In all honesty, a remake is better to me than a sequel. I'm tired of sequels so remakes are better imo (except for movies like Mulan, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan and Wendy). I don't want Moana 2 to end up like Wreck it Ralph 2. And Moana is getting an animated series, which will be the sequel to the original movie already.
Still, they should've waited at least until the 2030s to do this, but I guess Dwayne Johnson needs to make literal waves again after all the Black Adam drama.

Moana isn’t even that old or nostalgic. It was a pretty recent movie. So why in the world do we have to remake it?!? Can’t we at least have a sequel. I swear, animation Pilots and shows on RUclips that are funded through kickstarter are starting to become way better than whatever Disney is making nowadays.

I'm sure there are at least a handful of individuals that work there that have great ideas, but where those ideas go, I have no clue. They are certainly not in the finished movies Disney have been doling out.
I also won't disagree that most the cast and crew working on these films are lovely, I'm sure they are, but that doesn't mean Disney isn't abusing it's staff like OP mentioned. Many people are lovely and get abused at the workplace from higher-ups, not just in Disney. I'm not denigrating your experience, but based on their numerous stories that have come out through the years, you cannot deny that there is something suspect going on in Disney. Just google Disney mistreatment of employees to read the multitude of articles brought out because of Disney alone. They appear to be one of the most greedy and insidious companies in the West. I really liked what they did with paying tribute to the original films, while allowing the vocal talent to shine with the live music. Otherwise, why not just expand on the existing story with a sequel or spinoff? I don't think disney is out of ideas. It's that they're reliant on remaking things that will make bank.
So, rather than try and come up with new things it's safer for the company to do the remakes because it means less work for them concept wise in most cases and they don't have to make up a story and think about costumes and designs and that and they can think of it later.
They can also throw in excuses like they're updating certain fairy tales to the modern day sensibilities which... yes some kind of did need that especially the films that had racist stuff in there.
But the claims like the little mermaid remake is going to be better because Ariel isn't becoming a human for a man when I'm like... did we see the same original film? That's not the only reason she became a human.
And yet this shallow understanding is what they're 'improving on' to make Bailey's version better. Sure Bailey will do a fantastic job. But... disney is going to have a crappy remake regardless.
Overall, they're doing what's easiest not what's creative.

And if they want a movie that stars The Rock, they could delve into myths surrounding Maui to make an original film that's still connected to Moana's story. Hopefully, they'll explore the mythology and create something that isn't a lifeless shot-for-shot copy with godawful CGI, but it feels like Disney is really out of creativity at this point... If this announcement had been posted on April Fools, it probably wouldn’t have been taken seriously.

When I saw this news I couldn’t wait to see your reaction! 😊 My gut reaction was that they were doing this because they wanted to get The Rock before he ages out of the role, so your probably right that he purposed this.

For those who are wondering why, I am 98% sure Disney is doing this because they want their classic stories to relate to the youth of today. They don’t want princesses like Cinderella to become like Betty Boop, a forgotten (but once iconic) character, lost in the hands of time.
However, they fail to see is that they’re just digging a further grave for themselves by exhausting the stories themselves.

This could backfire… like, this could render the original “obsolete” and sort of dilute its legacy

How will Moana even work in live action???

Why didn’t they just do like a Maleficent type thing and make it a Maui origin story? That way The Rock could make it all about him. Clearly Maui had a cool origin as alluded to in Moana, that would have been actually interesting visually and original, and allowed them to play up the cultural aspect and everything. I feel like that is a massive missed opportunity.

Ik disney will never stop making remakes but I never in my entire life thought they would remake a movie that came not too long ago

Dwayne Johnson is like, “The hierarchy of power, at Disney, is about to change”
Also, The Rock always makes it about himself. He’s been out there doing this for a while.

Couldn't we just get a Moana 2 instead? I don't know what it could be about but atleast it could be much more interesting

    R.I.P disney
You gave us magic but then you did live action and that was pretty much the downfall

My faith in Disney at this point is non existent. Spiderverse and Super Mario Bros look really good. I'm so fucking glad GDT Pinocchio won an Oscar for best animated film.
