#5: National Park (HGSS Version)
Release Notes.
In the era of the Gameboy Color, Go Ichinose's "National Park" broke new ground with its sheer ingenuity. A melody with the quality of an aria, little interwoven details that gave the track a beautiful intricacy, and a second section pumped with as much energy as the three-part limit could handle - overall, a masterpiece.
Come the 2nd Generation remakes, and Go Ichinose throws his entire arsenal of musical skills in this track - the HeartGold/Soulsilver (HGSS) version of National Park shines brilliantly through not just the HGSS soundtrack, but the whole Pokemon collection. It is, undoubtably, the most melodically intricate track in the collection, and its beauty is well-known not just among VGM arrangers, but among many Pokemon fans alike.

In the HGSS version, the track begins with a legendary cadenza, which in this sheet, was painstakingly transcribed to perfection by The Deku Trombonist. Deku nails so much more than the notes here, though - the key element of a cadenza is its freedom, and Deku's engraving has given performers all the freedom they need to make magic. So all the credits of this section go to Deku from NSM - there's a link to his stuff before and after these notes.
The main track opens with an operatic melody in the piano. Two string parts overlap this to form a sweet, delicate, yet complex accompaniment, and the result is the sweetest aria a piano could deliver. The aria moves on to a barcarolle (boat-song), with a falling melody and pulsating string accompaniment. Here, a Trainer is pictured taking a relaxing stroll around the Park, partner Pokemon by his side. They're taking their time, because they have all the time in the world to enjoy each other.
This opening section comes back again immediately after the first exposition, but in the second repeat, the Trainer and his partner have been lulled into a dreamy state. They prance about with no cares about the world, and the calm aura of the Park overwhelms them.
But during the dreamy stroll, the energy of life creeps in. The rhythm of the Trainer's steps moves to the beat, he holds his partner in his hands...and they dance. The uptempo, syncopated beat of the final section enters, filling the music with life. It's all a beautiful scene.
And so, the expansive writing of "National Park" finds itself telling a microcosmic, intimate, and warm story.

I spoke of this concept in my cover of "Lonely Lillie" - my arrangement of the HGSS "National Park" is the first sheet of it online, because for the arranger, this is one of the most technically demanding tracks (in my knowledge of VGM) to arrange. For the last four weeks I have arranged some of the most complex tracks in my vocabulary, and all of it builds up to this. Up until today's release, I have never applied so much analysis to a VGM track before.
But to say that this is the perfect arrangement would be outrageous, because there is definitely room for improvement. I just wish to set a precedent to all other arrangers willing to undertake the challenge of arranging "National Park" - do the analysis well, be patient, grow to love every tiny detail of this track. And it'll be worth it. :)
Oh, and if you do, you should probably drop Deku a message to use his cadenza; it's note-perfect, and it's the only version of it you'll ever need ;)

This truly is the 8th national treasure, the 8th world wonder, and the best cover of a song. I've never been so moved before. This cover bridges the gap (for me at least) between happy and solemn so well that it gives me chills and ecstasy. This is a very, very professional composition.

Seriously, after hearing this, I cried for like an hour just thinking about the good times I had in my childhood and how I'll never get them back... I regret so much that I sold all my Pokemon games in the past... (lol I'm such a crybaby) all I can say to those who still have their Pokemon games from their childhood, please do not give them away or sell them. Even if you don't play the games anymore, it was still part of your amazing childhood no matter how you look at it. :) Really, this piece made me feel for Pokemon so much... Thank you, Dajwxp :)

I'm really sorry to hear that you sold your Pokemon games - it's funny, though, that we humans get sentimental over pixels on a screen, housed in cartridges that will eventually die out. That's the cool thing about nostalgia though: it doesn't make any sense, yet it's powerful.

I'm going to learn this piece for sure. I remember when I played SS with my friend. We used to stay there at the national park and just listen to this epic song. The feels are real.
I'll take some time to learn it, since it's reading is not that easy plus there are no fingering (I'll make my own).

Day 1 of attempting it: Cadenza is easier than I thought, still have to get further, but those broken octaves could prove a little difficult to get right musically

Three staves don't mean you need three hands! ^^ You just use pedal to hold the long notes while jumping to the other staff. So in the opening section the right hand takes the top two staves and in the next one, the left hand takes the bottom two staves. It's marked on the score with "m.d." and "m.s." respectively ^^
Writing in three staves is a last-resort option that lets performers have an easier time reading parts that would have been too crossy/too densely packed for easy reading. It has a nice theatric effect too - hands crossing over in an organised way looks great on stage. So yeah, hope this all makes sense :)

Basically it's just written with 3 staves so it's easier to read instead of jumbling it all onto 2 staves

in the second half of the 9th measure, theres a triplet thing which starts from E flat and goes down in minor tierces, you forgot it :( but still everything is accurate and i love it !

I know which part you're talking about, and I did purposely leave that part out haha. ^^; Reason being that, in technical terms, the flourish has a particular melodic tendency that doesn't match the next bar - basically, the flourish won't connect to the next bar properly. ^^;
If you can find a way to connect it, I'd love to see/hear it! :)

I'm considering that, and I'll be trying quite hard to do that! ^^ but there's no way around that introduction cadenza, and there's very little way around that final rhythmic section...so it's not a very easy job. :p
There's a moderately challenging arrangement of the GSC National Park on NinSheetMusic now though, you might wanna check that out! ^^ Also, other RUclips channels have done National Park covers, and some of them even have live recordings of those.
So yeah, those are your options for now. Hope it works out ^^
