghts to mezmerizing silence with brilliance! The clown king.
Junto con Buster Keaton, ambos ¡los reyes del clown!. Son superlativos, ¡lo más!. Amo a Harpo, desde mi más remota niñez...
A friend for life
The children were stage school actors playing parts. Their reactions were part of the act.
@@ushoys That's actually false. They were extras and their reactions were real. Look it up.

Music is the greatest cure for mental, as well as physical pain, I've always found,
That's a beautiful little story about the power of music. Wish you the best with your ailment
He was a musical genius and a gift to the world.
Excellent choice
This man was blessed 2 times ,once as a comedian, and once as a world class musician!!!!!!!

All of the Marx Bros had talent beyond what is present today. So magical then.

call me stupid but those comedians were real talents.
Can I agree with you and still call you stupid? 🤔
James Smith Yes, if you try hard enough
Alright then, you're stupid.
@2:18 the look on their faces when you capture their hearts in the moment of beautiful music
What a band of brothers they were, truly a gift to the world.
He's so great around kids and always made them laugh you can never ever hate a nice guy like Harpo 😋😍😄😊😆😄☺️❤️❤️
The kids on film with him were paid actors. Of course they laughed.
Always I cry when he looks to the sky and begins to play arp. ❤️
A heavenly instrument with heavenly sounds.
What a amazing person. Harpo was a comedian and a very musicality person. Two great things in to one that’s Harpo!
Absolutely exquisite his talent

I love how he looks at that sweet old lady when he's whistling.
Also, I think he was very cute!

Once in a lifetime, a special human being comes along and lifts our souls to pure joy. That was Harpo Marx
One of the hardest instrument to master and he was self taught. Genius Rip

AHA>>>> so harpo not only played a beautiful harp BUT a piano as well...he was a genius musician anyways .
even the "wrong notes" on the Piano.. sound better than 99% of todays "music"😁
so brilliant
Harpo absolute genius. Does anyone know what this piece of music is that Harpo is playing??
Harpo's variations on "Alone" music by Nacio Herb Brown, Lyrics by Arthur Freed. It was, or became, a very popular romantic song of the time.
Fantastic thank you Jamie
