John Petrucci will always be my favorite guitarist. Always tasty ideas, no genre limitations, and just pure musicianship and humility. One of the most technically talented guitarists alive, and definitely one of the most creative and melodic.
Brian Craycroft dude "SHREDDING MONSTER OF COSMIC DOOM" the comment of the year on Utube Lmao! I almost pissed my pants when I read ur comment! yep never met him but seen him and Dream Theater play in the mid 90s on Long Island in Lido Beach after "Image and Words" album: FREAKING AWESOME!
he's been a beast since the 80s, he didnt grow the beard until recently. In fact he had no beard and short hair for a while and was still a monster. he's just the greatest.
I think romeo is the best neoclassical guitar player outthere, but I have to go with goose here, JP is probably the best, Im an okey guitar player and I cannot deal with his time signatures at all.
One of the things I love about JP's playing is how he uses open strings and pedal tones. It's the same reason I love Ty Tabor, Alex Lifeson and EVH -- they all use open strings and suspended chords to sound rad. Of course the greatest chord in the whole wide world is the first one in Cygnus X-1 Book II (John loves it too).
Really Excellent Explanation, and Playing. Thank You so much for this. You made it: Easy to Understand & Digest - the way you communicated this useful information. - Michael Caz - NYC -
John petrucci you are a amazing guitar player to me and I play guitar as well those riffs you play are the best and with the band dream theater is it still going strong as great player those speed tech necks are so good and with your maladys and that sweet sound is a powerful tool to play with those songs that is way you are my hero in the music world keep on rocking John and with the keys you do is amazing and with your hammer ons are magical to me to play with your band or on stage now that is power John petrucci so keep close to your family and friends and for the fans don't get this virus get you down okay Alex
Nobody ever really mentions that you can use open strings in lead playing in place of a fretted note almost as a tool to give your left hand more time to move to the next position in the riff. He also really didn't go into chords above the 12th fret that use open strings for octave divides which is something he uses.
The next time i get a new guitar, i'm gonna give it a try at the shop with the E minor scale and see if anyone recognizes where i got my inspiration from XD
Yep, every so often Alex really shines through in JP's playing. For instance, the first time I listened to The Best of Times, starting when JP's electric fades up just before the 3:00 mark, it was like a revelation: totally reminiscent of The Spirit of Radio. It was breathtaking!
"The Jesus Christ of guitar... the Messiah of music... The Batman of shred... I go by many names, but you may call me John." -Petrucci 18:3 Musical Bible

Agree 100 percent
I think people confuse time spent practicing with talent. He’s not talented, he just practices 40 hours a day.
I Like John As An Instructor, He will Do Some thing cool Thats Fresh On Guitar, And Stop To explain it with No Arrogance at All.... Amazing Guy
Couldn't agree more!
he is the coolest guy ever. I've watched a bunch of his videos, he's as chill as he is a shredding monster of cosmic doom
I completely agree! Rock discipline for example is by far one of the best guitar video lessons I have ever seen.
He is a pure master, of heart, from whom you can learn more than what he teaches you because he inspires you to continue studying
John has such a talent for "putting the cookies on the bottom shelf" for us little people without ever looking down on us.
*plays standard e minor scale with little to no bends or skips*
* sounds godly*
John is so killer of a player, and a HECK of a nice GUY to boot!
Couldn't agree more!
Yeah - he seems really humble & down to earth. Really tasty guitar player - too. Colorful technique's.
Love the tone of that JP-2C
He's a fairly talented teacher. Much appreciated.
Beautiful guitar, beautiful tone.
John is still one of my favorites!
Awesome player and teacher!
I'm telling you, his beard is what gives him these guitar powers
If that's true, the Duck Dynasty bros must really know how to shred.
Where do you think he hides his riffs?
he's been a beast since the 80s, he didnt grow the beard until recently. In fact he had no beard and short hair for a while and was still a monster. he's just the greatest.

Santa Claus with his beard
Open string techniques are so unique and gives playing some much deep intense sounds...it is worth to try and learn!!!!
it is hard to focus looking at that gorgeous majesty guitar...
Thankfully, he wasn't playing one of these gems: www.music-man.com/bfr/nomac
You misspelled “beard”
oh my god, a 20min john petrucci video! OH MY
GOD!
oh my *John Petrucci

Agreed about how cool a teacher he is! Satch is also like that. Great skill and patience. Grateful
Best example from DT: Metropolis pt.1 = 1:10 mark

That is a beautiful guitar
Yeah I cant stop staring at that guitar holy shit.
I HAVE to have it in my life. Amazing finish and obviously a capable instrument as well.
canman87 I want it as well, but it's pretty damn expensive
Fucking hate that hedstock
Is it available for lefties?
I love that guitar's color. Looks damn nice!
JP Rocks!! Taught him everything I didn’t learn.....
Next - John Petrucci joins ZZ Top!
Or Grateful Dead
I've started believing in God's existence when I've seen John Petrucci live
If you saw me play, you'd realize there is no god again.
Really Excellent Explanation, and Playing. Thank You so much for this. You made it: Easy to Understand & Digest - the way you communicated this useful information. - Michael Caz - NYC -
Esta clase es oro puro, luego de verlo todo es tan básico y lógico, pero John lo explica de tal manera q todo se ve fácil y entendible.
Instant subscribe for John Petrucci
His family go on tour with him IN the BEARD.
Legend has it........ there's a little tiny bird's nest inside of THE BEARD.
JP is great!
Ooooo that Divine axe... BTW that first scale is E Aeolian. G major over E... that is the nature of Modes:)
for sone reason i think music mans may be the best built guitars out thete
Man! That guitar is eye candy and sounds ridiculously sweet.
Great lesson jhon
What a nice guitar.
Great Lesson! Who is this guy, he should be in a band!
The guitar is so beautiful i didn’t pay attention to the lessons!
Really cool lesson

Ohh word Petrucci is Jesus. Makes sense now
I'm a drummer, so why am I her....Oh right, BECAUSE PETRUCCI
Tyler Bailey ?
Understandable that you got lost, since you're a drummer.
STICK MAKE NOISE!!!
nahhhhh drummers are awesome see ?
That's the same reason I keep watching every Mike Portnoy video on RUclips and I'm a guitar player. I guess we are opposites.
That's all good and stuff, but here's the real question - how many guitars does John have?
He has a few. Like as many as he has hair in his beard id presume.
Nice clean looking guitar, no shmutz
I die for that guitar😳😳😳😳🎸🎸🎸
When is he gonna be in the Viking series? Imaging John swinging his Maejesty Axe!
In the end:
"So the KEY OF ALL OF THIS IS TO STAY IN THE KEY!" hahahahah
Love his playing .. miss the old tone.
So helpful.
Killer tone!
I'm always open..to new ideas
This is premium rockstar acting as a regular guy 😉
JP is the BMW of guitar players

he sounds.better ascending the e minor scale than I do playing anything..
The next time i get a new guitar, i'm gonna give it a try at the shop with the E minor scale and see if anyone recognizes where i got my inspiration from XD
Anybody notices that at 3:50 it sounds like Doing Time from Avenged Sevenfold? Pretty sweet
4:47 Off topic , but isn't this the intro riff for Doing time by avenged sevenfold ??
He is a God but he makes it look so easy.😔🤘
awesome intro
I so want to play guitar now \m/
Great to hear
Wow!!!!!! Love jp
Way better than Zakk Wylde. Beard too.
kthcsh dude they are on different catagories
Zakk is all about fast as fuck shits and pinches but john is much more technical
And dont forget zakks playing is heavily inspired by pantera and black sabbath where in both cases you dont need technicality
Zakk is a legend, but yeah JP is unbeatable.
GooseGumlizzard That's what happens when your inspiration is God. Why do you think JP look like Jesus.
the guitar looks cool.
HELP. What song does he start playing @ 15:48 ?
this reminds me Alex Lifeson technique
Likely what it's based on, Rush was a heavy influence on Dream Theater in General.
Yep, every so often Alex really shines through in JP's playing. For instance, the first time I listened to The Best of Times, starting when JP's electric fades up just before the 3:00 mark, it was like a revelation: totally reminiscent of The Spirit of Radio. It was breathtaking!
Awesome!
cool glossy majesty
He does “the lick” at 0:00
back from Jumanji
Hahahaha
No, he is the viking.. LOL... haha
My influences guitarist..

-Cheers👍😀🍺🍻🍺
4:46 Doing time - a7x almost exact tabs
Máximo Fernández de Gamboa were you born in metropolis part 1?
?
Is that guitar available for lefties??
genius.
At 19:45 he turns into EVH?
"Now, if you can't do that, you're shit. You should just put your guitar down, and sell it on eBay and just quit."
but where is Jhon Petrucci in this video?
no tabs?please!
That beard is GLORIOUS
Dude, John, lookin' a bit bushy. I've got your autograph. Neener neener!
Whoa
what I learn was "the importance of scales in each string"
4:47 John Petrucci plays avenged sevenfold
I hate that I opened the video expecting JP opening strings as in string packs >
this is THE BEST. who are these fucking 11 thumbs down ppl srsly
16:00 ✍️😈🤘
3:28 i feel pain in my ears
He is very briliant guitarist but can he play smoke on the water ?
He’s a viking
He just started the video with "The Lick".
You know the one.
Slayer's got some good open string techniques too.
GoodKevin111 lol
There should be a counter of how many times he says simple.
his beard has a really nice beard
Now he's more like guitar Moses.
