My grandma was an Italian immigrate from a very poor family of peasants. And so when she and my grandpa made money in France they bought lots of expensive things, awful baroque furnitures, ugly marble floor, an horrifying collection of French porcelain dolls. It was sad really, because they had this admiration for rich people, and they just wanted to buy things they associated with their idea if wealth. And my grandma's cabinet was packed with Chanel and Dior skincare and makeup, she wouldn't buy anything else, I think she was ashamed of her humble background and it was very important for her to look the part of someone wealthy (she had great skin though, a huge fan of sunscreen)

Thank you so much for sharing the story. I relate so hard! My grandparents were dirt poor and lost everything - they sailed across the Atlantic on a boat and were robbed AGAIN of the few pieces of clothing they had left. They grew up SO frugal that my dad never had new items and still to this day he hoards EVERYTHTING and won’t even turn on the heater or ac- then there’s me, Who grew up seeing that and ended up a bit like your grandma. Wanting to impress everyone because I didn’t feel good enough about myself and was ashamed at school to wear thrift store clothing (we lived in a good upper middle class neighborhood but with the mentality of my parents it was hard as I compared myself to everyone else)
Thankfully I grew up and found some self-esteem and came to my wits about what actually matters. And how far that money can go if it’s put in the right places, to make us happy and improve the world around us instead of just buying things that we don’t like to impress people we don’t care about.
It’s not the same for everyone, and some people genuinely enjoy these things. More power to them! But the amount of people, including myself that have purchased things just to make ourselves feel better superficially to other people that really don’t care is outstanding in a not so good way.
I’m really hoping that these sorts of conversations can help change that for other people so that we can focus on what actually makes us happy!!

@@CassandraBankson And thank you for sharing your experience as well, it's not something people often talk about, and I am so grateful that you were willing to make yourself vulnerable and share this with us (it means a lot, to know that someone as extraordinary, glamorous and successful as you could have a similar family history, I am moved to tears.)
You are right, coming from a humble background is really something that sticks with you (in fact studies have shown that even if a family does manage to escape poverty, it takes at least two generations to get rid of the label). Very often I felt uneasy and ashamed because my family tried very hard to navigate into higher social circles, always afraid to appear unworthy, uneducated, ridiculous.
Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the problem, because industries shouldn't be able to prey on people's insecurities and suffering to make money. And make them feel ashamed and inadequate because they don't have buy this or that. I am proud to say that channels such as yours made me an informed, educated consumer and skintellectual, and I am now very careful about such things, I won't let them ruin my self-worth or mental when it's supposed to be about self care.

I am deeply sorry that some of us don't hold ourselves to such an impeccable level of political correctness, and that my view of MY OWN culture was too offensive for you. So kind of you to point it out, the honor of French porcelain doll and baroque furniture is safe thanks to you,

I used to work in a laboratory at a factory that manufactured and bottled some La Prairie products, and one of the perks of the job was that we could take home leftovers samples. I fell in love with their Marine Cleanser (or whatever it was called 15+ years ago). It was slightly drying, but my then-super oily skin loved it, and I knew that never in a million years would I ever be able to afford it outright, so I hoarded as much of it as I could. It made my skin so soft and clear. It was the first fancy brand I ever used (I've used other mid-range brands, but nothing that expensive), but I'm curious how an educated/knowledgeable mind would view their products.

I have an old LV bag (from a now-deceased family member). I was using it and my boyfriend’s (materialistic) friend interrupted me to ask if my bag was real. It had nothing to do with the conversation (which was about the recording he and my boyfriend were about to do) and I admit I was offended. I don’t care if bags are fake or if they’re not designer (Some of my favorite bags were, like, $15), but the implication that he even needed to know how much my purse might’ve costed to properly judge my character was offensive to me. Sure, taking care of your skin is great. That said, when you're in your 20's, unless you have a particular skin condition, you don't need more than two or three very simple and inexpensive products to maintain your skin. The skincare community is just a community that focuses on caring for your skin; clear skin or not you still have to take care of it anyway and people who usually HAVE clear skin can be better ambassador’s than those who do not because it usually means that the products they've used before to clear up their skin have worked. And even if they didn’t have any acne before, the products they're using to maintain their skin, are in theory, working are they not? I just think that this is a petty argument that no one really cares for.

@@alexandria1672 I agree! I think people just always want to find an issue with everything and complain. I don’t see what the issue is. Naturally, if you see someone with clear skin you’re going to want to ask them what their skincare routine is or what specific products they use. It’s hard using someone with acne as the face of a skincare brand because how do you know the products are working for them? I definitely agree with everything you said!

Dear Cassandra, “Sauvage” in French means wild. And Eau Sauvage is the most mythical cologne for men created by the Dior house in 1966. Please, don’t discredit the smart things you say by making stupid comments like “it sounds like sewage”! You are a smart woman, but you have to educate yourself a bit about French fashion and beauty houses, and realize that beauty has a tradition in France that dates to well before the USA even existed. French dermatologists are way ahead of the American ones in terms of research and treatment (Tretinoic acid was prescribed to my mother in France in the 1970s and she was told to avoid the sun by her French dermatologist in 1965!). I am not at all in favor of buying “designer” beauty products if they are not worth it, and actually never have, but comments about a name or the fact that Dior is a luxury fashion house, or that “Chanel was a nazi - which she wasn’t, she just had an affair with one - have nothing to do with the quality, or lack of, of their beauty products. Stick to the ingredients and formulas, that is the most serious and professional approach!
P.S. If you want more info on French beauty, fads, the origin of some beauty treatments and/or products, I can help. My mom lived with severe acne until 35 and I still live with it. We were lucky to have a great derm but science findings progress and things are not simple. If you are interested in my story or want some info, pm me. No strings attached, nothing needed in return (I am a political scientist so not at all in your line of work 😅😂). 😘

@@Zeenunew304 She is young. Someone needs to broaden her horizons. It seems that a lot of what she knows about other countries or cultures comes from the Internet. And she’s of a generation with little “general culture” as it is called in France, which is very common in the US. Also has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about money. And cares too much about so-called “influencers”. She’s great at debunking beauty fads and fakes, but as she goes forward she should look beyond that world and just do what she does well, that is look at ingredients and science. And not only in the US.

EAU SAUVAGE is THE NUMBER ONE fragrance for men and every other fragrance comes 12th or 13th 😎

I bought a few just as hang-around-the-house shirts and to use as throwaways on a camping trip, and I fell in love. Under $10, comfortable, and so flattering for my figure. Sure, some clothing is worth the extra price if it's expertly made or is a fancy fabric, but basic items -- psssh, I'm sticking with Target. Maybe not the most ethical clothing, but not everyone can afford to buy sustainable, "eco-friendly," expensive clothes all the time.

Skincare for fun vs skincare for health... I'm active in my eating disorder right now. I hate living in my body, the way it looks and feels, finding clothes for it, moving in it. I used to love working out and yoga and being in touch with my body, and the experience of living in my body was just so easy. I hate moving now and I make food choices as an act of self-harm. So... What's the one thing I can do to take care of my body that doesn't remind me of something I hate about myself, at a time when taking a multivitamin is a reminder that I don't get adequate micronutrients from food anymore? Skincare. I can do that. And I can have fun formulating lotions and creams and toners and masks from scratch using ingredients from cosmetic ingredients suppliers - everything I put on my face (except sunscreen and chemical peels, which I don't have any business messing with). It's something to study and something to fill my time. My PIH fades weeks earlier as I learn how to work with new actives, and my blackheads are 3/4 gone thanks to anhydrous self-emulsifying cleansing balms. I'm dewy, never greasy. I love relaxing with a jelly mask scented with hydrosols in a bubble bath, a can of sparkling water, and a good episode of Ask a Mortician. Baths and showers are, weirdly enough, a time when I don't hate the sight of my own body. I enjoy making bubble bath from scratch too, something new to me. I guess the only "safe" part of my body is my skin.
