If you’ve ever been in love, and I mean really in love, just close your eyes and think of those moments while the music is playing. This is one of the finest und underrated melodies of the 20th century, in my opinion.

What I find most amazing about this song (writting by John) is the beautiful key change after the intro. Lennon was the first to admit that he was not a great musician but what an ear he had.

It is a gag. "His friends call him Hank. Ready Henry?" "Ready John." Probably written by comedy writers. Very Jack Benny-ish. I would rather he called him Hank. They should be friends.

@@frankburns8946 Yes, you are so right. John Lennon wrote the song. "Hank" looked through the Beatles' catalog, and chose this John Lennon song. Hence Paul's introduction. Henry is no friend of his. LOL! They were clever lads!
Don't take Paul too seriously, however. Paul was probably just joking around. I believe Paul when he says the song was John's but he contributed. For it to be such a beautiful love song without any sarcasm, and for it to be so sweet sounds a lot more like Paul than John. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Fell for more background :) Or maybe I am wrong to typecast John in that manner. I don't know. I do know, however, that I appreciate all the Beatles.
I am in my mid-60s, so I remember all this stuff because it happened during my formative years. It was roughly half a century ago that the Beatles broke up. I believe John Lennon said he wrote that song, and it was his first attempt at a ballad. Lennon & McCartney were like that. You could not keep score between the two by looking at the 45 rpm record's label and seeing who wrote it. It was all "Lennon-McCartney." According to a 1990 article in the Chicago Tribune, Lennon wrote 61 songs credited to ''Lennon-McCartney'' entirely by himself, and McCartney composed 43 on his own. All told, Lennon had a hand in composing 84.55 of the 209 songs recorded by the Beatles, and McCartney 73.65. George Harrison was a distant third, with 22.15 credits, and Ringo Starr fourth with 2.7.
But such statistics are like asking a computer to write a great song. Attempts by computers that I have heard so far may be "perfect music", but they sound mechanical, and thus eventually boring. Henry Mancini brings out feelings and emotions in his marvelous rendition. No numerical statistical approach can factor that in. In fact, one of my favorite Beatles songs of all time is "Here Comes the Sun" written by George Harrison. It is so positive and upbeat. The numerical approach above would make you think he was "not so good." For me, the Beatles hold a special place in my heart and I love all of them.

A tribute to Mancini as an arranger and player and also to the song writing of Lennon McCartney. Its really hard to imagine any other group getting this reception and the musical acknowledgement.

Certainly John wasn't a trained musician, he was an artistic genius ..... and YES i always wondered how John came up with those chromatic chords in the beginning of If I fell ...that was so clever and beautiful ...played by Mancini, who was a melody craftsman too, you see how the song would have been arranged if written by a studied musician with that sophisticated harmony....and guess what ....I like better the way John did it.
