With the speaker breakup, I don't know if the Mini would be loud enough for busking. So it's just a practice amp like the 40. Unless being unplugged is absolutely necessary; I don't know what the attraction is to the Mini over the 40 given the nominal price difference.

the attraction is that is small, rechargeable and very portable. I own both and the mini is the one I use the most. I use it in my office, garage, bedroom and living room. I guess the main point for me is I don't need the whole 40 w to practice at home

It's all down to Personal taste. Myself I like a bit more Bass with a warmer sound, so I think it's good that we can adjust to what we like. The Mini is optimal for Busking and to carry around to a Jam but for that I use the new Boss Cube Street II now. It has A built in looper and a Vocal Harmony and Two Separate speakers so the Vocals and Guitar are not coming out of one. Only 4 Kilos.

I don’t think the mini is loud enough to busk with. I agree that some will enjoy the darker tone of the Spark. My biggest question is why are there no presence controls on any of the amps? This makes me think that the speakers cannot handle these frequencies at all. In the PG Bias app the amps and EQ’s have these frequencies available. The Boss sounds interesting.

I'm glad someone else in the comments mentioned the gated hiss issue. It does annoy me. I have both amps and they both exhibit this problem. That aside, I have use for both amps. The 40 is used in my practise room at home and the mini is perfect for practising in my caravan. Horses for courses as usual.

I went to an open mic last night where the host was using the spark 40 with a side address microphone in front of the speaker. He seemed quite thrilled with it and all of it's features. Sounded OK to me. I was certainly surprised by his enthusiasm as I thought nothing was ever going to pull him away from the Fender Cyber amps that he has been using for many years.

I have the spark 40 and it sounds great with replacing the speaker and plugging the whole with foam. Also a clean boost in front of it really makes it sound better for cleaner tones. The EQ pedal they added also helps but doesnt fix all the cleaner tone issues. I have the spark go as well and that sounds fastastic when you want a quieter practice amp an arms length away. As for the mini, I got one three days ago and it sounds great but it has a gated hiss that suddenly cuts off that is really annoying and occurs regardless of guitar or pickups or the gate pedal. I’m sending it back for replacement but won’t keep it if it has the same issues. In any case I’m not using any of these for any gigs. I have plenty of amps and pedals but these are all great for practice and playing along with loops or learning songs. Would also like to add it’s best to EQ while playing along to track with bass and drums. Sometime when you think there isn’t enough bass you realize that’s the right tone to not get muddy with a full track.

I pre-ordered the Mini in Australia, when I got it, I was surprised that it didn’t have a decent headroom. I play mostly clean tones with guitars with humbuckers or hot single coils, then I opened a ticket and I was asked to reset the unit and play with a booster while keeping the guitar around 6 or 7. I downloaded the JC Clean preset that uses the clone instead a booster, I get nice volume and even though I lower the drive, increase the volume and get good results, of course without pushing it that much because the speaker will break. In latest firmware, the Hi-Z mode helps a lot but still you need to be careful with volume level. Not sure if I should get the 40, Black Friday deals are very tempting 😉

Thanks for this video, it helped me decide whether it’s worth buying one of these in addition to my Spark GO. The speaker is just about worthless, so I find myself always just using it with headphones, as an interface, or running it through speakers/a cab. Of course the advantage is I can just throw it in my case. It seems like the speakers on both the Mini and the Spark 40 wouldn’t be worth buying another device when I could just keep plugging the GO into something bigger and get similar/better tones. Great video!

Good overview. The thing I'd note is that no one should expect a tiny battery powered amp to sound great through its speakers. And definitely not at loud volume. If people are expecting something like the mini to fill a room and sound great, I don't think they have a grasp on what this amp is actually intended to do. Anything this size is best used with headphones or quiet because you can't use a real amp at that time. The main question that I have between the two amps is why I'd want to use the larger version in situations when I wouldn't just use a real amp? If you can play louder you can just use a better sounding amp with larger and better speakers that have much better bass response than the 40 version anyway so that isn't really the point of these things.

Spot on. The mini cannot handle clean tones at all. Needing to turn it down to barely audible volume defeats the purpose for me. It’s not that my expectations are out of line - with other presets, distorted thin compressed stuff, it sounds good, but that isn’t what I need. And as a BT speaker it handles the low end just fine. There’s something inadequate about the way it handles a clean tone. Totally agree that a slightly larger 20 or 30 watt with more adequate speakers and a battery would be a better solution. Too bad they screwed the mini up. And as to the bass level of the spark 40 - no idea what you’re talking about. It has a bass knob in it. People also use these for bass, so there needs to be some available low end. As a clean amp it’s great.

I think they fixed it eventually with a software update but I didn’t like the mini because the sound wasn’t good enough for me.

@@aaronshortmusic That's fair enough mate. I just want one to use for holidays in the cottage and in the car at lunchtimes, and will only really use it with headphones, so the sound will be the same as the 40. I use a Fender Mustang Micro at the moment, which is great, but I'd like the added functionality and wider range of tones that the Mini gives. I can see me maybe getting a 40 at some point, but I mainly use TH-U and Amplitube 5 (and a few Neural DSP plugins) at home, so an actual amp isn't much use to me. My gigging days are long gone.

I was the 1taught all thcompanies guitar amps should be STEREO WITH SURROUND SOUND.
    People are buying these amps....
How on earth or under heaven are no reviewers, buyers users noticing or mentioning 40 is in stereo, mini is mono.
Not too many people stroll over 2 thradio make darn sure there Hi Fi is in mono lol.
Guitar people are truelly baffling anamoly.

Or any kind of clean tone, pop music and funk often have squeaky clean tones.
