I always begin with the outer layer. I adore beautiful coats! Here in Canada, with our wide range of ever changing weather, coat/jacket/blazer variety is a must!!!❤ Thanks for these great tips! I will pay more attention to the 3 colour rule.
When I get stuck for inspiration, I revisit my Pinterest boards. I have one on Princess Diana style (80s to 90s). She had great style and it still translates well to current times.
As I am stickler when it comes to footwear since they have to be as comfortable as any slipper (and require NO breaking in) I often when purchasing a garment think about what shoes would go with it. Also though I don't necessarily have my handbag and footwear always matching in color, I enjoy the hunt/challenge of finding something that does as when worn together I find it can elevate an outfit to the next level. With appreciation of your expertise!
Hello! I really enjoy your channel, with a degree in Fashion and 2 in Art, you often speak my language. To clarify Complementary Colors, they land ACROSS the color wheel from each other, hence the word “complete” instead of giving a compliment. It means that the two colors together, contain all three primary colors. For example- YELLOW & Violet (RED & BLUE). Analogous colors are next to each other on the color wheel.
Shoes have always been the hardest part for me when putting an outfit together. I’m excited to try your suggestion of starting there first. I love your channel and your inspiration😘
Living in a climate that has crazy weather changes I’m so rn you about checking the weather first to see what to plan. I love the idea of statement pieces and mixing in patterns or textures. Sometimes I’ll plan around a shoe, but most of the time it’s how I want to feel. Thanks for the video! 💜✨🩷
If you are following influencers, you are getting different points of view on styling. I think it’s a great, easy going approach to seeing my current wardrobe in new and fresh ways. I find it quite helpful and enjoyable to see things through different eyes. Keeps me from getting in a rut. Oh, I usually start with the bottom first
Start with the shoes is a great tip, especially if you live where extreme weather is part of the context. I'm in the Canadian Rockies so depending on weather I pick specific boots, and then I want the rest of the outfit to feel intentional to work with them. Also, collecting a few winter coats over the years has helped so that I feel like I've added that great 3rd or 4th piece to the outfit, rather than just hiding everything underneath.
I’m rolling out my accessories and colourful items, thanks for the reminder. Dopamine dressing in ridiculously trying times at present, in a rare couple of weeks where I couldn’t be bothered. If it’s clean, black, stretchy and air dried thoroughly as my tumble dryer is busted, on it goes. Could potentially be homeless in two weeks (I’m hoping not), so what accessories to keep…decisions…decisions?
Great ideas! I just have one question: what did you mean by the term complementary colors? In color theory, complementary colors don't sit next to each other on the color wheel - they're directly opposite. So, red and green are complementaries to each other, etc. Complementary colors are optically vivid; monochromatic and analogous colors are soothing. It wasn't quite clear to me whether you meant for us to choose colors that are similar to each other (analogous) or contrasting (complementary.)
Excellent video. The dramatic “high fashion” styled women really get the idea communicated. IM(humble)O I would love to see the ideas in a visual format of a day to day look too - but not a complaint here - just a thought 😊 I know these videos take a lot of with - so treading lightly with my thoughts and opinions ☮️
Great tips of three (colours or styling elements). Shoes are also important for how I dress; some shoes work better with pants/jeans, other with a skirt or a dress. Shoes musr also be shosen after weather and comfort. I also like some bright coloured shoes as a statement piece. Or in the winter I put on a bright pink barret or beene (dont know if I spelled them right?) The texture tips os also great, especially if you go for the monocrome look. Proportions makes such a different to me; I am average hight but quite curvy, so its easy to dress frumpy if not being careful about especially the skirtlenght! I cant wear any pleated skirts; it broadens my hips and make me look like an old aunt on some churchevent.. Also I cant tuck a shirt or a sweater in my jeans or pants; my upperbody just looks like a big round balloon. I rather wear my shirt open with a tighter top underneath, or a sweater with the exact (shorter) lenght for me.
I start with my pants, then choose the top & finally the shoes. I have a decent shoe collection, so I have flexibility. I have a very limited pants collection, though, as my weight tends to fluctuate a size due to medical issues. My pant choices are based on how I feel that day, so that's where I start. I own way too many tops. That's what I tend to buy the most of, as they fit me no matter what the day brings, where my pants...notsomuch.
Dear Ms Leonie, you are a fairy! ...beginning with the shoes! ....add an element of surprise! Superb Ms Leonie! Perrrrfect ideas...as Spring (here) arrives and that we love to change (everything? ah ah ah) by " shopping " in our closet! helene :)
Excellent video with tips i have not heard before. I am going to try the color texture shape tip. Plus the statement piece tip. Thanks. Jennifer from Canada ❤
I start with the outfit, than shoes. After its accessories, belt or jewelry a scarf. I do have it ready the night before, just the outfit, everything else it’s in the morning.
Thank you Leoni. Another one amazing video from you. So helpful and interesting tips in one video. Although what I still struggle with is the weight. What we see in many videos is young and thin girls and ladies, happy and relaxed. I will try to translate the tips in my case. 💕
I start top down, I think I have more shoes than clothes so I know I will always find a matching shoe however I can't say the same if I were to start with shoes.
You show some lovely images but they are nearly all young women that I cannot relate too, a twenty year old in an outfit looks amazing but I’m 62 and I’m trying to negotiate fashion appropriate for me and the images don’t help, sorry really don’t mean to give a negative feedback but some images of older women would give me confidence to style myself
I start with one major piece that I want to wear that day. Not sure where it comes from but I get a strong urge to wear a certain piece. Sometimes, it IS a pair of shoes that is that urge. Then I start thinking of pieces that would go with that.
My outfits begin with 1 piece I am dying to wear...a jacket, shoes, dress, etc then build the rest around that. Each day is different but focusing on shoes only might be fun for a bit.
I actually would find it fun. Lol. I believe that I am very stylish, however, someone picking out my clothes would be very exciting. Lol. Even if I don't love it, I would wear it just to see what kind of reaction I would get.
I use it as inspiration. I do the same with cooking. Watch a video or read a recipe, get an idea and make it your own! Or you can watch a fashion video and complain that someone gave you a clue…
I start with checking the weather forcast! Then I choose a top/jumper/knit/jacket/blouse and then bottom/pants/jeans/skirt. Also I could feel like wearing a dress then with layers under or over (to remove later). I finish of with the right handbag, jewlery and appropriate shoes! I drive to work so sometimes extra shoes so I can change when I get there! When I leave the house I pick the outer wear depending on temperature and weather! Raincoat (burgundy!) lined with teddy at the moment!🤨 Wolly hat/beany, gloves/ mittens is a must in Sweden in February! But sometimes sunglasses too!😎 Thank you , Leonie for your tips! Bye from 🇸🇪💨🌧
Loads of great tips here - thank you, Leonie! Another key element in MHO is undergarments. Never let one's bust point fall below the midpoint of shoulder and elbow. Each inch below that adds ten years and ten pounds. Those colours you are wearing look so great on you!
I'd like to see some picture examples with older women, rather than teenage models and twenty somethings. They are also fashionably tiny and I'd like to see your excellent commentary backed by illustrations for the older and not so tiny woman.
I would never start with the shoes! Sometimes I start with the blazer that I want to wear, other times I start with the jeans or trousers. I might have an outfit in mind, but often find that I need to change the blazer say to one that works better and try on a selection of shoes to see which ones work the best.
I start my outfits the same way as I design a room, I start with a pattern I love. It’s a lot easier to find solids that work with patterns than vice versa. Of course, I don’t wear a print in every outfit, sometimes just subtle, woven-in patterns/textures. I just keep in mind the footwear I’ll need for the day, I have enough selection to ensure that one pair will work well.
i have started with my shoes but usually based on the weather. other times it’s just i want to wear “that” today and build around it. and as much as i hate to say it if im having a blah or fat day i just go with it dressing for comfort. inspiration for me comes from within.
Actually that is often the case (“bottom up”) but not where my styling choice starts, it’s a default. And I see so many people on the streets who make this critical mistake (mostly students)…but there are four things where getting dressed MUST start. 1) What’s the weather forecast? 2) Where am I? 3) What am I doing? 4) Am I “hands free”? 5) WHATS THE WEATHER FORECAST???? Like it or not, my (casual) outside job (several km of walking) by default only leaves one styling choice when it’s raining & it’s gonna be HOODED raincoat, boots and (omg this was SO life changing…gone the days of those really awkward pull on overalls) FAUX leather pants! (+ layers). This must fit OVER the boot. So I had to play around with pant cuts/boot shapes etc & make sure I like how it looks because I have to be in it a looooooot! No more wellies over tights or skinnies that just get more soaked with every stride, runs down the legs & still come home with really uncomfortable smelly wet feet. At least this makes a rainy day job look styled rather than “I just threw on some rain gear…..” Rainy day “business/elevated” means dress or skirt is required for me so the outfit starts there, meaning that raincoat (aka “trench”) if it’s raining needs to be LONG. On “slept through my alarm” days I wear the coat as the dress (can’t come off) so I need to make sure I won’t get too hot or cold so the materials I sleep in are key. Here my “just in case” outfit is decided before I even go to sleep. But if I’ve got an event going on and running around the city (also in the rain) this is different. There I actually can go with the jeans, fun shoes, tops, pretty much anything I want because my hands aren’t busy so this outfit will include an UMBRELLA ☔️ There it is, the “default” so whatever I wear had better go with that umbrella. It sounds silly but, like are you gonna be folding that wet umbrella & throwing it in your Chanel bag or have it dribbling on your Balmain blazer (in one her words your “best dressed)? Yeah, it decides a lot 😅 I just save those things for a nice day. And on the other hand if I’ve got a meeting or gonna be on stage, sure I can style the long beautiful wool coats but they only go from the car to the door. What’s under must be dress or skirt so again by default my outfit choice must start there (dress/skirt), and not actually the statement coat which may or may not become part of the outfit. Gym/thrifting=athletic wear (yeah…I’ve seen weird things). Lots of driving/in/out of car=strEEEEEtch pants (dress/skirt/shorts)+something+something. Working indoors in 30,000 square feet of refrigeration=HOODIE (head, back of neck)+something+something. I could go on and on but you get the idea. I mean not everyone is juggling 3-4 jobs but that’s how I manage to make the whole getting dressed bit a no brainer. (1. What’s the weather forecast? 2. Where am I? 3. What am I doing? 4. Am I “hands free”?)
Some of these outfits used as examples. I would never wear. These are Young girls out in huge metropolitan cities. Models and social media creators. Some of your tips were good. It helps when putting together creative new outfits
Girlllllll... it's definitely 💯 time you talked about doing that side part ! You're about my age and most certainly NOT OLD.. so why purposely go out of the way to age yourself ? You're stunning, and I've seen people repeatedly mention this and you respond a couple weeks ago. Bobs are killing it this year and you're definitely one that could rock it 🤩
Thanks for the suggestion but I like my hair a little longer and mostly because it suits my lifestyle. I know it's more flattering if I have layers and more of a style but I don't enjoy the maintenance. At 57 I've tried every hair style imaginable and this is where I've landed for now lol x
@Thestyleinsider. I'm 54 and my hair is half Way down my back. I'm definitely not feeling very "on trend" so to speak and especially since it usually ends up in a messy bun on top of my head 🤦♀️ I'm definitely on the fence, but I'm finding it long is just as much maintenance as shorter or even shoulder length just not so heavy 😝
@@Thestyleinsider. I have a side-part bob myself (variations of it for 40+ years now), but *I love your long, straight, center-part hair on you!* It seems part of your signature style, which is quite ageless and modern. And, yes, you *are* “stunning.* ❤️
Can i get a round of applause for the beautiful setting for this video? I love the green and sun!! You look radiant!
Milan Street Style is one of my favorite channels... I key in on those classic looks that are just breathtaking...😍❤😊
Oh I must take a look at that channel thanks x
Same! Dusted off my fur items and my hats and I'm really wearing them. People looks so put together with accessories etc
I always begin with the outer layer. I adore beautiful coats! Here in Canada, with our wide range of ever changing weather, coat/jacket/blazer variety is a must!!!❤

Leonie - I've watched quite a few of these types of videos, and yours was among the very most helpful and insightful! Thank you!

I really enjoyed all your tips and advice you gave today!! I've already gotten some new ideas on restyling my clothes!! Thank you!!
I love hearing that Joy - yay!
I have always start from the bottom down, but I am going to give the start with the shoes ago😊
I'm living in Canada and as the weather could be extreme. I've always started making the daily outfit by my shoes, hating wet feet! 😊
Start with the shoes is a great tip, especially if you live where extreme weather is part of the context. Hi Loeoni, where did you get the khaki skirt? Love your videos. ❤
It's an oldie but a goodie from Zara. They have something quite similar in at the moment too.
so creative YET practical
Thank you Leoni. Another one amazing video from you. So helpful and interesting tips in one video. Although what I still struggle with is the weight. What we see in many videos is young and thin girls and ladies, happy and relaxed. I will try to translate the tips in my case. 💕

Σευχαριστουμε πολύ πολύ for being part of this amazing community!
I love the white shirt you’re wearing!! Where did you find that?
I start top down, I think I have more shoes than clothes so I know I will always find a matching shoe however I can't say the same if I were to start with shoes.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing x
When in doubt, go with a dress; it’s one and done
❤❤❤❤❤
Ehm... starting from the shoes, not for me (only two pairs for season)...
Complimentary colors are the opposite on the color wheel not the ones next to each other. Otherwise I love your tips
I’m a wardrobe stylist if any of you lovely ladies are interested. Also, I purchase shoes and choose my clothing from there.

👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🙏
OMG.. yourcomments , on having things available is a whole topic that needs attention as well as shoes .
Go direct to the topic you make too much advertising
This is how I support my family and as a single mom I’ll continue to work this way thx 🙏🏼
I start with one major piece that I want to wear that day. Not sure where it comes from but I get a strong urge to wear a certain piece. Sometimes, it IS a pair of shoes that is that urge. Then I start thinking of pieces that would go with that.

❤❤❤
I thought you might like to know that complementary colours are opposite colours such as red and green, yellow and purple, orange and blue, etc.
Yes sorry I was trying to speak in a way that was easily understood and not speaking colour theory as such - sorry for any confusion x
My outfits begin with 1 piece I am dying to wear...a jacket, shoes, dress, etc then build the rest around that. Each day is different but focusing on shoes only might be fun for a bit.
Letting someone else style me would take all the fun away.
I hear what you're saying but it can also be fun because they see your clothes so differently which can be refreshing. But def not every day lol x
Indeed
I actually would find it fun. Lol. I believe that I am very stylish, however, someone picking out my clothes would be very exciting. Lol. Even if I don't love it, I would wear it just to see what kind of reaction I would get.
I use it as inspiration. I do the same with cooking. Watch a video or read a recipe, get an idea and make it your own!
Or you can watch a fashion video and complain that someone gave you a clue…
I’ve always created outfits from the top down, but this week I’ll give it a go from the ground (shoes first) up.
Let me know how you get on x
But sometimes sunglasses too!😎
Thank you , Leonie for your tips!
Bye from 🇸🇪💨🌧
Starting with the weather forecast makes SO much sense. Thanks for sharing Annika x
I do the same! Weather knowledge leads outfit comfort
I start my outfits with INCREDIBLE jewelry 💎✨💎✨‼️ It takes me from Basic to Glamorous in 10 seconds! Best fashion hack EVER💫✨
Oh that is a great fashion hack - thanks for sharing x
I like wearing faded jeans with a sparkly purse
Nice!
Thanks for sharing!!
Great vid so interesting and informative also very helpful love totally ❤️❤️❤️💯💯😍😍😍👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

That's such a great way of doing it Kimberly x
I love how you include hijabi girls in your videos ❤ love the diversity ❤
😊 thank you
i have started with my shoes but usually based on the weather.
other times it’s just i want to wear “that” today and build around it. and as much as i hate to say it if im having a blah or fat day i just go with it dressing for comfort. inspiration for me comes from within.
At least this makes a rainy day job look styled rather than “I just threw on some rain gear…..”
Rainy day “business/elevated” means dress or skirt is required for me so the outfit starts there, meaning that raincoat (aka “trench”) if it’s raining needs to be LONG.
Complementary colors sit at the opposite (red vs green) and harmonious colors sit next to each other (green and yellow).
I usually start with bottoms: jeans, skirt or shorts. Then I go to the top. Last is shoes, bags and accessories.
very helpful
Glad you think so!
This was great, Leonie. Thank you so much!
Thanks Leonie for a great list! /Marie from Sweden
