John Petrucci will always be my favorite guitarist. Always tasty ideas, no genre limitations, and just pure musicianship and humility. One of the most technically talented guitarists alive, and definitely one of the most creative and melodic.

I think people confuse time spent practicing with talent. He’s not talented, he just practices 40 hours a day.

One of the things I love about JP's playing is how he uses open strings and pedal tones. It's the same reason I love Ty Tabor, Alex Lifeson and EVH -- they all use open strings and suspended chords to sound rad. Of course the greatest chord in the whole wide world is the first one in Cygnus X-1 Book II (John loves it too).

Nobody ever really mentions that you can use open strings in lead playing in place of a fretted note almost as a tool to give your left hand more time to move to the next position in the riff. He also really didn't go into chords above the 12th fret that use open strings for octave divides which is something he uses.
